A far Cry from Africa by Derek Walcott

A far Cry from Africa by Derek Walcott
The three stanzas depict scenes from the Mau Mau Uprising in Kenya in the 1950s. The first stanza shows the landscape littered with corpses as the Kikuyu tribe feeds on the blood of the victims. The second criticizes those who justified colonial policies that polarized the population, leading to violence against both Africans and European settlers. The third notes that while animals kill for survival, humans extend violence for control and superiority over others through instruments of war like drums made from animal skins. The concluding stanzas reflect on the poet's internal conflict as someone of both African and European heritage torn between the two sides and unable to reconcile them or remain indifferent to the violence.
Derek Walcott
Derek Walcott is a Caribbean poet born in 1930 in St. Lucia. He emphasizes his divided roots between being of African descent but also British colonial influence. He founded theater groups in St. Lucia to promote Caribbean arts and culture. His poetry explores themes of binary oppositions between identities and cultures as he seeks a synthesis of his hybrid West Indian and British background. His poem "A Far Cry From Africa" reflects on the violence of colonial policies and his struggle with having a divided cultural identity.

Uncontrolled urbanization is caused by several push and pull factors that force people to migrate to larger cities. The push factors include lack of adequate land and jobs in rural areas. The pull factors include the perception that cities offer more job opportunities across different industries and better access to services like transportation, healthcare, and education. However, uncontrolled urbanization also leads to problems like unemployment, insufficient infrastructure and services, and negative environmental and demographic impacts on urban areas.

Poem Experience
In a literature class, students completed a four-step activity to write a poem using literary devices. The first step was choosing a photo, the second was writing nouns, adjectives, and verbs related to the photo, the third was choosing literary devices, and the fourth was writing a poem incorporating the words and devices. The student chose this activity because they were able to use their imagination to write a poem in a way they had not done before using rhyme. They learned creating poems with literary devices and rhyme can be challenging. While they were pleased with their poem, they felt it could have been extended with more stanzas, devices, and rhymes. They connected the challenge of the activity to the challenge
Picture poem

When we two parted

The student chose to summarize the story "The Lady in the Looking Glass" for a literature class activity. They drew a self-portrait that represented their inner self and selected a love phrase that embodied their feelings towards love. The phrase taught them the true meaning of love and they hope to improve their concentration and performance in school. They connected the phrase to real life by dedicating it to a girl they love and hope to date.

El boom latinoamericano expuso las realidades de Latinoamérica al mundo a través de obras como "El coronel no tiene quien le escriba" de Gabriel García Márquez. La novela muestra la inestabilidad política, pobreza económica, cultura de la muerte y el orgullo latinoamericano a través de la vida del Coronel. Art work conclusion
Diego Gravinese's 2008 oil painting "El Hurgador" inspired the artist to experiment with contrasting shapes and perspectives. The distribution of elements in Gravinese's piece and its creative perspective drew the artist in. A photograph of a ball in a field in Brazil also sparked ideas for color palette and subject matter. The artist aimed to use perspective similarly to Gravinese and first planned to paint but chose colored pencils instead to feel more comfortable. With hard work, the artist was able to achieve their goal of an artwork using perspective and was pleased with the final project.
