During the economic boom, cities were prosperous but after the Great Depression, poverty increased drastically. Unemployed people lived with relatives, in the streets, or in makeshift settlements known as "Hoovervilles", as seen in a photo of one in Seattle, Washington. Residents of Hoovervilles were unemployed migrants who constantly searched for work and relied on charity while living in poor conditions with inadequate shelter and malnutrition as they blamed Republican President Hoover for their situation.
