parent workshop program for economically disadvantaged students, known as Title I parents,
that meshes scientific exploration and cultural exposures with academics to create a play-
based learning process to improve standardized test performance and proficiency. Served
13,456 parents, Advocate for 2 bills passed into law Jan 2010
Cyber School --- Piloted this cyber school in 2006 for high school dropouts/ adjudicated youth
in the Compuware, a 1.5 billion dollar software developer headquarters Served 130 people
Signature Event --- A family oriented hands-on iSTEAM (invention, Science, Technology,
Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) scavenger hunt and outreach held at the North American
International Auto Show January each year where families scurry from exhibit to exhibit
completing activities to score points to win cash prizes. Served 2987 people
OPEN IT SCHOOL--- Residents attend FREE anytime, anywhere IT certification classes on
any internet connected device with hands-on Instructor-led drop-in experiential learning labs at
multiple Detroit Public Library locations and corporate talent tours. Eventually, this Open IT
School concept will evolve into apprenticeships with paid stipends at employer job
sites. Served 757 in 2018 1st cohort to graduate April 2019 with CCENT

10. Upgrade Parent Career To Improve k-12 Scores
But due to the prosecution wanted to charge me with something, I have a misdemeanor charge even though the
firearm was registered to me..... This gave me a hard time with finding a job in my skill set for a
while..... Eventually I was given a chance again by the IT industry... But I was only able to obtain positions that I
was over qualified for...
Then came Ida!!! Keep in mind I didn't get many opportunities due to my record.... But the minute I started
the Cisco Learning Academy my knowledge increased and so did the amount of employers in my mailbox! When
I put Cisco on my resume, doors opened that have never opened before.
I was just given the opportunity for the first time in my career to be a Systems Administrator! (Damon got a
bump in pay from $24,000 a year to $40,000. When he completes our training his employer will increase pay to
$52,500.) Not only is it a move up in title, but also I'm now able to take care of myself and my kids
comfortably. I'm also looking forward to getting my record expunged! Thank you Ida!!!!!"
"Hello my name is Damon Taylor. I was born in raised in the city of Detroit most of my
life. Since middle school I’ve had a job. I graduated from Denby High School as well as
Golightly Career and Technical Center. I took Computer SMART (Systems Management
and Repair Technology) class at Golightly. After graduating high school, I’ve
maintained a career as a Computer Repair Technician for over 25 years. A
misdemeanor for a firearm charge curtailed my career in 2014. The judge wanted to
throw it out because he didn't see it reasonable to charge a teacher.
