Physician Assistant
Introduction
 Physician Assistant is a job on the rise. With the
decline of the economy and the daunting years of
medical school, many students are turning to PA
school as an alternative to still join the medical field.
 PA’s hold many of the same responsibilities as
physicians and can work directly under the
supervision of a doctor.
 This job is appealing because of the patient contact
and treatment, without the years of med school,
student loans, and responsibilities that go along with
owning a practice.
History
 In 1965, the first PA program was established at
Duke University when the US was presented with a
shortage of physicians.
 Dr. Eugene Stead, chairman of the Department of
Medicine at Duke, created the two year program to
quickly educate students based on a fast-track
curriculum to train doctors after World War II, with
the influence of new undergraduate medical studies.
 The first PA’s were trained mainly for rural areas and
other medically undeserved populations under the
supervision of a physician.
History (continued)
 PA programs have grown exponentially since 1965,
with 141 accredited programs throughout the country
as of 2007.
 PA’s are now able to practice medicine under the
supervision of a physician in all 50 states.
Growth Potential and Salary
 There has been increase in demand for PA’s in the
medical field as physicians deal with the
overwhelming duties of running a practice.
 The Association of American Medical Colleges
(AAMC) projects there will be a shortage of approx.
125,000 doctors by 2025. Thus, the need for PA’s is
predicted to keep increasing.
