The Kushan Dynasty was a historic dynasty led by Emperor Kanishka I that controlled much of Afghanistan and parts of northern Indian subcontinent, as far as Saketa and Sarnath near Varanasi, where inscriptions dating to Kanishka have been found. Emperor Kanishka was a great patron of Buddhism who played an important role in establishing and spreading Buddhism in India, Central Asia, and China.
