 Maintaining Good Grades
 Joining the APA

 Thinking about College
 The “Real” Goal
Maintaining Good Grades I
 Do not miss class excessively or arrive tardy; do not skip
school, ever!!!!
 Students should always work on homework early and submit
it on-time.
 Review homework several times before submission.
 Do not submit work that is worthy of a grade of C, D, or F.
Always turn in your best work!
 When writing papers, consult the grading rubric to see what
is required to score well.
Maintaining Good Grades II
 Read course material thoroughly and take notes.
 Do not cram for tests; space out your study time.
 Always ask for help when subjects get hard.
 Go beyond assigned work by viewing outside resources to
understand the topics covered in class (free materials on
science, math, writing, history, & psychology available on
youtube, school library, quizlet, university sites, etc.)
Maintaining Good Grades III
 For math help, check out youtube. Math teachers
show students how to solve problems on that site.
 If you are still having math trouble, then try
purchasing a program like MyMathLab or MyStatLab
(for statistics only). They can be purchased with math
textbooks or as a stand alone access code. This
program can help you master your coursework with
consistent practice.
Joining the APA
 Why should High School students join the American
Psychological Association (APA)?
 The APA offers publications that discuss career options,
tips for time management, new research in psychology,
and how to succeed in your coursework.
 Students can also take advantage of the APA’s graduate
student blog (APAGS) to learn about advanced studies
that you may consider studying in the future. It is never
too early to read about opportunities in psychology.
Early Career Preparation
 While this site does provide info on careers, it is wise
to visit some of the links and do research on them
yourself. As you research careers in psychology, you
will become aware of how to prepare for that career
path.
 If you would like to get started on a career now, I
encourage you visit the main page on the site and read
the “free” Career Assessment post. Then, take the
career test (sponsored by the Dept of Labor).
Thinking About College
 I often hear students give many reasons why they cannot go to college,
but can you think of reasons why you should?
 College is a great opportunity that everyone should consider.
 Today, college is not that expensive, depending on what school you
choose. If finances are an obstacle, try applying for grants and
scholarship early on, but do not wait on money to apply for college.
 Majoring in Psychology gives students an opportunity to work with
people in their community. For instance, a School Counselor works
with youth to help them deal with life challenges, consider career
options, or a major transition (adjusting to the idea of moving away to
college or parents divorce and leaving town).
The “Real” Goal
 College is not just about proving that you are smart.
 College is a way to learn about other cultures, subjects
(psychology, business, engineering), vocational opportunities,
and how to work well with others.
 Attending a university helps students realize the diversity in the
world, while also reminding students that they have an
opportunity to make a difference in the world.
 For instance, having more diverse professionals with a degree in
forensic psychology (M.A. or PhD level) in the criminal justice
system may help to lessen the overwhelming wrongful
convictions and psychological diagnoses in the U.S.
