Moving Forward at City Hall
By
Rowena Locklin
he November civic elections attracted more attention than usual; after
Tthe votes were counted, over 35% of eligible voters had cast ballots, a vast improvement over 2011’s 23 per cent. Perhaps that is because this
time voters perceived that there were real choices between candidates. And
although high profile candidate Ida Chong entered the mayoral race with a
long career in provincial politics with the governing Provincial Liberal party
behind her, the real race was between incumbent Mayor Dean Fortin and city
councillor Lisa Helps. In the end only 89 votes separated Fortin and Helps,
with other candidates falling far behind.
Lisa Helps is now the new mayor of Victoria and will be working with six
returning councillors: veterans Geoff Young, Charlayne Thornton-Joe, Pam
Madoff and Chris Coleman; returning councillors Ben Isitt and Marianne
Alto; and new councillors Jeremy Loveday and Margaret Lucas. Ben Isitt
received more votes than any other city counsellor in Victoria’s history,
helped by the overall high turnout, but clearly because he was a popular
candidate. We congratulate them all for putting themselves forward for
public service, a difficult job that, while supposedly being part-time, is a
demanding commitment.
The issues for our neighbourhood after the election remain the same:
equitable allocation of resources between neighbourhoods (in particular,
cycling and pedestrian infrastructure improvements); disappearing green
space; proactive planning for the impact of major new developments such as
the extended care facility on the former Blanshard Elementary field;
affordable housing; and funding for community centres and the Crystal pool.
For the first time, the incoming mayor and councillors will have a four-year
term to effect change and improvement to the city and its constituent
neighbourhoods. We’ll be watching closely, and reporting on, the benefits
and challenges that this presents to our neighbourhood of Hillside-Quadra.
Priceless’ Rising Star a Threat to
International Plastic Giant?
By Graham Dowler-Kingsley
espite a corporation spending billions of dollars on an advertising
Dcampaign to define what is priceless, it may not be enough to persuade citizens to think of a shiny plastic cash alternative before a
famous local chicken. As you’ve experienced first hand, or at least read in
our cover story, Priceless the chicken has the kind of poise, charisma and
acting chops that can be a real headache for managers of a 10 figure
advertising campaign. Priceless’ agent Alf Raider is well aware of the kind of
dynamics this can create for a rising star. “Like many of my clients with
unique and iconic names there’s the potential for a legal battle with one of
these big companies, or even worse the company may try to persuade my
client to sell out by lending their image to their brand. I only represent
serious actors and stars who care as much about art and ethics as money. I
don’t think they’ll ever get Priceless to sell out. I am worried about the legal
side of things though. They might try to force this amazing chicken to give
up his name.”
To give some background here, the so called plastic giant that must not be
named, started a famous advertising campaign a couple of years before
Priceless was born. While garnering some initial success, the advertising
campaign has seen its most success since Priceless was born 14 years ago. In
fact you will be sure to be bombarded about what’s really priceless
throughout the holiday season and beyond.
But fear not, Priceless will not back down! Raider thinks that his client
will be socializing and acting in all the usual venues for the foreseeable
future. “My gut tells me that Priceless wants to show that she won’t sell out
and that she and she certainly won’t back down or fly the coop on the legal
side.” Some say a name is sacred, and we in this community certainly hope
that a corporate giant will never be able to wrestle Priceless’ name away.
Could you imagine a star like Priceless having to choose a symbol for a
name? Maybe NO$$? (But probably something more artistic, and with
“formerly known as” in there somewhere.) Rumour has it that Priceless is
preparing a legal suit of her own and if she wins will give the money to
HUFFs and other local groups that support backyard chickens and food
sustainability. Only in Hillside-Quadra, you say? One chicken beating the
odds. It’s more heart warming than any manufactured heartfelt moments on
TV. … Priceless*!
*The Hillside-Quadra Community News does not necessarily share the views of
Mr.Dowler-Kingsley, Mr.Raider, Priceless the Chicken or anyone else that you
might think of when you read this article. Plastic giants may or may not exist and we
have no way of knowing the actual size of their advertising budgets, their approaches
to litigation or how they handle the game of chicken. This is a limited time article
and may disappear like messages in spy movies or at least after all 3000 copies of the
Hillside-Quadra News are distributed. This article has no cash value is not
considered currency or even current events. Read responsibly, especially the fine
print. You may need a magnifying glass. LOL!

We work together to nurture community well-being by providing services and programs to meet social, educational, health, employment, environmental and recreational needs of the people in our neighbourhood in a safe and welcoming environment. Moving Forward at City Hall By Rowena Locklin he November civic elections attracted more attention than usual; after Tthe votes were counted, over 35% of eligible voters had cast ballots, a vast improvement over 2011’s 23 per cent. Perhaps that is because this time voters perceived that there were real choices between candidates. And although high profile candidate Ida Chong entered the mayoral race with a long career in provincial politics with the governing Provincial Liberal party behind her, the real race was between incumbent Mayor Dean Fortin and city councillor Lisa Helps. In the end only 89 votes separated Fortin and Helps, with other candidates falling far behind. Lisa Helps is now the new mayor of Victoria and will be working with six returning councillors: veterans Geoff Young, Charlayne Thornton-Joe, Pam Madoff and Chris Coleman; returning councillors Ben Isitt and Marianne Alto; and new councillors Jeremy Loveday and Margaret Lucas. Ben Isitt received more votes than any other city counsellor in Victoria’s history, helped by the overall high turnout, but clearly because he was a popular candidate. We congratulate them all for putting themselves forward for public service, a difficult job that, while supposedly being part-time, is a demanding commitment. The issues for our neighbourhood after the election remain the same: equitable allocation of resources between neighbourhoods (in particular, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure improvements); disappearing green space; proactive planning for the impact of major new developments such as the extended care facility on the former Blanshard Elementary field; affordable housing; and funding for community centres and the Crystal pool. For the first time, the incoming mayor and councillors will have a four-year term to effect change and improvement to the city and its constituent neighbourhoods. We’ll be watching closely, and reporting on, the benefits and challenges that this presents to our neighbourhood of Hillside-Quadra. Priceless’ Rising Star a Threat to International Plastic Giant? By Graham Dowler-Kingsley espite a corporation spending billions of dollars on an advertising Dcampaign to define what is priceless, it may not be enough to persuade citizens to think of a shiny plastic cash alternative before a famous local chicken. As you’ve experienced first hand, or at least read in our cover story, Priceless the chicken has the kind of poise, charisma and acting chops that can be a real headache for managers of a 10 figure advertising campaign. Priceless’ agent Alf Raider is well aware of the kind of dynamics this can create for a rising star. “Like many of my clients with unique and iconic names there’s the potential for a legal battle with one of these big companies, or even worse the company may try to persuade my client to sell out by lending their image to their brand. I only represent serious actors and stars who care as much about art and ethics as money. I don’t think they’ll ever get Priceless to sell out. I am worried about the legal side of things though. They might try to force this amazing chicken to give up his name.” To give some background here, the so called plastic giant that must not be named, started a famous advertising campaign a couple of years before Priceless was born. While garnering some initial success, the advertising campaign has seen its most success since Priceless was born 14 years ago. In fact you will be sure to be bombarded about what’s really priceless throughout the holiday season and beyond. But fear not, Priceless will not back down! Raider thinks that his client will be socializing and acting in all the usual venues for the foreseeable future. “My gut tells me that Priceless wants to show that she won’t sell out and that she and she certainly won’t back down or fly the coop on the legal side.” Some say a name is sacred, and we in this community certainly hope that a corporate giant will never be able to wrestle Priceless’ name away. Could you imagine a star like Priceless having to choose a symbol for a name? Maybe NO$$? (But probably something more artistic, and with “formerly known as” in there somewhere.) Rumour has it that Priceless is preparing a legal suit of her own and if she wins will give the money to HUFFs and other local groups that support backyard chickens and food sustainability. Only in Hillside-Quadra, you say? One chicken beating the odds. It’s more heart warming than any manufactured heartfelt moments on TV. … Priceless*! *The Hillside-Quadra Community News does not necessarily share the views of Mr.Dowler-Kingsley, Mr.Raider, Priceless the Chicken or anyone else that you might think of when you read this article. Plastic giants may or may not exist and we have no way of knowing the actual size of their advertising budgets, their approaches to litigation or how they handle the game of chicken. This is a limited time article and may disappear like messages in spy movies or at least after all 3000 copies of the Hillside-Quadra News are distributed.
