This document discusses challenges with STB-based media personalization for cable operators and proposes a network-based alternative. STB-based personalization is problematic due to the variety of legacy STBs in homes with limited capabilities, the high costs of more powerful STBs, insufficient infrastructure to support advanced features, bandwidth overload on the access network, and threats to retaining subscribers. A network-based approach could address these issues by performing media processing before content reaches STBs, allowing operators to reuse existing infrastructure for a unified experience across devices while lowering costs and retaining customers. The document outlines coding tools like object-based structures and scalable encoding that could enable such a network-based personalization solution.
