It seeks to close the gap between engineering and medicine by designing products and procedures that solve medical problems, such as artificial organs, prostheses, medical instrumentation, and health systems. Biomedical engineers work with doctors and scientists to develop and apply technology including designing equipment to analyze blood samples, creating artificial hearts and skin grafts, and developing prosthetic hips and devices to repair bones.
Student motivation
Dr. Jennifer Irwin discusses student motivation in education. She notes that motivation is a shared goal between teachers and students, not solely the responsibility of teachers. This document summarizes the results of a large-scale empirical study on the relationship between build systems and build maintenance activity. The study analyzed over 800,000 open source projects to compare how different build technologies (e.g. Make, Autotools, Maven) affect build churn, source code coupling, and authorship over time. The key findings are that framework-based build systems tend to have higher build churn, tighter source code coupling, and decreasing authorship as projects migrate to more advanced technologies.
RISC-V growth and successes in technology and industry - embedded world 2021
RISC-V International has more than 1,000 members across over 50 countries who are working in hardware, software, services, and various industries for a strong and healthy RISC-V ecosystem. It is projected that by 2025 there will be over 62 billion RISC-V CPU cores and the total market for RISC-V IP and software is expected to grow to over $1b by 2025.
In 2020 alone, we saw successes with newly defined RISC-V accelerator architectures, affordable RISC-V open source small-board computers, development boards for personal computers, and an incredibly fast 64-bit RISC-V Core as the community also ratified key specifications and made advances in security.
As we see the growth of RISC-V into industries such as AI, machine learning, blockchain, 5G, medical, and industrial, we will see the ratifications of new extensions that enable this growth.

Infrastructure as Code
This document discusses the importance of infrastructure as code (IaC) through a story of a company that struggled to deploy a new application. The company took 4 weeks and 2 days to deploy the application to production due to manually configuring environments. IaC advocates treating infrastructure like code that can be version controlled, tested, and deployed automatically. The document demonstrates deploying a load balancer and servers on DigitalOcean using Terraform as the IaC tool. Benefits of IaC include reuse, automation, version control, testing, documentation, and collaboration.

Fuck Your Narrative
Narratives are often used to manipulate others and are not always accurate representations of complex systems and knowledge. Books are becoming outdated and irrelevant as a learning tool due to their linear format and slow production process. New forms of media like decks and hypertext along with improved user interfaces are better suited for learning because they allow information to be presented in an easy and non-linear fashion without narratives that oversimplify complex topics.
Manufacturing the Future - MakerCon 2014
My talk from MakerCon 2014. The idea is how to look at manufacturing from a "base principles" approach. The idea is that if you want to see how manufacturing works in the future - you need to look at the physics and economics of the matter / energy / information that makes up products.

The presentation discussed how engineering disciplines could benefit from adopting aspects of software development practices. Pinkston also covered topics like making CAD programs function more like integrated development environments, challenges with democratizing technologies, and the potential of hybrid manufacturing approaches.

It is with great pleasure that we extend to you an invitation to the 5th Power Grid Model Meet-up, scheduled for 6th June 2024. This event will adopt a hybrid format, allowing participants to join us either through an online Mircosoft Teams session or in person at TU/e located at Den Dolech 2, Eindhoven, Netherlands. The meet-up will be hosted by Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), a research university specializing in engineering science & technology.
Power Grid Model
The global energy transition is placing new and unprecedented demands on Distribution System Operators (DSOs). Alongside upgrades to grid capacity, processes such as digitization, capacity optimization, and congestion management are becoming vital for delivering reliable services.
Power Grid Model is an open source project from Linux Foundation Energy and provides a calculation engine that is increasingly essential for DSOs. It offers a standards-based foundation enabling real-time power systems analysis, simulations of electrical power grids, and sophisticated what-if analysis. In addition, it enables in-depth studies and analysis of the electrical power grid’s behavior and performance. This comprehensive model incorporates essential factors such as power generation capacity, electrical losses, voltage levels, power flows, and system stability.
Power Grid Model is currently being applied in a wide variety of use cases, including grid planning, expansion, reliability, and congestion studies. It can also help in analyzing the impact of renewable energy integration, assessing the effects of disturbances or faults, and developing strategies for grid control and optimization.
