In a May 9, 2024 paper, Juri Opitz from the University of Zurich, along with Shira Wein and Nathan Schneider form Georgetown University, discussed the importance of linguistic expertise in natural language processing (NLP) in an era dominated by large language models (LLMs).
The authors explained that while machine translation (MT) previously relied heavily on linguists, the landscape has shifted. “Linguistics is no longer front and center in the way we build NLP systems,” they said. With the emergence of LLMs, which can generate fluent text without the need for specialized modules to handle grammar or semantic coherence, the need for linguistic expertise in NLP is being questioned.

“The People’s Auction”
The Museum’s auction is truly an event for everyone – it’s affordable, festive and full of
unique experiences to bid on. Imagine sailing on the Hudson River on a 32-foot sloop,
along with three of your friends, with a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty and
Manhattan. Fulfill a childhood dream of becoming a fireman: Bid on a chance to ride in
this year’s Memorial Day Parade seated on a Hoboken Fire Truck.
The auction offers you a chance to commission a local artist to paint a portrait of your
home or favorite Hoboken scene, or a professional children’s photographer to take a
unique, artistic portrait of your kids. Lovers of Italian pastries can bid on a chance to have
one of Giorgio’s master bakers come to your home and teach you how to make their
treats. And for a truly Hoboken experience, bid on a private tour of one of Hoboken’s
best-kept secrets, the Stevens Institute of Technology’s Davidson Laboratory, whose
wave tank and talented professors have pioneered racing yacht design for generations.
The Museum welcomes additional donations of antique furniture, collectibles, and, of
course, products and services from local businesses. The Great Hoboken Auction is a
major fundraising event of the year, and it helps support the Museum’s exhibits,
programs and publications. Because the HHM is a nonprofit organization, donations are
tax-deductible, call the Museum at 201-656-2240, ext. 6. Volunteers are also needed, no
experience necessary. For more information, email volunteer@hobokenmuseum.org.
About the Hoboken Historical Museum
Founded 1986, the Museum’s mission is to educate the public about Hoboken’s history,
diverse culture, architecture and historic landmarks. In 2001, the Museum moved into
one of the oldest buildings on the waterfront, in the former Bethlehem Steel shipyard, at
1301 Hudson St., Hoboken, where it maintains a series of rotating exhibits. The Museum
is open six days a week, 2 – 7 pm on Tues. – Thurs., 1 – 5 pm on Fridays, and noon – 5
pm on weekends. It offers special exhibits, tours, events and lectures, as well as
educational programs for adults and children on a weekly basis. An updated schedule of
events and an online catalog of many items in its collections are available at
www.hobokenmuseum.org. The Museum is a not-for-profit tax-exempt 501(c) entity.
Note to editors: Photographs from last year’s event and some of this year’s items are
available; please call 201-683-6935. Admission for journalists is complimentary.
