publisher’s note
I can’t believe fall is officially here. I have to admit, it is one of
my favorite times of the year. I love the cooler temps, pumpkins,
soups being made, Halloween costumes, and of course, football!
Even though summer has gone way too quickly for our liking,
the color of fall reminds us of how much the change in season is
needed. Perhaps a time to slow down and recharge our batteries.
My Bend uniform (yoga pants and flannel) are out and ready!
We are on our 7th issue of High Desert Living, hard to believe.
The highlight of what I do is meeting and connecting with each
and every one of you and sharing your stories. Thank you for
your continued support and thank you for taking the time to meet
with us to share and provide feedback on your only Tetherow
community publication.
As you know, we take a great deal of pride in choosing the right
businesses to partner with our community magazine. We have
personally met with the businesses you see in High Desert Living
to determine if they are the right fit and someone we would
FALL!
personally be excited to introduce to you. With that said, I would
like to personally thank all of our valued sponsors who partner
with us to make this magazine free each and every month to
Tetherow residents. It is my hope, that as you flip through your
neighborhood magazine, you take a moment to notice all the local
businesses that support you and consider giving them a chance to
earn your business.
Have a wonderful, healthy, and safe fall!

RACING TEAM!
Developing a Lifelong Stoke for Bikes
One day, while visiting the Ludemans’ home, I toured Allia and
Kaia’s rooms. While looking around, I couldn’t help but notice
their colorful trophies of different sizes on their shelves and
asked what they were from. “BMX racing,” they eagerly replied.
“We have a team called the BEND Brigade!” They then showed
me their black water bottles with their engraved BEND Brigade
silver logo shining bright. I was instantly ecstatic, wanted to
learn more, and share their story.
Allia and Kaia started BMX racing in August 2018 with the encour-
agement and support of their dad, Bob. “They are out there having
fun and learning sportsmanship, which is most important. Bob
raced BMX during the ‘80s, and then discovered mountain bikes
while up in college. His BMX skills transferred well to the moun-
tain bike and ultimately propelled him to an 11 year portion of his
career in the bike industry and a lifelong enthusiasm for cycling.
“Coming from that background and seeing what cycling did for me,
it turned into a lifelong sport, and I ride my bike now at a level that
I wouldn’t have achieved without BMX.”
During the pandemic, the BMX sport saw a huge surge of partici-
pation. Being outside, naturally physical distancing, wearing a full
face helmet and mask for protection, and community participation
are the perfect ingredients to feel safe and have fun. The Ludeman
family were thinking about starting a team and did just that at the
beginning of 2021. With seven novice and intermediate youth riders,
and Bob as manager and coach of the BEND Brigade BMX Racing
Team, they are out proudly racing and getting their team jerseys
dirty at the Big Sky Park, Bend BMX track. “BMX is very accessible.
It’s $8 to race. You need to have a bike, full face helmet, elbow and
knee pads, and a long-sleeve shirt and pants. There are loaner bikes
and gear at the track and most equipment you can find used too.”
The season in Central Oregon is from March-October, with races
at two separate tracks, four days a week. “It’s a very flexible sport.
You can opt in and out of races when you want. On Wednesday
evenings for example, you can participate and still be home in time
for dinner.” Trophies, medals, and/or track bucks are awarded to the
top three competitors in each class, with the lowest points given to
riders competing in three separate Moto’s. “It’s fun watching them
line up to redeem their track bucks and excitedly pick out a prize or a
piece of candy. An instant gratification from racing.”
BMX is an extremely effective tool at building character and
long-term skills. Cornering, bike handling, keeping momentum
over rough and uneven terrain, corner speed, and power trans-
fer all translate to mountain biking and various sports. It builds
self confidence, pride, and teaches competitive fundamentals
all of which are positive traits. “We are an amateur team, not
wanting to be overly serious top-level riders, but developing a
lifelong stoke for bikes.” Getting out, having fun as recreational
riders, and building a foundation for bigger things is the BEND
Brigade way.

FARM AND FOOD ALLIANCE
The High Desert Food and Farm Alliance’s mission
is to support a healthy and thriving food and farm
network through education, collaboration, and
inclusivity. We connect Central Oregonians to
locally grown, raised, and crafted foods through
education and outreach. Since 2010, HDFFA has
strived to mindfully adapt to the ever-changing
needs of our community. Our focus has transi-
tioned from land use and policies to the broader
food system, including increased access to and
education about healthy food. Our four main
programs are Agricultural Support, Grow and
Give (fresh food donation), VeggieRx (prescription
vegetables and fruits), and the annual Food and
Farm Directory.
We know the economic impact of local purchasing
goes far beyond each bundle of carrots that you
pick up; each time you choose local foods, you
make an investment in your local farms, ranches,
and food businesses.
Get Involved!
Shop the farmers markets: We are fortunate in Bend
to have local farmers markets on both Wednesdays
and Saturdays – that’s two opportunities to pick up
fresh vegetables, meats, fruits, and more!
Make it a date! Take your partner, family member,
or good friend out for a local food treat at one of the
many restaurants sourcing from and preparing local
foods. You can find out more about who is sourcing
locally on our Get A Taste phone app. Download it
in your app store or visit getataste.org.
Send a local gift: Purchase a Local Foods Gift Box
for a new neighbor or friend. We have multiple gift
options for purchase in our webstore that give you
a taste of what local crafters are making right here
in Central Oregon.
We believe that everyone deserves good food, and
that our food connects us. Join us in building a
strong and resilient food and farm community in
Central Oregon.

King Riney and the Barkow family (Jim, Holly, Jackson and Cole)
moved into the Tetherow community last July. Starting the 2020
school year online at Miller Elementary shortly after moving was
a little challenging for Jackson, but he had his most favorite pet
by his side. In Mr. McCabe’s third-grade class, Riney was part
of roll call in the morning and student activities throughout the
day. My daughter was also in Mr. McCabe’s third-grade class and
would talk about a cute bearded dragon that was always smiling.
After seeing him on Webex, I was eager to meet him and share
his sweet story to the High Desert Living community.
While only living in the Tetherow community for one year, Riney
has certainly lived the rockstar lifestyle. “Everyone asks how
we are doing, but they make sure to ask specifically how Riney
is,” Holly laughs. In fact, the Barkow family got a chuckle when
I reached out to them about featuring Riney as pet of the month
because everyone wants to meet him. “He’s such a ham! He
knows his name, puffs up his beard when he’s upset, and some-
times sleeps in very funny positions, i.e. vertical on his log. He
looks like he has a permanent grin on his face; how could you not
love him?!”
Riney was purchased at a pet store in Marin County just north
of San Francisco as a present for Jackson on his 8th birthday. At
2 and half years of age, Riney has taken a couple different road
trips, traveling through Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and California.
He likes to soak up the views and sit on the dash of the car for
short periods of time. The name “King Riney” just popped into
Jackson’s head, and he knew that was the name for him. If Riney
could talk for one day, Jackson would ask, “Do you miss your
bearded dragon family?” Topping the spoilometer scale of 1-10 at
an 11, it is certain that Riney is loved and adored in the Barkow
family. He is given his favorite treats often, crickets and meal-
worms. “It’s fun to watch him hunt and catch the crickets in his
favorite place to hang out, his terrarium.” With a life expectancy
of 15 years or longer, he is expected to double in size. “We are
already prepared to be the main caretakers when the boys go off
to college,” Holly says. “They recommend walking him on a leash,
and we are ready for it when the time comes!”
When asking the Barkow family what they love best about Riney,
they anxiously replied, “His appearance! He’s cute and loves
humans. Riney was intimidating at first because of his appear-
ance and the care he requires, for example, heating the terrarium
and eating live bugs. He has turned out to be the most gentle,
sweet and congenial pet. He is a charmer and eventually every-
one falls in love with him!”
After meeting Riney, I went home and told my husband, “We
need to get a bearded dragon!” With two cats, that might be a
challenge, but I instantly fell in love with his calm character and
sweetest personality. Thank you, Barkow family, for welcoming
us to your home and letting us meet King Riney and share his fun
story. He certainly is a one-of-a-kind pet! Even though we weren’t
able to bring a complimentary Dog Pack Collar, we hope he was
able to enjoy the crickets treat to the fullest.

high desert living pet tips
by Dr. Chad Moles | Blue Sky Veterinary Clinic
Halloween is all about having spooky fun and collecting loads of
candy. It’s also a great excuse for dressing up your pet and taking
them with the family for tricks and treats. But sometimes there
are more tricks than treats for pets what with people looking to
start trouble and celebratory items that can be toxic.
Here’s a look at five Halloween safety tips from veterinarians at
Blue Sky Clinic in Bend, Oregon, for your pets so everyone can
get their scare on in a safe and fun manner.
1.	KEEP PETS INSIDE FOR THEIR SAFETY.
Unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions on Halloween,
and pets sometimes become a target. Make sure your pets are
accounted for and kept inside on Halloween. Don’t let them out
unattended and never let them out of your sight when they’re
outdoors. You might want to keep pets inside for a day or two
after October 31st for additional safety.
2.	ISOLATE FLIGHTY AND HIGH-STRUNG
PETS IN A CLOSED ROOM.
Not all pets are suited to the comings and goings of trick-
or-treaters. They may be frightened by the sight of an un-
known person dressed up in a costume at their front door. And
other pets may try to take advantage of the constant opening
and closing of the front door to slip outside. Put your pets
inside a room and close the door instead of taking the risk that
your pet may have an adverse reaction to the comings and
goings at their front door.
3.	KEEP HALLOWEEN CANDY AND
GLOW STICKS AWAY FROM PETS.
Candies and glow sticks contain ingredients
that are toxic to animals. Some ingredients
cause a mild irritation in the mouth or di-
gestive system while others can cause organ
failure if ingested in large enough quantities.
Make sure to store all trick or treat bags out
of the reach of curious mouths.
WE LOVE WHAT WE DO
and we love your pets too!
“I love that Patrick shows up with a cleaning crew
of 3 or 4 people. They can get thru my house in an hour.
They are always on time and can squeeze me in last
minute if necessary. They practice Covid mask wearing.
They bring their own supplies and use natural
cleaning products. They are always happy and asking
for feedback so they can improve their services.
I highly recommend them!!”
(541) 280-8736
muddypawscleaners@gmail.com
SPECIALIZING IN RESIDENTIAL HOUSEKEEPING
AND COMMERCIAL CLEANING SERVICES
When it comes to glow sticks, dogs view them as they would a
bone and gnaw on them. If a dog breaks open a glow stick, the
ingredients contain a liquid known as dibutyl phthalate. The
ingredient is viewed as an irritant rather than a toxin, but it
can irritate the lining of a dog’s mouth.
If your pet ingests something they shouldn’t have, call your vet-
erinarian in Bend to get immediate care. The sooner you take
action, the better for your pet.
4.	PUT JACK-O’-LANTERNS AND CANDLES
IN A STABLE AND SAFE LOCATION.
If you’re using candles to light up your carved pumpkins, make
sure that you place them in a spot where pets can’t easily
knock them over. The same goes for lighting candles to set a
spooky mood. You don’t want a pet jumping up next to either of
these objects and burning themselves or starting a fire.
5.	MAKE SURE YOUR PETS ARE COMFORTABLE
WEARING A COSTUME.
It’s fun to dress up your pets, but your pets might not feel the
same way. Put each piece of a costume onto your pet first to
make sure they’ll tolerate the sensation of the item on their
body and that they don’t overheat. If your pet is comfortable
wearing a sweater or a coat, try to find a costume with the
same style to make wearing a costume easier on your pet.

FOR RAISING KIDS
Money Smarts
tetherow financial fitness Provided by Joseph Mansfield
Regardless of how much money a fam-
ily may have, parents have a respon-
sibility to teach their children about
finances. Starting early, children need
to learn about how to be financially
responsible once they leave the house
and become independent.
Here are three steps parents can take
starting today:

1.	Find teachable moments.
It can be difficult to find time to sit
down and talk specifically about
money, but natural opportunities to
teach pop up practically every day.
	 For example, you can incorporate
financial responsibility into an im-
promptu math lesson about money:
If you find something the child
wants that originally cost $100 and
is on sale for 30% off, you can ask
how much the new price is – and
now that they are only spending
$70, what they might do with the
leftover $30.

2.	Take a lifelong view toward
financial literacy.
Every child should have a toolkit
of basic financial literacy skills
by age 18, including concepts
such as how to spend, how to
save, how to give, and the
value of a dollar.
	 This can start very early
with an exercise as
simple as a three piggy
banks analogy. You
encourage the child to
divide any money he or
she receives into three piggy banks:
spending, saving, and community/
charity. This shows the concept of
different purposes of money rather
than having it all be for spending. Re-
peating this exercise can help ingrain
the habit of saving regularly.
	 By late childhood or adolescence,
parents can add concepts such as
what it means to invest, what com-
panies one might invest in, and how
to assess risk with an investment.
	 You can encourage children in
high school to think about college
expenses by examining the costs and
coming up with a credible college
budget. Ask them to consider basic
questions: What will you need in or-
der to make this happen? What will
the family need to supply, and what
is the student expected to supply in
terms of tuition, books, room and
board, transportation, and normal
spending money?
And parents and grandparents can continue to en-
courage responsible, long-term financial responsi-
bility by giving young adults an incentive to begin
saving for retirement early. If you’re able, and they
have earned income, offer to match what they save
into a Roth IRA. It’s also wise to encourage contri-
butions to a 401(k) at work.

3.	Show how it’s done.
Your child’s healthy relationship with money be-
gins with an open and honest relationship within
a family that models good money behavior. These
discussions can be challenging, but the fruit is
well worth the labor.
Stress education and expect them to do well in
school. Parents who do really well in teaching
financial literacy typically lead by example –
they tend to be savers and are more careful with
spending money. Remember to be that example.

THE SULLIVAN FAMILY
Story content by the Sullivan family | photos by: Em’s Lens Photography
David and Casey Sullivan, their 2-year-old son, Knox, 4-month-
old daughter, Ireland, and two cats, Isla and Charlie, have lived
in the Tetherow community since 2020. “We love the landscape
and location. It’s close to the mountain and lakes and has so many
trails out your backdoor!”
You will often see the Sullivan family on the nearby trails, moun-
tain biking and trail running. “Knox has a special seat on Dad’s
bike and will sit in front of the bike seat and put his hands on the
handlebars too. He loves it!” They also love to be near any body
of water, snowboarding, and wakeboarding. Naturally, Casey
gravitates to the outdoor sports and lifestyle as she has a bache-
lor’s degree from OSU – Cascades in exercise and sports science.
“Growing up in Missoula, Montana, I moved to Bend in 2007 for
the similar outdoor recreation.” David also grew up in a similar
town, Spokane, Washington, and moved to Bend in 2010 after
completing his Orthodontic residency in Ohio at Case Western
Reserve University.
David and Casey have been together since 2013 and married in
2016. “We met years prior to 2013 but were both in relationships.
In 2013, we ran into each other and happened to both be single.
David said, “I’m not playing any games, I’m calling her now.” And
the rest is history!
Knox was welcomed into the family in February 2019, just one
day apart from Casey’s birthday. He loves riding his bike, any
construction vehicles that he calls “scoops,” baseball, basketball,
puzzles and books. “He’s the sweetest big brother and is always
giving hugs and kisses to his sister. The first thing he does when
waking up is go see his sister and give her a kiss. Knox listens
well and is the gentlest, even though he’s ALL boy.” He also loves
hanging out with Dad in the morning on their patio by the fire pit
as Dad sips his coffee and Knox drinks his milk. “It’s our boy time
in the morning as the girls are getting up,” David lovingly admits.
David started his practice, Sullivan Orthodontics, in 2010 with
offices in both Bend and Redmond. He has built an amazing fam-
ily-friendly reputation in the Central Oregon community that is
keeping him very busy. He has an extensive education, receiving
a Bachelor of Science from Villanova University, a Doctorate of
Dental Surgery from University of Southern California School of
Dentistry and a Master of Science from Case Western Reserve
University. It is clear he is passionate about helping patients
create beautiful smiles.
Baby Ireland, named after Casey’s maiden name, was born in
April 2021, sharing a very special birthday with Casey’s grandma.
At 4 months old she is very busy rolling over and exploring the
world. “Ireland is a content, happy, and an easy baby. She’s
always smiling at her big brother.”
As David and Casey look into the nearer future they are excited
to once again travel and explore different cultures with Knox
and Ireland. “We can’t wait to take them snowboarding when
they get a little older too!” In the meantime, they love exploring
around Bend and the high desert. “We love being outside as much
as we can.” Jackson’s Corner, El Sauncho, Wild Rose and The
Washington are some of their favorite places to eat. Even though
date nights are rarer these days with two young ones, they love
going to Bos Taurus for special occasions.
When asking the question, “What do you love about Tetherow?”
Casey unhesitatingly replied, “We truly have the best neighbors
ever. We will not move because of our neighbors and the rela-
tionships we have built in the Tetherow community. They are like
family to us!”
You couldn’t have asked for a better answer.
Thank you, Casey, David, Knox, and Ireland, for sharing your
story with the Tetherow community. It’s stories like these that hit
home as to why the Tetherow community is so unique and special.
It’s safe to say the Sullivan family won’t be moving anytime soon
as they continue to put down roots in Tetherow. Be sure to say hi
the next time you see the Sullivans around the neighborhood; you
will be so glad you did.

A N D T H E N S O M E
Did you know that the most common chronic disease in children
aged 6 to 11 and adolescents aged 12 to 19 is entirely preventable?
And adults can get it too. Nine out of 10 adults over the age of 20
have it.
So what is it?
Well, it’s tooth decay.
And there is no better time to share some tooth-shattering
facts and helpful tips than during the month when the kids are
gobbling up as much candy as we can. And we are talking to the
adults out there too. We know you are sneaking candy out of
your kid’s stash while feigning innocence. Come on, Halloween
just wouldn’t be the same without candy. And we don’t want to
spoil your fun. Rather, we want to provide some options so that
the joy of eating sweets doesn’t turn into a bigger problem down
the road.
The Anatomy of a Tooth
First, let’s start with a bit of anatomy to understand better how
a cavity forms. The outer portion of the tooth is made of enamel,
which provides protection. Below this is the dentin, which is not
as hard as enamel and is, therefore, more susceptible to cavities.
The pulp is located below the dentin, which houses the nerves
and blood supply that keeps the tooth alive.
The Mystery of a Cavity
Have you ever wondered why some people get cavities despite
meticulous oral hygiene while others who rarely brush don’t?
Well, some people are prone to cavities.
The three leading causes of tooth decay are saliva issues (pH
levels), frequent snacking, and poor oral hygiene. And let’s face
it, you have bacteria in your mouth – we all do. The bacteria feed
on the foods you eat. When eaten, sugary foods and drinks are
transformed into acid by bacteria. The acid remains on the tooth,
where it slowly wears down the enamel, resulting in a cavity.
When the cavity isn’t fixed early on, it can travel from the enamel
to the dentin and eventually to the pulp, where it can lead to an
infection that can be life-threatening.
How to Prevent Cavities
The whole point of this article is to help you PREVENT cavities.
And, thankfully, we live in a time where we have multiple options
for achieving this. First, brush your teeth for two minutes twice
a day. Second, floss every day. Yes, we know it takes time, but
trapped food can decompose between your teeth, and we are
sure you don’t want to host a little party for your mouth bacteria.
Third, fluoride treatments do help prevent cavities. And fourth,
consider dental sealants to protect teeth from bacteria that can
get trapped in the grooves of your teeth (molars).
Another great option to consider is a treatment Dr. Mike Longlet
swears by and uses himself EVERY DAY: CariFree.
CariFree is a tooth decay prevention system that is clinically
proven to work. And it doesn’t just help prevent cavities. You see,
brushing and flossing are just one of the three primary causes of
tooth decay.
Good oral hygiene does not address the pH levels in your mouth.
Remember we mentioned saliva issues as a cause of tooth decay?
Well, without going too scientific on you, the pH levels inside the
mouth can lead to cavities. Too low of a pH can lead to deminer-
alization and, eventually, tooth decay. The root cause of cavities
is a low pH. CariFree neutralizes the pH levels in your mouth and
can rebuild tooth enamel (called remineralization).
So, now you know the anatomy of a tooth. You also know the
three leading causes of tooth decay and how to prevent it. So,
enjoy your Halloween splurge(s). Just be sure to follow your treat
with one or all of the tricks provided in this article.
Straight Teeth
Last Longer.
Straight teeth provide much
more than cosmetic benefits.
There are medical benefits
as well.
Crooked and crowded teeth
are harder to clean, as it is
easier for food to get trapped
between the teeth. This
means a higher risk of tooth
decay and tooth loss, leading
to costly procedures to
correct.

BoXiT Fitness
FEEL YOUR POWER- FIND YOUR SILVER LINING
by Shannah Werner | Tetherow Resident and Co-Owner of BoXIT
Fitness Studio | Photography by Mtn Collective and Barrett Umbarger
BoXiT Fitness Studio has been open in Bend since
November 2018. Meet the women (Shannah and
Ann) and Tetherow resident( Shannah) behind this
unique fitness studio!
The concept for BoXiT Fitness Studios was created
during a girl’s trip to Aruba. Friends and soon-to-be
co-owners, Ann Nolan and Shannah Werner, were
both searching for “their next project.” Shannah,
a long-time Personal Trainer and boxing instruc-
tor, and her family were moving back to Bend and
since learning to box in North Carolina, dreamed
of bringing boxing fitness to Bend. She had owned
a training studio in Bend in the past but wanted to
create something different. Through her newfound
passion for boxing for fitness, she wanted to create
a place of empowerment, community, balance and
positivity. Shannah met Ann while working as a
trainer in Portland (before moving back to Bend)
and the two found a mutual passion for helping/
working with others, building businesses and
empowering others to find silver linings (both had
recently lost loved ones and were
dealing with the grieving process).
While the cornerstone of BoXiT
Fitness Studios is the signature
BoXiT Fit class (55 minutes of full
body workout including warmup,
eight rounds on heavy bags and
core work at the end), the theme of
balance is exemplified by the Yoga,
Cycle, Pilates and Strength Training
classes offered at the studio as well.
This fall, a new class, BoXiT Strong,
has been added to the schedule
and is a combination of boxing and
strength training.
When asking Shannah the Mission of
BoXiT Fitness Studio, she cheerfully
replied, “Our goal is to empower our
community to find balance, embrace
change, enjoy life and live in the
those plans and now offer live virtual and recorded classes as part
of a monthly subscription that don’t require equipment and keep
the participant engaged with the instructor even though it’s not in
person. Ultimately, we want to be THE boxing fitness studio in Bend
and change as many lives as we can!”
Coming out of the pandemic and multiple closures and restric-
tions, BoXiT made some big changes this fall to re-brand and
take the studio offerings and appearance to a new level. Recently,
BoXiT Fitness welcomed Whitney Gomez, a 2024 Olympic
Boxing hopeful, to the team. Whitney brings a wealth of knowl-
edge both in boxing and fitness. Libby Wilson started as a boxing
instructor at BoXiT earlier this year, and spent most of the
summer and early Fall spearheading the re-branding and studio
makeover. Plans of expansion outside Bend are also in the works!
“We also continue to expand our nutrition program at the studio
and are working to collaborate with local dietitians!”
Other great attributes that set BoXiT Fitness apart from any
other studio, Shannah shares, “is that we offer boxing fitness
classes that use 150 lb. water bags and teach boxing technique
and form to maximize the “fun” factor and safety. Another thing
that sets BoXiT Fitness apart from other studios in Bend is that
in addition to the boxing classes, we offer spin, yoga, Pilates and
strength training for one membership fee under one roof. And,
the smaller sizes of our classes mean participants get individual
attention for a group rate! And, we offer a full lineup of LIVE
virtual classes that are easy to do without any equipment.”
“Fitness and exercise is a personal thing. You have to find what
you like, the community you are comfortable in and the instruc-
tors who look out for YOU, your safety, goals and well-being. Find
a place that YOU belong and want to go to, otherwise you won’t
stay consistent and reach your goals.”
BoXiT Fitness Studios is a combination of Shannah’s passion
for working with others to feel better physically and mentally
as well as build a community based on exercise and nutrition
as empowerment and Ann’s business knowledge (Ann and her
husband owned a very successful steakhouse in the early 2000s
in Chicago!) and passion for mentoring and teaching as well.
Ann, who actually lives in Portland, has three kids: Ryan (28),
Katie (26) and Bridget (23). Shannah and her family, husband
Ted, Haley (12) and Teddy (10) have lived in Bend for more
than 11 years with a quick stint in North Carolina and Portland
(2013-2018).

tion, and 20% off their first month of unlimited classes! Be sure to
mark your calendars for an upcoming ‘Save the Date’, November

mately, a desire to find silver linings
in any situation.”  Ann and Shannah
Co-Own the studio and are so grateful
for the incredible team they have
built! Many of these instructors have
been at the studio since it opened,
a rare thing in small businesses and
fitness studios!
Their vision for the studio and beyond
is to continue to build a community
around positive self-empowerment,
creating healthy lifestyle habits through
clean nutrition and exercise, and mental
balance. “The 2020 goal for the studio
was to build an online presence through
live streaming and recorded classes to
expand our reach in Bend and beyond.

guidelines around limiting light pollution and fencing/partition that
disrupt the natural flow of the landscape.” They also love that it is
a fire-wise community. The clubhouse is a bonus for them with its
sports club facility and the new residents swimming pool. “It’s also
super close to the cascade lakes, snow parks, ski resorts, trails and
all outdoors, which my family and I love.”
The Andersons are planning to break ground early next year.
“Since moving here, we have met several people within the
community, which I’ve been fortunate to grow and expand my
career here in Bend. I’m a creative consultant and stylist. I offer
anything from photo styling, art-direction, pre-production, set
design, concept research, and more recently, interior consulta-
tion and styling. A lot of the work I do usually involves arranging
product for placement in an image all while defining the perfect
composition. This can become super tricky depending on the type
of product being used. For instance, a local client of mine, Cairn,
that I was styling involved backpacking gear. I was handed over
a large sleeping bag, camping utensils, a watch, backpack, hiking
shoes, water bottle, jet boil and a camp bed mattress. My job is to
try and decide how to carefully curate and make all these objects
fit seamlessly into a rectangular composition while still being
able to identify them. I love a good challenge, and that’s what
makes styling fun.”
While living in Seattle, Jo worked as a stylist for a corporate
company and worked with photographers to create imagery for
their e-comm site. “We did everything from styling tutus on a
board for product imagery to styling immaculate sets to make it
look like summer in the middle of winter. After about six years
working in corporate, I got pregnant and realized I needed more
flexibility with my work schedule, so I took to freelancing, and
that’s when it all took off! I started reaching out to clients and
finding clients on my own to work together and collaborate. This
is probably hands down the toughest part of my job. No one really
talks about how hard it is to put yourself out there and explain
the services you can offer. But I feel that once I have the client
listening and we make a great connection in providing what-
ever needs the client may have, it’s all worth it. See, with every
client, it’s different. One client may need a stylist on set for a
“We fell for Bend the moment we visited two years ago. We
always wanted to stay at Suttle Lodge in Sisters and visit Central
Oregon. We had the opportunity to do so when we had some time
during my husband’s transition between companies. After our

love. We knew this was the town we wanted to raise our family!”

ly-driven community and outdoors-active lifestyle.”

  • 6. High Desert Living • October 2021 October 2021 • High Desert Living 10 11 publisher’s note I can’t believe fall is officially here. I have to admit, it is one of my favorite times of the year. I love the cooler temps, pumpkins, soups being made, Halloween costumes, and of course, football! Even though summer has gone way too quickly for our liking, the color of fall reminds us of how much the change in season is needed. Perhaps a time to slow down and recharge our batteries. My Bend uniform (yoga pants and flannel) are out and ready!  We are on our 7th issue of High Desert Living, hard to believe. The highlight of what I do is meeting and connecting with each and every one of you and sharing your stories. Thank you for your continued support and thank you for taking the time to meet with us to share and provide feedback on your only Tetherow community publication. As you know, we take a great deal of pride in choosing the right businesses to partner with our community magazine. We have personally met with the businesses you see in High Desert Living to determine if they are the right fit and someone we would FALL! personally be excited to introduce to you. With that said, I would like to personally thank all of our valued sponsors who partner with us to make this magazine free each and every month to Tetherow residents. It is my hope, that as you flip through your neighborhood magazine, you take a moment to notice all the local businesses that support you and consider giving them a chance to earn your business. Have a wonderful, healthy, and safe fall! All the best, Lindsay Resendez and Riney (October’s Pet of the Month) 541-219-1670 lindsay.resendez@n2pub.com Disneyland and Walt Disney World. • 7. High Desert Living • October 2021 October 2021 • High Desert Living 12 13 BEND Brigade BMX young achievers RACING TEAM! Developing a Lifelong Stoke for Bikes One day, while visiting the Ludemans’ home, I toured Allia and Kaia’s rooms. While looking around, I couldn’t help but notice their colorful trophies of different sizes on their shelves and asked what they were from. “BMX racing,” they eagerly replied. “We have a team called the BEND Brigade!” They then showed me their black water bottles with their engraved BEND Brigade silver logo shining bright. I was instantly ecstatic, wanted to learn more, and share their story. Allia and Kaia started BMX racing in August 2018 with the encour- agement and support of their dad, Bob. “They are out there having fun and learning sportsmanship, which is most important. Bob raced BMX during the ‘80s, and then discovered mountain bikes while up in college. His BMX skills transferred well to the moun- tain bike and ultimately propelled him to an 11 year portion of his career in the bike industry and a lifelong enthusiasm for cycling. “Coming from that background and seeing what cycling did for me, it turned into a lifelong sport, and I ride my bike now at a level that I wouldn’t have achieved without BMX.” During the pandemic, the BMX sport saw a huge surge of partici- pation. Being outside, naturally physical distancing, wearing a full face helmet and mask for protection, and community participation are the perfect ingredients to feel safe and have fun. The Ludeman family were thinking about starting a team and did just that at the beginning of 2021. With seven novice and intermediate youth riders, and Bob as manager and coach of the BEND Brigade BMX Racing Team, they are out proudly racing and getting their team jerseys dirty at the Big Sky Park, Bend BMX track. “BMX is very accessible. It’s $8 to race. You need to have a bike, full face helmet, elbow and knee pads, and a long-sleeve shirt and pants. There are loaner bikes and gear at the track and most equipment you can find used too.” The season in Central Oregon is from March-October, with races at two separate tracks, four days a week. “It’s a very flexible sport. You can opt in and out of races when you want. On Wednesday evenings for example, you can participate and still be home in time for dinner.” Trophies, medals, and/or track bucks are awarded to the top three competitors in each class, with the lowest points given to riders competing in three separate Moto’s. “It’s fun watching them line up to redeem their track bucks and excitedly pick out a prize or a piece of candy. An instant gratification from racing.” BMX is an extremely effective tool at building character and long-term skills. Cornering, bike handling, keeping momentum over rough and uneven terrain, corner speed, and power trans- fer all translate to mountain biking and various sports. It builds self confidence, pride, and teaches competitive fundamentals all of which are positive traits. “We are an amateur team, not wanting to be overly serious top-level riders, but developing a lifelong stoke for bikes.” Getting out, having fun as recreational riders, and building a foundation for bigger things is the BEND Brigade way.  Check out the BEND Brigade Instagram page, @bendbriagdebmx, and visit the Bend BMX website usabmx.com to learn more! We connect Central Oregonians to locally grown, raised, and crafted foods through education and outreach. Since 2010, HDFFA has strived to mindfully adapt to the ever-changing needs of our community. Our focus has transi- tioned from land use and policies to the broader food system, including increased access to and education about healthy food. Our four main programs are Agricultural Support, Grow and Give (fresh food donation), VeggieRx (prescription vegetables and fruits), and the annual Food and Farm Directory. We know the economic impact of local purchasing goes far beyond each bundle of carrots that you pick up; each time you choose local foods, you make an investment in your local farms, ranches, and food businesses.  Get Involved! Shop the farmers markets: We are fortunate in Bend to have local farmers markets on both Wednesdays and Saturdays – that’s two opportunities to pick up fresh vegetables, meats, fruits, and more! Make it a date! Take your partner, family member, or good friend out for a local food treat at one of the many restaurants sourcing from and preparing local foods. You can find out more about who is sourcing locally on our Get A Taste phone app. Download it in your app store or visit getataste.org.  Send a local gift: Purchase a Local Foods Gift Box for a new neighbor or friend. Starting the 2020 school year online at Miller Elementary shortly after moving was a little challenging for Jackson, but he had his most favorite pet by his side. In Mr. McCabe’s third-grade class, Riney was part of roll call in the morning and student activities throughout the day. My daughter was also in Mr. McCabe’s third-grade class and would talk about a cute bearded dragon that was always smiling. After seeing him on Webex, I was eager to meet him and share his sweet story to the High Desert Living community.  While only living in the Tetherow community for one year, Riney has certainly lived the rockstar lifestyle. “Everyone asks how we are doing, but they make sure to ask specifically how Riney is,” Holly laughs. In fact, the Barkow family got a chuckle when I reached out to them about featuring Riney as pet of the month because everyone wants to meet him. “He’s such a ham! He knows his name, puffs up his beard when he’s upset, and some- times sleeps in very funny positions, i.e. vertical on his log. He looks like he has a permanent grin on his face; how could you not love him?!”  Riney was purchased at a pet store in Marin County just north of San Francisco as a present for Jackson on his 8th birthday. At 2 and half years of age, Riney has taken a couple different road trips, traveling through Utah, Idaho, Oregon, and California. He likes to soak up the views and sit on the dash of the car for short periods of time. The name “King Riney” just popped into Jackson’s head, and he knew that was the name for him. If Riney could talk for one day, Jackson would ask, “Do you miss your bearded dragon family?” Topping the spoilometer scale of 1-10 at an 11, it is certain that Riney is loved and adored in the Barkow family. He is given his favorite treats often, crickets and meal- worms. “It’s fun to watch him hunt and catch the crickets in his favorite place to hang out, his terrarium.” With a life expectancy of 15 years or longer, he is expected to double in size. “We are already prepared to be the main caretakers when the boys go off to college,” Holly says. “They recommend walking him on a leash, and we are ready for it when the time comes!”  When asking the Barkow family what they love best about Riney, they anxiously replied, “His appearance! He’s cute and loves humans. Riney was intimidating at first because of his appear- ance and the care he requires, for example, heating the terrarium and eating live bugs. He has turned out to be the most gentle, sweet and congenial pet. He is a charmer and eventually every- one falls in love with him!” After meeting Riney, I went home and told my husband, “We need to get a bearded dragon!” With two cats, that might be a challenge, but I instantly fell in love with his calm character and sweetest personality. Thank you, Barkow family, for welcoming us to your home and letting us meet King Riney and share his fun story. He certainly is a one-of-a-kind pet! Even though we weren’t able to bring a complimentary Dog Pack Collar, we hope he was able to enjoy the crickets treat to the fullest. Do you have a special pet you wish to share with the community? • 11. High Desert Living • October 2021 October 2021 • High Desert Living 20 21 high desert living pet tips by Dr. Chad Moles | Blue Sky Veterinary Clinic Halloween is all about having spooky fun and collecting loads of candy. It’s also a great excuse for dressing up your pet and taking them with the family for tricks and treats. But sometimes there are more tricks than treats for pets what with people looking to start trouble and celebratory items that can be toxic.  Here’s a look at five Halloween safety tips from veterinarians at Blue Sky Clinic in Bend, Oregon, for your pets so everyone can get their scare on in a safe and fun manner. 1. KEEP PETS INSIDE FOR THEIR SAFETY. Unfortunately, not everyone has good intentions on Halloween, and pets sometimes become a target. Make sure your pets are accounted for and kept inside on Halloween. Don’t let them out unattended and never let them out of your sight when they’re outdoors. You might want to keep pets inside for a day or two after October 31st for additional safety. 2. ISOLATE FLIGHTY AND HIGH-STRUNG PETS IN A CLOSED ROOM. Not all pets are suited to the comings and goings of trick- or-treaters. They may be frightened by the sight of an un- known person dressed up in a costume at their front door. And other pets may try to take advantage of the constant opening and closing of the front door to slip outside. Put your pets inside a room and close the door instead of taking the risk that your pet may have an adverse reaction to the comings and goings at their front door. 3. KEEP HALLOWEEN CANDY AND GLOW STICKS AWAY FROM PETS. Candies and glow sticks contain ingredients that are toxic to animals. Some ingredients cause a mild irritation in the mouth or di- gestive system while others can cause organ failure if ingested in large enough quantities. Make sure to store all trick or treat bags out of the reach of curious mouths. WE LOVE WHAT WE DO and we love your pets too! “I love that Patrick shows up with a cleaning crew of 3 or 4 people. They can get thru my house in an hour. They are always on time and can squeeze me in last minute if necessary. They practice Covid mask wearing. They bring their own supplies and use natural cleaning products. They are always happy and asking for feedback so they can improve their services. I highly recommend them!!” (541) 280-8736 muddypawscleaners@gmail.com SPECIALIZING IN RESIDENTIAL HOUSEKEEPING AND COMMERCIAL CLEANING SERVICES When it comes to glow sticks, dogs view them as they would a bone and gnaw on them. If a dog breaks open a glow stick, the ingredients contain a liquid known as dibutyl phthalate. The ingredient is viewed as an irritant rather than a toxin, but it can irritate the lining of a dog’s mouth. If your pet ingests something they shouldn’t have, call your vet- erinarian in Bend to get immediate care. The sooner you take action, the better for your pet. 4. PUT JACK-O’-LANTERNS AND CANDLES IN A STABLE AND SAFE LOCATION. If you’re using candles to light up your carved pumpkins, make sure that you place them in a spot where pets can’t easily knock them over. The same goes for lighting candles to set a spooky mood. You don’t want a pet jumping up next to either of these objects and burning themselves or starting a fire. 5. MAKE SURE YOUR PETS ARE COMFORTABLE WEARING A COSTUME. It’s fun to dress up your pets, but your pets might not feel the same way. Put each piece of a costume onto your pet first to make sure they’ll tolerate the sensation of the item on their body and that they don’t overheat. If your pet is comfortable wearing a sweater or a coat, try to find a costume with the same style to make wearing a costume easier on your pet. HALLOWEEN for FIVE Pets Safety Tips
  • 12. High Desert Living • October 2021 October 2021 • High Desert Living 22 23 FOR RAISING KIDS Money Smarts tetherow financial fitness Provided by Joseph Mansfield Regardless of how much money a fam- ily may have, parents have a respon- sibility to teach their children about finances. Starting early, children need to learn about how to be financially responsible once they leave the house and become independent.  Here are three steps parents can take starting today:   1. Find teachable moments. It can be difficult to find time to sit down and talk specifically about money, but natural opportunities to teach pop up practically every day.  For example, you can incorporate financial responsibility into an im- promptu math lesson about money: If you find something the child wants that originally cost $100 and is on sale for 30% off, you can ask how much the new price is – and now that they are only spending $70, what they might do with the leftover $30.   2. Take a lifelong view toward financial literacy. Every child should have a toolkit of basic financial literacy skills by age 18, including concepts such as how to spend, how to save, how to give, and the value of a dollar. This can start very early with an exercise as simple as a three piggy banks analogy. You encourage the child to divide any money he or she receives into three piggy banks: spending, saving, and community/ charity. This shows the concept of different purposes of money rather than having it all be for spending. Re- peating this exercise can help ingrain the habit of saving regularly. By late childhood or adolescence, parents can add concepts such as what it means to invest, what com- panies one might invest in, and how to assess risk with an investment.  You can encourage children in high school to think about college expenses by examining the costs and coming up with a credible college budget. Ask them to consider basic questions: What will you need in or- der to make this happen? What will the family need to supply, and what is the student expected to supply in terms of tuition, books, room and board, transportation, and normal spending money? And parents and grandparents can continue to en- courage responsible, long-term financial responsi- bility by giving young adults an incentive to begin saving for retirement early. If you’re able, and they have earned income, offer to match what they save into a Roth IRA. It’s also wise to encourage contri- butions to a 401(k) at work.    3. Show how it’s done. Your child’s healthy relationship with money be- gins with an open and honest relationship within a family that models good money behavior. These discussions can be challenging, but the fruit is well worth the labor.  Stress education and expect them to do well in school. Parents who do really well in teaching financial literacy typically lead by example – they tend to be savers and are more careful with spending money. Remember to be that example.   This article was written by/for Wells Fargo Advisors and provided courtesy of Joseph Mansfield, Financial Advisor in Bend at 541-633-1927. It’s close to the mountain and lakes and has so many trails out your backdoor!” You will often see the Sullivan family on the nearby trails, moun- tain biking and trail running. “Knox has a special seat on Dad’s bike and will sit in front of the bike seat and put his hands on the handlebars too. He loves it!” They also love to be near any body of water, snowboarding, and wakeboarding. Naturally, Casey gravitates to the outdoor sports and lifestyle as she has a bache- lor’s degree from OSU – Cascades in exercise and sports science. “Growing up in Missoula, Montana, I moved to Bend in 2007 for the similar outdoor recreation.” David also grew up in a similar town, Spokane, Washington, and moved to Bend in 2010 after completing his Orthodontic residency in Ohio at Case Western Reserve University.   David and Casey have been together since 2013 and married in 2016. “We met years prior to 2013 but were both in relationships. In 2013, we ran into each other and happened to both be single. David said, “I’m not playing any games, I’m calling her now.” And the rest is history!  Knox was welcomed into the family in February 2019, just one day apart from Casey’s birthday. He loves riding his bike, any construction vehicles that he calls “scoops,” baseball, basketball, puzzles and books. “He’s the sweetest big brother and is always giving hugs and kisses to his sister. The first thing he does when waking up is go see his sister and give her a kiss. Knox listens well and is the gentlest, even though he’s ALL boy.” He also loves hanging out with Dad in the morning on their patio by the fire pit as Dad sips his coffee and Knox drinks his milk. “It’s our boy time in the morning as the girls are getting up,” David lovingly admits. David started his practice, Sullivan Orthodontics, in 2010 with offices in both Bend and Redmond. He has built an amazing fam- ily-friendly reputation in the Central Oregon community that is keeping him very busy. He has an extensive education, receiving a Bachelor of Science from Villanova University, a Doctorate of Dental Surgery from University of Southern California School of Dentistry and a Master of Science from Case Western Reserve University. It is clear he is passionate about helping patients create beautiful smiles. Baby Ireland, named after Casey’s maiden name, was born in April 2021, sharing a very special birthday with Casey’s grandma. At 4 months old she is very busy rolling over and exploring the world. “Ireland is a content, happy, and an easy baby. She’s always smiling at her big brother.” As David and Casey look into the nearer future they are excited to once again travel and explore different cultures with Knox and Ireland. “We can’t wait to take them snowboarding when they get a little older too!” In the meantime, they love exploring around Bend and the high desert. “We love being outside as much as we can.” Jackson’s Corner, El Sauncho, Wild Rose and The Washington are some of their favorite places to eat. Even though date nights are rarer these days with two young ones, they love going to Bos Taurus for special occasions.  When asking the question, “What do you love about Tetherow?” Casey unhesitatingly replied, “We truly have the best neighbors ever. We will not move because of our neighbors and the rela- tionships we have built in the Tetherow community. They are like family to us!”  You couldn’t have asked for a better answer. Thank you, Casey, David, Knox, and Ireland, for sharing your story with the Tetherow community. It’s stories like these that hit home as to why the Tetherow community is so unique and special. It’s safe to say the Sullivan family won’t be moving anytime soon as they continue to put down roots in Tetherow. Be sure to say hi the next time you see the Sullivans around the neighborhood; you will be so glad you did. Say Hello to
  • 14. High Desert Living • October 2021 October 2021 • High Desert Living 26 27 A N D T H E N S O M E Did you know that the most common chronic disease in children aged 6 to 11 and adolescents aged 12 to 19 is entirely preventable? And adults can get it too. Nine out of 10 adults over the age of 20 have it.  So what is it?  Well, it’s tooth decay.  And there is no better time to share some tooth-shattering facts and helpful tips than during the month when the kids are gobbling up as much candy as we can. And we are talking to the adults out there too. We know you are sneaking candy out of your kid’s stash while feigning innocence. Come on, Halloween just wouldn’t be the same without candy. And we don’t want to spoil your fun. Rather, we want to provide some options so that the joy of eating sweets doesn’t turn into a bigger problem down the road.  The Anatomy of a Tooth First, let’s start with a bit of anatomy to understand better how a cavity forms. The outer portion of the tooth is made of enamel, which provides protection. Below this is the dentin, which is not as hard as enamel and is, therefore, more susceptible to cavities. The pulp is located below the dentin, which houses the nerves and blood supply that keeps the tooth alive.  The Mystery of a Cavity Have you ever wondered why some people get cavities despite meticulous oral hygiene while others who rarely brush don’t?  Well, some people are prone to cavities.  The three leading causes of tooth decay are saliva issues (pH levels), frequent snacking, and poor oral hygiene. And let’s face it, you have bacteria in your mouth – we all do. The bacteria feed on the foods you eat. When eaten, sugary foods and drinks are transformed into acid by bacteria. The acid remains on the tooth, where it slowly wears down the enamel, resulting in a cavity. When the cavity isn’t fixed early on, it can travel from the enamel to the dentin and eventually to the pulp, where it can lead to an infection that can be life-threatening.  How to Prevent Cavities The whole point of this article is to help you PREVENT cavities. And, thankfully, we live in a time where we have multiple options for achieving this. First, brush your teeth for two minutes twice a day. Second, floss every day. Yes, we know it takes time, but trapped food can decompose between your teeth, and we are sure you don’t want to host a little party for your mouth bacteria. Third, fluoride treatments do help prevent cavities. And fourth, consider dental sealants to protect teeth from bacteria that can get trapped in the grooves of your teeth (molars).  Another great option to consider is a treatment Dr. Mike Longlet swears by and uses himself EVERY DAY: CariFree.  CariFree is a tooth decay prevention system that is clinically proven to work. And it doesn’t just help prevent cavities. You see, brushing and flossing are just one of the three primary causes of tooth decay.  Good oral hygiene does not address the pH levels in your mouth. Remember we mentioned saliva issues as a cause of tooth decay? Well, without going too scientific on you, the pH levels inside the mouth can lead to cavities. Too low of a pH can lead to deminer- alization and, eventually, tooth decay. The root cause of cavities is a low pH. CariFree neutralizes the pH levels in your mouth and can rebuild tooth enamel (called remineralization).  So, now you know the anatomy of a tooth. You also know the three leading causes of tooth decay and how to prevent it. So, enjoy your Halloween splurge(s). Just be sure to follow your treat with one or all of the tricks provided in this article. Straight Teeth Last Longer. Straight teeth provide much more than cosmetic benefits. There are medical benefits as well. Crooked and crowded teeth are harder to clean, as it is easier for food to get trapped between the teeth. This means a higher risk of tooth decay and tooth loss, leading to costly procedures to correct. Have you considered Invisalign®? Call today to find out if you are a candidate. Meet the women (Shannah and Ann) and Tetherow resident( Shannah) behind this unique fitness studio! The concept for BoXiT Fitness Studios was created during a girl’s trip to Aruba. Friends and soon-to-be co-owners, Ann Nolan and Shannah Werner, were both searching for “their next project.” Shannah, a long-time Personal Trainer and boxing instruc- tor, and her family were moving back to Bend and since learning to box in North Carolina, dreamed of bringing boxing fitness to Bend. She had owned a training studio in Bend in the past but wanted to create something different. Through her newfound passion for boxing for fitness, she wanted to create a place of empowerment, community, balance and positivity. Shannah met Ann while working as a trainer in Portland (before moving back to Bend) and the two found a mutual passion for helping/ working with others, building businesses and empowering others to find silver linings (both had recently lost loved ones and were dealing with the grieving process). While the cornerstone of BoXiT Fitness Studios is the signature BoXiT Fit class (55 minutes of full body workout including warmup, eight rounds on heavy bags and core work at the end), the theme of balance is exemplified by the Yoga, Cycle, Pilates and Strength Training classes offered at the studio as well. This fall, a new class, BoXiT Strong, has been added to the schedule and is a combination of boxing and strength training. When asking Shannah the Mission of BoXiT Fitness Studio, she cheerfully replied, “Our goal is to empower our community to find balance, embrace change, enjoy life and live in the those plans and now offer live virtual and recorded classes as part of a monthly subscription that don’t require equipment and keep the participant engaged with the instructor even though it’s not in person. Ultimately, we want to be THE boxing fitness studio in Bend and change as many lives as we can!” Coming out of the pandemic and multiple closures and restric- tions, BoXiT made some big changes this fall to re-brand and take the studio offerings and appearance to a new level. Recently, BoXiT Fitness welcomed Whitney Gomez, a 2024 Olympic Boxing hopeful, to the team. Whitney brings a wealth of knowl- edge both in boxing and fitness. Libby Wilson started as a boxing instructor at BoXiT earlier this year, and spent most of the summer and early Fall spearheading the re-branding and studio makeover. Plans of expansion outside Bend are also in the works! “We also continue to expand our nutrition program at the studio and are working to collaborate with local dietitians!”  Other great attributes that set BoXiT Fitness apart from any other studio, Shannah shares, “is that we offer boxing fitness classes that use 150 lb. water bags and teach boxing technique and form to maximize the “fun” factor and safety. Another thing that sets BoXiT Fitness apart from other studios in Bend is that in addition to the boxing classes, we offer spin, yoga, Pilates and strength training for one membership fee under one roof. And, the smaller sizes of our classes mean participants get individual attention for a group rate! And, we offer a full lineup of LIVE virtual classes that are easy to do without any equipment.” “Fitness and exercise is a personal thing. You have to find what you like, the community you are comfortable in and the instruc- tors who look out for YOU, your safety, goals and well-being. Find a place that YOU belong and want to go to, otherwise you won’t stay consistent and reach your goals.”  BoXiT Fitness Studios is a combination of Shannah’s passion for working with others to feel better physically and mentally as well as build a community based on exercise and nutrition as empowerment and Ann’s business knowledge (Ann and her husband owned a very successful steakhouse in the early 2000s in Chicago!) and passion for mentoring and teaching as well. Ann, who actually lives in Portland, has three kids: Ryan (28), Katie (26) and Bridget (23). Shannah and her family, husband Ted, Haley (12) and Teddy (10) have lived in Bend for more than 11 years with a quick stint in North Carolina and Portland (2013-2018). Website: www.boxitfit.com Shannah@boxitfit.com Ann@boxitfit.com 541-706-0210 (Shannah’s cell) As a “thank you” to the community, BoXiT Fitness is offering Tetherow residents their first class for free, a 30 minute consulta- tion, and 20% off their first month of unlimited classes! Be sure to mark your calendars for an upcoming ‘Save the Date’, November 13th, to kick off the holiday season with a special happy hour in honor of celebrating BoXiT Fitness’ refreshed studio and our wonderful community. Many of these instructors have been at the studio since it opened, a rare thing in small businesses and fitness studios! Their vision for the studio and beyond is to continue to build a community around positive self-empowerment, creating healthy lifestyle habits through clean nutrition and exercise, and mental balance. “The 2020 goal for the studio was to build an online presence through live streaming and recorded classes to expand our reach in Bend and beyond. I’m a creative consultant and stylist. I offer anything from photo styling, art-direction, pre-production, set design, concept research, and more recently, interior consulta- tion and styling. A lot of the work I do usually involves arranging product for placement in an image all while defining the perfect composition. This can become super tricky depending on the type of product being used. For instance, a local client of mine, Cairn, that I was styling involved backpacking gear. I was handed over a large sleeping bag, camping utensils, a watch, backpack, hiking shoes, water bottle, jet boil and a camp bed mattress. My job is to try and decide how to carefully curate and make all these objects fit seamlessly into a rectangular composition while still being able to identify them. I love a good challenge, and that’s what makes styling fun.” While living in Seattle, Jo worked as a stylist for a corporate company and worked with photographers to create imagery for their e-comm site. “We did everything from styling tutus on a board for product imagery to styling immaculate sets to make it look like summer in the middle of winter. After about six years working in corporate, I got pregnant and realized I needed more flexibility with my work schedule, so I took to freelancing, and that’s when it all took off! I started reaching out to clients and finding clients on my own to work together and collaborate. This is probably hands down the toughest part of my job. No one really talks about how hard it is to put yourself out there and explain the services you can offer. It tends to be sharp with an intense quality and serves as a warning sign to your body that you are being threat- ened. Once the pain has continued longer than 3-6 months it is now con- sidered chronic pain, even if the original injury is healed. The hard thing with chronic pain is that it’s usually clus- tered with additional symptoms like fatigue, depression, anxiety, frustration, irritability, anger, change of appetite, lifestyle, ect. All of which can be treated or managed with Chinese medicine. Q: Is Acupuncture legit? A: Acupuncture is one of the most scientifically researched methods of pain management. Go onto pubmed. com and search for pain and acupunc- ture to find over 9,800 peer reviewed research articles. Q: How does Acupuncture work? A: Acupuncture is only one modal- ity used in Chinese Medicine. It works so well with any type of pain because the acupuncturist is working directly with the nervous system. • Improve Your Health The Family’s • Strengthens your body’s immune system naturally • Acupuncture reduces stress, anxiety, depression. • Sessions give relief from acute chronic pain from wear tear and injuries, including headaches. • Acupuncture increases gut health, digestion function, sleep regularity and allergies. The needles are almost as thin as a strand of hair. The four basic ways Acupuncture stops pain is: 1.) It Increases circula- tion. 2.) decreases inflammation 3.) It releases natural painkillers in the body 4.) It moves the body into a state of rest and digest known as the para- sympathetic nervous system. Q: Is everyone’s treatment the same? A: No, everyone’s treatment is different and designed for the individual. One treatment session lasts roughly 60 minutes for a course of 12 sessions. For some patients they will feel imme- diate results after the 2nd or 3rd treat- ment and for others they experience a huge breakthrough at their 10th visit. Q: When is it too late to get Acupuncture? A: It is almost never too late. In the past, Acupuncture has been people’s last resort, but more people are going to Traditional Chinese Medicine before electing to get big surgeries or add pharmaceuticals. Q: Is it safe to do this with my current Rx and west- ern medicine care? A: Acupuncture is so safe that cancer centers like MD Anderson in Texas have acupuncturists on staff. Acupuncturists are trained health care profes- sionals that are licensed through the National and State Medical Board. Acupuncture alone does not interfere with current medications. Herbalists are trained to know what formulas will interact with your current medications. Q: What kind of pain conditions can Acupuncture help with? A: The real answer is any kind of pain. I have had patients feel relief from; a five year old injury of an Alligator bite to the hip and thigh area, phantom limb pain, chronic pseudo trigeminal neuralgia, active shingles, to your basic acute pain from shoveling snow and headaches.
