A group of German politicians who took control after the Kaiser abdicated in 1918 formed the new Republican government comprised of different socialist groups. They were blamed for Germany's problems including signing the armistice, accepting the harsh Treaty of Versailles terms, and "stabbing Germany in the back" by betraying the army.
