Olde towne vet:
"Old Towne Vet is the best vet in Charleston. They treat my
animals as if they were their own.The staff is so friendly; I
consider all of them very close friends. If you go once, you will
never try anywhere else again.Thank you Old Towne vet for all
of the help you have given me all of these years!"
Maddray flooring:
“Reed did a fabulous job on the floors of our home. He did not
just lay and complete the work including handling removal and
replacement of all furniture. He took time to educate us about
potential issues, guide our choices with his own design input
and most importantly undertook additional remedial work on
the sub floor to prevent future failure from humidity differen-
tials. The floors are now 18 months old and still look stunning.
Maintenance is easy and they have proven very hardwearing. I’d
recommend his skills to anyone who would ask.”
Chris & Sebrina Leigh-Jones 2635 Burden Creek Road, Johns Island
Franklin and associates:
Rather than a “dying gift”; longterm care insurance should be
viewed as a “living gift.”Even though it may be for you and/
or your spouse and paid by you or your company it is really one
of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to the “living”(your
spouse, children, family and other loved ones). The elimination
of much of the anxiety associated with the all-too-common issue
of extended life expectancy and the related burdens and decisions
concerning place, time and the erosion of assets can be addressed
to some degree with the establishment of this protection.
Margaret Ann and I chose Franklin & Associates because of their
expertise and access to quality company providers.Their attention
to detail, willingness to answer questions and patience in support-
ing our review of policy provisions was all that one could expect.
Their ongoing support has exceeded our expectations.

Charleston dentistry:
“I love my dentist! Dr. Ken Johnson is an artist and a perfec-
tionist. Moreover, he is supported by the kindest, most profes-
sional staff imaginable and the newest technology and tools
available. All of this combines to ensure the best possible patient
experience and satisfaction. After years of suffering from severe
dental anxiety, I now actually look forward to my check-ups.”
-S. Gaillard, Downtown Resident
Dawg tired:
“As a very protective and doting pet Mom, I have been reluctant
in the past to leave my pets with anyone when I'm traveling and
I am not comfortable boarding them. All that changed when I
discovered DawgTired.Theirs is a professional staff of people
that really love and care about my pets and don't just show up to
feed and walk them. They send pictures, texts of their status, and
most important, keep them safe and loved in my absence. Also,
their flexible services accommodate boarding and overnight
stays. It's possible to request a regular sitter and they almost
always find a way to make that happen. They also respect my
home and take excellent care of tending to mail, garden, etc.
I highly recommend DawgTired, and so do Tann Mann and
Chutney Cat.” –Holly Herrick
Sun dog cat moon veterinarian:
“Having spent a good portion of my career as the publisher of
a regional dog magazine in the North, I spent the majority of
my days in and out of various veterinary practices and witnessed
both the good and the bad. For the care of my own dogs I chose
to use the holistic approach especially since one of my labs had
suffered with horrible allergies and traditional veterinary care
was not working. One of my biggest challenges moving to a
small southern town was finding a holistic vet for my five dogs.
My prayers were answered the day I walked in to the office of
Sun Dog Cat Moon. Meeting Dr. Roberts and her staff was
love at first sight. She gets it, she totally gets it in every sense
of the word. Sitting on the floor she gets to know
your pet with her comforting hands. Dr. Ruth
is dedicated, compassionate and brilliant.
She thinks outside of the box
solving many issues keep-
ing your pet happy and
healthy and certainly
worth the short drive.” –

He weighs what??? 110 lbs
What is special about your pet: He is a friendly giant.
What’s the funniest story you have about your pet? He won’t

Photos and text submitted by resident Suzanne Kassel Supper Club
Happy fall, neighbors! I never thought I’d say it, but I’m
actually ready for fall. The girl who could live in summer heat all
year round is ready! The beach has brought many good days to
me over the last couple months, but my first hint of cool crisp
air was all too good. I have to admit, walking into work still
fresh and clean from riding my bike instead of hot and sticky
speaks major volumes.
The best things about fall are football, perfect weather so you
can be comfortable in jeans or shorts, beautiful color changes
in nature that make you want to take a picture, and of course…
Crockpots! When I think of fall, I am immediately reminded of
delicious seasonal pumpkin spice beers and hearty, warm, fulfill-
ing food that has cooked all day in a crockpot. In my book, this
is the time of year that you can’t beat walking in the door to a
home-cooked meal by your crockpot and a nice cold beer. And
that my neighbors, is exactly what I have been doing during the
month of October! To get things started this fall, my roommate
Katie Nichols and I hosted a monthly Supper Club at our house
with two other hosts, Shannon Silver and Fallon Sposato. Each
month, our Supper Club meets at a different person’s house and
they provide the meal. For our turn, we started off with drinks
and a charcuterie plate consisting of cheese, chorizo, crackers,
and olives. A couple months back, I went to a luncheon at the
Charleston Library Society and the speaker taught us about
proper hosting etiquette. She mentioned to always start a dinner
party with drinks and appetizers in your ballroom. Well, sorry to
disappoint, but I have no ballroom. However, that didn’t stop us
from drinking and eating cheese in the kitchen to start! For the
main course, we set up in the living room overlooking Colonial
Lake and served slow cooked BBQ, creamy Gouda Mac and
Cheese, and sautéed green beans. For the BBQ, I was cooking
for 12 people so I bought a 10lb Boston butt piece of meat. Let
me tell y’all - that is huge!
Ingredients
	 Boston Butt
	 Brown sugar
	Cumin
	Paprika
	 Chili powder
	Oregano
	Salt/pepper
Directions: The night before, I always like to prepare the
meat so that it can have time to marinade and rest in the fridge
before cooking. Preparing a 10lb piece of meat can be tricky.
Usually, there will be additional fat along the meat that needs
to be trimmed. Carefully take a knife and shave off any of this
excess. Next, combine all the spices in a bowl. There are no mea-
surements here - just use your judgment to make sure there is
enough to hit every inch of meat with some spice! Tip: You will
need to lift up parts of the meat to polish the inside creases with
spices as well. After you have finished rubbing down the meat,
place it in the fridge overnight. Then, the following day, wake up
early and plug in your crockpot for 10-12 hours on low. After
that time and a full day’s work, take two forks and shred the
meat apart into barbeque. My piece of meat created a lot of liq-
uid due to the size so I did have to strain some of it out (always
keep this juice for future stocks!) Lastly, I poured some BBQ
sauce on top of the meat in the crockpot and turned the setting
down to low while we waited to eat.
The BBQ with the homemade Gouda Mac and Cheese and
green beans turned out really well and more importantly we had
a wonderful night. Sharing food with new and old friends will
always create a bond and fun memories. Do y’all participate in
a Supper Club? It is certainly an enjoyable way to catch up with
friends and all get together while celebrating delicious food!

While Charleston has
no shortage of art galler-
ies, Anne saw an oppor-
tunity in the contempo-
rary art scene, believing
that a business focused
on local and regional
abstract artists could be
viable.When she began
curating the art to be
featured in her gallery,
she started with non-
representational painters
and has since expanded
her scope to include
some representational
pieces and photography
noting that she loves to
“mix things up.”Says
Anne,“I see people getting more comfortable mixing styles--even
some of the more traditional art collectors like to throw a fun, less
serious piece into their collection from time to time.”
Despite the diversified inventory, Anne recognizes that most
associate The George Gallery with abstract painting. Given
this reputation, it is no surprise to learn that Anne is inspired
by art and design from the mid-20th century, a connection she
shares with the artists she represents. “Painter Alan Taylor Jef-
fries shows strong influence from artists such as Franz Klein and
Willem de Kooning while other’s connections are not so obvi-
ous. For example, Whitney Kreb’s Tortoise reminds me of the
California/Scandinavian influence of the period--simple, sleek,
clean lines and an organic color palette.”
The George Gallery isn’t only known for its carefully curated
selection of works with mid-century influences; the gallery’s
location is a bit of a surprise for those not familiar with the
activity happening in the mid-to-upper peninsula. Anne’s eyes
were opened to the Elliotborough neighborhood when Trattoria
Lucca opened on Bogard Street. Since then, the area has grown
to include new-favorite restaurants and shops like Xiao Bao
Biscuit, Sugar Bakeshop, and Mac & Murphy. “I felt like The
George Gallery would be in good company,” says Anne.
The uptown location has not stopped the South of Broad set
from visiting, however. Many followers of the local art scene
were drawn to The George Gallery upon learning Anne repre-
sents artist,Tim Hussey. Beyond that, word of mouth has lead
to a steady stream of customers from South of Broad. Anne
notes that she loves working with historic home owners with an

eye for contemporary art, finding these to be some of the most
fun and considerate clients around. South of Broad residents,
Emily and Joshua Broome, are no exception.
Since moving South of Broad last year, Emily and Josh have
strived to stay connected to Cannonborough-Elliottborough,
the first neighborhood where they lived in Charleston. One
night after dinner in the neighborhood, they peeked in The
George Gallery’s windows and, by what they saw, they knew
they had to come back during open hours. They soon returned
and met Anne for the first time, and they were immediately
struck by her engaging and approachable nature. Anne made
them feel welcome and immediately helped them to connect
with the art and the artists she represents, underscoring the role
that relationships play in the art buying experience. Says Emily
of Anne, “Her positive energy is contagious. We love to drop
by on a Saturday afternoon to see what new pieces she has and
what new stories she has to share.”
For the Broomes, a couple passionate about home decorating
and design, Anne’s understanding of the design process has also
been an asset, especially at times when they have been looking
for art to fill a particular room or space. When Emily and Josh
first visited The George Gallery, they were drawn to the work of
Brian Coleman, but they were not quite sure where they could
incorporate it into their home. Over time and with the help
of Anne and her collaborative relationship with the Broome’s
interior designer, they were able to settle on a Brian Coleman
piece that perfectly complements the dark blue grass wallpaper
in their dining room. Says Emily, “You really couldn’t pick a
In her twelve years in the art business prior
to stepping out on her own, Anne Siegfried
remembers some of the thoughts she had: “If
I had my own gallery, I would do things this
way…” Or “If I had my own gallery, I would
love to represent that artist.” In 2012, Anne
decided it was time. She got to work on what
would become The George Gallery, opening its
doors in fall of 2013.
more perfect piece for our dining room. We are already thinking
about where we can put another piece of Brian’s and can’t wait
to see his solo show in October.”
Brian Coleman’s solo show, It’s All in the Wander, opens at The
George Gallery on October 10, 2014.The George Gallery is
also presenting solo shows for Tim Hussey in November and
Melinda Mead Scharstein in December. All three fall shows are
likely to draw collectors who, like the Broomes, are not afraid
to take risks with art in their homes. Says Anne, “There is a
vibrant energy in a home with a mix of different styles.”
Like the homes that display the works of Anne’s represented
artists,The George Gallery and Anne’s passion for her work also
reflect a vibrant energy that continues to attract patrons from
South of Broad and beyond.

The Confederate Home and College, is pleased to announce it’s
premiere event entitled,The Confederate Home Tour of Stu-
dios, on Thursday, November 6, 2014 from 5:00pm to 7:30pm.
The tour is open to the public. Limited tickets are available at
$50.00 each. Wine and hors d’oeuvres will be served.
This event is a rare and exclusive opportunity to visit and experi-
ence the Confederate Home, her secretive lush gardens and the
working studios of 17 successful and accomplished artists and
writers. This is a one of a kind event and all proceeds will ben-
efit the Confederate Home and go towards helping restore and
maintain this cherished and historical building.
The Confederate Home was built circa 1800 and was first the
home of Governor John Geddes with special visitors such as
President James Monroe. It later became the Carolina Hotel
and also housed the federal court. In 1867, in the aftermath of
the Civil War, Ms. Mary Amarinthia Snowden and her sister,
Isabella Yates Snowden, established the building as a refuge and
home for Confederate widows and orphans. Later, a private
library and school was founded for the education of women,
and so the house became the Confederate Home and College.

Harvest Catering and their pickled peach salsa
Allgood Pest Solutions and South of Broad Living magazine
joined forces to raise money for the Charleston Animal Society.
South of Broad Living hosted an inaugural block party to bring
residents together for end of the summer fun and celebrate two
years in print. We all know how much folks in the low country
love their pets so event organizers decided to include four-legged
friends and raise money for the Charleston Animal Society.
The event, hosted on Gibbes Street on Saturday, August 23,
2014, brought hundreds of residents together to enjoy food,
music and games provided by many generous magazine spon-
sors and local businesses. The day was one of the hottest of the
Charleston summer but luckily some of the games as well as
the welcome cool breeze of the power mister offered a chance
to cool off [and tents from EventHaus provided some shel-
ter]. One favorite was a contest where teams had to open a
frozen t-shirt and get it onto one of its members. It’s a whole
lot harder than it sounds! Burwell’s provided delicious sliders,
Ladles provided cold and hot soups, Charleston Place Hotel
had yummy sandwiches, Harvest Catering had a delicious
mango salsa and chip number, Icebox hosted a beverage bar and
Jeni’s served up splendid ice cream. A Charleston Academy of
Music student provided music with her beautiful piano playing,
DJ took over for the second half of the event. Kids played water
balloon toss and had their faces painted by volunteers form St.
Michael’s Church and pets were treated to a massage from Sun
Dog Cat Moon. The photos are evident that humans are not
the only ones who enjoy massages. Neighbors mingled, played
games and had their photo taken on the hanging bed by Caro-
lina Custom Hanging Beds.
The Allgood Pestimonial booth was a center attraction. The
booth, which normally records stories of encounters with pests,
was instead collecting stories of people and their pets. Resi-
dents and their pets entered the booth to record a video about
their lives together. Some were silly accounts of pet shenani-
gans, while other were touching tributes of strong bonds.
Event organizer Michell Champ was thrilled with the com-
munity participation. “It was so much fun for me to see and
meet so many residents, watch people reconnect with friends
they hadn’t seen all summer, and see everyone having a great
time. This will for sure become an annual tradition, the fact
that we were able to raise money for a local organization at the
same time made it even better.” “There are so many sponsors to
thank. A huge thank-you to Low Country Dry Cleaning for
providing 100 goody bags full of items donated from those who
sponsor South of Broad Living giving all who came a bag to take
home with them.

The home at 89 E. Bay Street is an 18th century former water-
front home on Rainbow Row with the retail downstairs and the
residence upstairs. The former resident was Andrew Tunno,
a colorful character that was known as the 'King of the Scots".
He was an early merchant and distinguished attorney that once
argued a case in the US Supreme court in 1790. Andrew Tunno
might have liked to known that another attorney would someday
own his home. Current resident Tom Taft, is a real estate devel-
oper, attorney and former North Carolina state Senator. He is
very passionate about preservation, restoration and all things his-
tory. He appreciates English, French and Chinese antiques and
decorations and wanted his home to reflect his passions. Merrill
Benfield, interior designer, was given the design project to take
the entire house from walls to wallpaper over a brief six-month
time frame. Everything was selected by the designer down to the
silk threads in the monograms to compliment the rooms color
schemes. The overall concept was to stay traditional with the look
of the items that would have been in a prominent residence at
the time, displaying imported items from England and especially
China. The home also features an enormous stone lined cellar
that fills the footprint of the home.

Get Your South of Broad Home Ready for Fall:
Interior Maintenance
1.	Check for drafts. Feel for drafts around the edges of windows
and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the
flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace
seals and repair caulking around window and door frames.
Consider buying heavier or insulated drapery for especially
drafty windows.
2.	Have your furnace inspected. Hire an HVAC professional
to test for leaks, check heating efficiency, and change the fil-
ter. They can also do a carbon monoxide check to ensure air
safety. It’s also a good idea to stock up on extra air filters and
change them every few months.
3.	Winterize air conditioning. If your home has central air
conditioning, it may be necessary to cover your outdoor unit
for winter. If you use window air conditioning units, remove
them or cover to prevent air leaks.
4.	Programmable thermostat. Buy a programmable thermo-
stat, if you don’t have one. If you already have one, check the
temperature settings. Setting your thermostat to lower the
temperature automatically at night and when you’re not home
can result in substantial cost savings.
5.	Test home safety devices. Replace the batteries in all smoke
detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure
they’re working properly.
Exterior Maintenance
1.	Do a roof check. You should be able to do at least a visual
inspection of the roof from the ground. Grab some binoculars
to get a closer look or if you’re able and can do so safely, climb
on up for a better view. Look for missing, damaged, or loose
shingles. If your roof is flat, you may need to remove leaves
and debris.
2.	Check the chimney and fireplace. If you have a wood fireplace
and use it often, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by
a professional.
3.	Inspect siding. Check home exterior for cracks or holes.
Repair them yourself or hire a professional.
5.	Clean the gutters. Hire a service to clear your gutters or do
it yourself. Remove leaves, nests, and debris from gutters and
check for leaks.
6.	Check water drainage.Rainwater downspouts need to be clear of
obstructions and direct water away from foundations, walkways,
and driveways.Add extensions to downspouts if necessary.
7.	Reinforce windows and doors. Remove screens and install
storm windows and doors if you use them. Check caulk and
seals around all doors and windows.
8.	Inspect trees. Check for damaged limbs that may break or
that are too close to power lines or the roof.
9.	Trim landscaping. Cut back bushes, shrubs, and flowers.
10. Bring in flowerpots. If you keep plants or flower in pots year-
round, bring them inside before November. If you replace plants
every year, empty, clean, dry pots and put away for next spring.
11. Plant bulbs. If you plant bulbs for spring, now’s the time to
get them in the ground. Pansies are also a nice fall flower to
plant for a little color.
12. Leaf removal. Rake and remove leaves from the yard. Put
into a compost pile if you have one. Alternatively, put into yard
garbage bags and leave at the curb for community pick up.
13. Fertilize lawn. Applying fall lawn fertilizer will help pre-
vent winter damage and spring weeds. Ask a local garden
center or check online to find out which type of fertilizer you
need and when to apply it. If you have a lawn service, they
should do this for you.
14. Close the pool. If you have a pool, schedule a service to
come and close it for the season.
15. Organize the shed. As your shed is filling up with summer
items in storage, it’s a good time to organize and clean out the
shed. Move summer items to the back and winter stuff up front
for better access. Also, remove any liquids that will freeze.
As you’re enjoying the last bits of summer, make sure that your
home is prepared for the coming fall season. Preventative main-
tenance now will save money on expensive emergency repairs
and wasted energy costs. Properly maintaining your home also
enhances its value and appeal and is less effort than managing
a crisis later. When the chilly weather approaches you and your
home will be ready.

How Can Younger Investors
Cope with Tough Times?
Written by Edward Jones
As Americans, we’re used to thinking that we will inevitably do
better than our parents’ generation. But, this type of progress
may be facing some roadblocks — and this inability to gain
ground, financially, can have real implications for today’s young-
er people and their approach to investing.
Younger Americans — those in their twenties and thirties —
have accrued significantly less wealth than their parents did at
the same age, according to a recent study by the Urban Institute.
Here’s why:
Bursting of housing “bubble”— Many younger people who
bought houses shortly before the housing “bubble”began deflat-
ing in 2006 now find themselves to be “underwater”on their
mortgages - they owe more than their houses are worth. Conse-
quently, they have less opportunity to build home equity — which
has been important for building wealth for past generations.
Student-loan debt — The median balance among all households
with student loan debt is now more than $13,000, according to
the Pew Research Center — and debt levels are much higher for
recent graduates. It can take years to pay off these debts — and
the money being used for debt payments is money that can’t go
toward building wealth.
Wage stagnation — For several years, the job market has been
pretty bad for younger workers. And even those with jobs aren’t
making much headway, because wages, adjusted for inflation,
have largely stagnated for over a decade. Less income clearly
equates to less opportunities for investing and creating wealth.
Still, even given these realities, younger people can help them-
selves build resources for the future and make progress toward
their long-term goals. Here’s how:
For starters, pay yourself first. Set up an automatic payment
each month from your checking or savings account into an
investment vehicle like an IRA. At first, you may only be able to
afford small sums — but, over time, you may be surprised at the
amount you’ve saved.
Next, every time your salary goes up, try to increase the
amount you put into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored
retirement plan. Because you typically contribute pretax dol-
lars to your 401(k) or other plan, the more you put in, the
lower your taxable income. Plus, your money can grow on a
tax- deferred basis.
Also, don’t be “over-cautious” with your investments. Many
younger investors, apparently nervous due to market volatility
of recent years, have become quite conservative, putting rela-
tively large amounts of their portfolio into vehicles that offer
significant protection of principal but little in the way of growth
potential. Financial markets will always fluctuate, and down-
turns will occur — but when you’re young, and you have many
decades in which to invest, you have time to overcome short-
term declines. To achieve your long-term goals, you will need
some growth elements in your portfolio, with the exact amount
based on your risk tolerance and specific objectives.
These aren’t the easiest times for young people. Nonetheless,
with diligence, perseverance and a measure of sacrifice, you can
gain some control over your financial fortunes — so look for
your opportunities.

1. Seawall: The rebuilding of the connection of the High Bat-
tery to the Low Battery at the turn is completed. Also, twelve
large stones on the High Battery were reset for stability. The
City determined that the next priority is repairing the Low
Battery. Selection of a design consultant is underway, and the
design and permitting process may take up to one year.
2. Tourism: Subcommittees on Quality of Life,Transportation,
Special Events, Visitor Orientation and Enforcement have
been meeting over the summer. The Advisory Committee is
expected to issue recommendations to the City by the end of
the year.
3. First Baptist School: The City Council has created a “school
overlay zone” for the school property, like other schools in
residential neighbors in the City. Under the City’s zoning
ordinance, the BZA will determine the conditions on manner
of use of the overlay zone. A committee of the CNA Board,
consisting of Steve Gates, Randy Pelzer, Peter Williams and
Simmons Tate, has been meeting with the Church in antici-
pation of setting these conditions. We are near completing an
agreement covering limits on building footprint, moving the
high school, limits on school size, improved drop-off arrange-
ments, and other matters to submit to the CNA Board. We
plan to review this with Church-Water-Meeting-Tradd
neighbors very soon.

Wide Angle Lunch at Library Society: Vince
Musi,The Art of the Ace Basin
For the last 30 years Vincent J. Musi has
travelled the world photographing every-
thing from volcanoes to mummies, captur-
ing enduring images of vanishing cultures,
history, and archaeology. He currently spe-
cializes in animal portraiture for National
Geographic Magazine, and his work is an
often quirky look at the world of exotic
pets, domestication, and cognition.
In between assignments, Musi, who lives
on Sullivan’s Island, has focused on the
Lowcountry, producing a portfolio cel-
ebrating the ACE Basin for the November
2014 edition of National Geographic. Musi’s
photographs of the Ace Basin tell a story,
in pictures, of an unprecedented 25 years
of public-private partnership that has pro-
tected more than 217,000 beautiful and
biodiverse acres just 30-some miles from
downtown Charleston.

Wide Angle Lunch at Library Society: Bea-
tles vs. Stones
Historian John McMillian has built his career
studying one of the most culturally rich
and politically pivotal decades in American
history: the Sixties. Having explored that
decade’s underground press in his first book,
Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Under-
ground Press and the Rise of Alternative
Media in America, he has turned his atten-
tion to another of the Sixties’defining con-
tributions—its music. In Beatles vs. Stones,
McMillian explores the complex relationship
between these two iconic bands, equal
parts friends and rivals. He reveals how each
came to embody a powerful ideology that,
five decades later, continues to influence
music and culture alike.
McMillian is an assistant professor of Ameri-
can history at Georgia State University. He
earned his PhD at Columbia University, and
from 2001-2010 he taught in the Commit-
tee on Degrees in History and Literature at
Harvard University. He is co-editor of The
Sixties: A Journal of History, Politics and Cul-
ture, which is published bi-annually by Rout-
ledge, and his writing appears in scholarly

Olde towne vet: "Old Towne Vet is the best vet in Charleston. They treat my animals as if they were their own.The staff is so friendly; I consider all of them very close friends. If you go once, you will never try anywhere else again.Thank you Old Towne vet for all of the help you have given me all of these years!" Maddray flooring: “Reed did a fabulous job on the floors of our home. He did not just lay and complete the work including handling removal and replacement of all furniture. He took time to educate us about potential issues, guide our choices with his own design input and most importantly undertook additional remedial work on the sub floor to prevent future failure from humidity differen- tials. The floors are now 18 months old and still look stunning. Maintenance is easy and they have proven very hardwearing. I’d recommend his skills to anyone who would ask.” Chris & Sebrina Leigh-Jones 2635 Burden Creek Road, Johns Island Franklin and associates: Rather than a “dying gift”; longterm care insurance should be viewed as a “living gift.”Even though it may be for you and/ or your spouse and paid by you or your company it is really one of the most thoughtful gifts you can give to the “living”(your spouse, children, family and other loved ones). The elimination of much of the anxiety associated with the all-too-common issue of extended life expectancy and the related burdens and decisions concerning place, time and the erosion of assets can be addressed to some degree with the establishment of this protection. Margaret Ann and I chose Franklin & Associates because of their expertise and access to quality company providers.Their attention to detail, willingness to answer questions and patience in support- ing our review of policy provisions was all that one could expect. Their ongoing support has exceeded our expectations. Lloyd & Margaret Ann Pearson 77 South Battery Charleston dentistry: “I love my dentist! Dr. Ken Johnson is an artist and a perfec- tionist. Moreover, he is supported by the kindest, most profes- sional staff imaginable and the newest technology and tools available. All of this combines to ensure the best possible patient experience and satisfaction. After years of suffering from severe dental anxiety, I now actually look forward to my check-ups.” -S. Gaillard, Downtown Resident Dawg tired: “As a very protective and doting pet Mom, I have been reluctant in the past to leave my pets with anyone when I'm traveling and I am not comfortable boarding them. All that changed when I discovered DawgTired.Theirs is a professional staff of people that really love and care about my pets and don't just show up to feed and walk them. They send pictures, texts of their status, and most important, keep them safe and loved in my absence. Also, their flexible services accommodate boarding and overnight stays. It's possible to request a regular sitter and they almost always find a way to make that happen. They also respect my home and take excellent care of tending to mail, garden, etc. I highly recommend DawgTired, and so do Tann Mann and Chutney Cat.” –Holly Herrick Sun dog cat moon veterinarian: “Having spent a good portion of my career as the publisher of a regional dog magazine in the North, I spent the majority of my days in and out of various veterinary practices and witnessed both the good and the bad. For the care of my own dogs I chose to use the holistic approach especially since one of my labs had suffered with horrible allergies and traditional veterinary care was not working. One of my biggest challenges moving to a small southern town was finding a holistic vet for my five dogs. My prayers were answered the day I walked in to the office of Sun Dog Cat Moon. Meeting Dr. Roberts and her staff was love at first sight. She gets it, she totally gets it in every sense of the word. Sitting on the floor she gets to know your pet with her comforting hands. Dr. Ruth is dedicated, compassionate and brilliant. She thinks outside of the box solving many issues keep- ing your pet happy and healthy and certainly worth the short drive.” – Denise Christensen 843.737.4878 74 Wentworth Street, 3rd Floor Downtown Charleston Licensed Spinning® Program Facility Register for this RIDE at www.charlestonride.com Charleston RIDE™ is pleased to welcome International Spinning® Master Instructor $25 General Public $20 Certified Spinning® Instructor Saturday, October 11 • 10am-7pm BecomeaSpinning® inStructor (Register at spinning.com) MaRk TICknER(from the United Kingdom) In this 90-minute explosive experience, you will see there is a fine line between winning and losing. • 9. 17October South of Broad Living16 South of Broad Living October NeighborhoodNews Photos and text submitted by resident Suzanne Kassel Supper Club Happy fall, neighbors! I never thought I’d say it, but I’m actually ready for fall. The girl who could live in summer heat all year round is ready! The beach has brought many good days to me over the last couple months, but my first hint of cool crisp air was all too good. I have to admit, walking into work still fresh and clean from riding my bike instead of hot and sticky speaks major volumes. The best things about fall are football, perfect weather so you can be comfortable in jeans or shorts, beautiful color changes in nature that make you want to take a picture, and of course… Crockpots! When I think of fall, I am immediately reminded of delicious seasonal pumpkin spice beers and hearty, warm, fulfill- ing food that has cooked all day in a crockpot. In my book, this is the time of year that you can’t beat walking in the door to a home-cooked meal by your crockpot and a nice cold beer. And that my neighbors, is exactly what I have been doing during the month of October! To get things started this fall, my roommate Katie Nichols and I hosted a monthly Supper Club at our house with two other hosts, Shannon Silver and Fallon Sposato. Each month, our Supper Club meets at a different person’s house and they provide the meal. For our turn, we started off with drinks and a charcuterie plate consisting of cheese, chorizo, crackers, and olives. A couple months back, I went to a luncheon at the Charleston Library Society and the speaker taught us about proper hosting etiquette. She mentioned to always start a dinner party with drinks and appetizers in your ballroom. Well, sorry to disappoint, but I have no ballroom. However, that didn’t stop us from drinking and eating cheese in the kitchen to start! For the main course, we set up in the living room overlooking Colonial Lake and served slow cooked BBQ, creamy Gouda Mac and Cheese, and sautéed green beans. For the BBQ, I was cooking for 12 people so I bought a 10lb Boston butt piece of meat. Let me tell y’all - that is huge! Ingredients Boston Butt Brown sugar Cumin Paprika Chili powder Oregano Salt/pepper Directions: The night before, I always like to prepare the meat so that it can have time to marinade and rest in the fridge before cooking. Preparing a 10lb piece of meat can be tricky. Usually, there will be additional fat along the meat that needs to be trimmed. Carefully take a knife and shave off any of this excess. Next, combine all the spices in a bowl. There are no mea- surements here - just use your judgment to make sure there is enough to hit every inch of meat with some spice! Tip: You will need to lift up parts of the meat to polish the inside creases with spices as well. After you have finished rubbing down the meat, place it in the fridge overnight. Then, the following day, wake up early and plug in your crockpot for 10-12 hours on low. After that time and a full day’s work, take two forks and shred the meat apart into barbeque. My piece of meat created a lot of liq- uid due to the size so I did have to strain some of it out (always keep this juice for future stocks!) Lastly, I poured some BBQ sauce on top of the meat in the crockpot and turned the setting down to low while we waited to eat. The BBQ with the homemade Gouda Mac and Cheese and green beans turned out really well and more importantly we had a wonderful night. Sharing food with new and old friends will always create a bond and fun memories. Do y’all participate in a Supper Club? It is certainly an enjoyable way to catch up with friends and all get together while celebrating delicious food! • 10. 19October South of Broad Living18 South of Broad Living October While Charleston has no shortage of art galler- ies, Anne saw an oppor- tunity in the contempo- rary art scene, believing that a business focused on local and regional abstract artists could be viable. When she began curating the art to be featured in her gallery, she started with non- representational painters and has since expanded her scope to include some representational pieces and photography noting that she loves to “mix things up.”Says Anne,“I see people getting more comfortable mixing styles--even some of the more traditional art collectors like to throw a fun, less serious piece into their collection from time to time.” Despite the diversified inventory, Anne recognizes that most associate The George Gallery with abstract painting. Given this reputation, it is no surprise to learn that Anne is inspired by art and design from the mid-20th century, a connection she shares with the artists she represents. “Painter Alan Taylor Jef- fries shows strong influence from artists such as Franz Klein and Willem de Kooning while other’s connections are not so obvi- ous. For example, Whitney Kreb’s Tortoise reminds me of the California/Scandinavian influence of the period--simple, sleek, clean lines and an organic color palette.” The George Gallery isn’t only known for its carefully curated selection of works with mid-century influences; the gallery’s location is a bit of a surprise for those not familiar with the activity happening in the mid-to-upper peninsula. Anne’s eyes were opened to the Elliotborough neighborhood when Trattoria Lucca opened on Bogard Street. Since then, the area has grown to include new-favorite restaurants and shops like Xiao Bao Biscuit, Sugar Bakeshop, and Mac & Murphy. “I felt like The George Gallery would be in good company,” says Anne. The uptown location has not stopped the South of Broad set from visiting, however. Many followers of the local art scene were drawn to The George Gallery upon learning Anne repre- sents artist,Tim Hussey. Beyond that, word of mouth has lead to a steady stream of customers from South of Broad. South of Broad residents, Emily and Joshua Broome, are no exception. Since moving South of Broad last year, Emily and Josh have strived to stay connected to Cannonborough-Elliottborough, the first neighborhood where they lived in Charleston. One night after dinner in the neighborhood, they peeked in The George Gallery’s windows and, by what they saw, they knew they had to come back during open hours. They soon returned and met Anne for the first time, and they were immediately struck by her engaging and approachable nature. Anne made them feel welcome and immediately helped them to connect with the art and the artists she represents, underscoring the role that relationships play in the art buying experience. Says Emily of Anne, “Her positive energy is contagious. We love to drop by on a Saturday afternoon to see what new pieces she has and what new stories she has to share.” For the Broomes, a couple passionate about home decorating and design, Anne’s understanding of the design process has also been an asset, especially at times when they have been looking for art to fill a particular room or space. When Emily and Josh first visited The George Gallery, they were drawn to the work of Brian Coleman, but they were not quite sure where they could incorporate it into their home. Over time and with the help of Anne and her collaborative relationship with the Broome’s interior designer, they were able to settle on a Brian Coleman piece that perfectly complements the dark blue grass wallpaper in their dining room. Says Emily, “You really couldn’t pick a In her twelve years in the art business prior to stepping out on her own, Anne Siegfried remembers some of the thoughts she had: “If I had my own gallery, I would do things this way…” Or “If I had my own gallery, I would love to represent that artist.” In 2012, Anne decided it was time. She got to work on what would become The George Gallery, opening its doors in fall of 2013. more perfect piece for our dining room. We are already thinking about where we can put another piece of Brian’s and can’t wait to see his solo show in October.” Brian Coleman’s solo show, It’s All in the Wander, opens at The George Gallery on October 10, 2014.The George Gallery is also presenting solo shows for Tim Hussey in November and Melinda Mead Scharstein in December. All three fall shows are likely to draw collectors who, like the Broomes, are not afraid to take risks with art in their homes. Says Anne, “There is a vibrant energy in a home with a mix of different styles.” Like the homes that display the works of Anne’s represented artists,The George Gallery and Anne’s passion for her work also reflect a vibrant energy that continues to attract patrons from South of Broad and beyond. In 1867, in the aftermath of the Civil War, Ms. Mary Amarinthia Snowden and her sister, Isabella Yates Snowden, established the building as a refuge and home for Confederate widows and orphans. Later, a private library and school was founded for the education of women, and so the house became the Confederate Home and College. • 15. 29October South of Broad Living28 South of Broad Living October NeighborhoodNewsNeighborhoodNews Harvest Catering and their pickled peach salsa Allgood Pest Solutions and South of Broad Living magazine joined forces to raise money for the Charleston Animal Society. South of Broad Living hosted an inaugural block party to bring residents together for end of the summer fun and celebrate two years in print. We all know how much folks in the low country love their pets so event organizers decided to include four-legged friends and raise money for the Charleston Animal Society. The event, hosted on Gibbes Street on Saturday, August 23, 2014, brought hundreds of residents together to enjoy food, music and games provided by many generous magazine spon- sors and local businesses. The day was one of the hottest of the Charleston summer but luckily some of the games as well as the welcome cool breeze of the power mister offered a chance to cool off [and tents from EventHaus provided some shel- ter]. One favorite was a contest where teams had to open a frozen t-shirt and get it onto one of its members. It’s a whole lot harder than it sounds! Burwell’s provided delicious sliders, Ladles provided cold and hot soups, Charleston Place Hotel had yummy sandwiches, Harvest Catering had a delicious mango salsa and chip number, Icebox hosted a beverage bar and Jeni’s served up splendid ice cream. A Charleston Academy of Music student provided music with her beautiful piano playing, DJ took over for the second half of the event. Kids played water balloon toss and had their faces painted by volunteers form St. Michael’s Church and pets were treated to a massage from Sun Dog Cat Moon. The photos are evident that humans are not the only ones who enjoy massages. Neighbors mingled, played games and had their photo taken on the hanging bed by Caro- lina Custom Hanging Beds. The Allgood Pestimonial booth was a center attraction. The booth, which normally records stories of encounters with pests, was instead collecting stories of people and their pets. Resi- dents and their pets entered the booth to record a video about their lives together. Some were silly accounts of pet shenani- gans, while other were touching tributes of strong bonds. Event organizer Michell Champ was thrilled with the com- munity participation. “It was so much fun for me to see and meet so many residents, watch people reconnect with friends they hadn’t seen all summer, and see everyone having a great time. This will for sure become an annual tradition, the fact that we were able to raise money for a local organization at the same time made it even better.” “There are so many sponsors to thank. A huge thank-you to Low Country Dry Cleaning for providing 100 goody bags full of items donated from those who sponsor South of Broad Living giving all who came a bag to take home with them. The home at 89 E. Bay Street is an 18th century former water- front home on Rainbow Row with the retail downstairs and the residence upstairs. The former resident was Andrew Tunno, a colorful character that was known as the 'King of the Scots". He was an early merchant and distinguished attorney that once argued a case in the US Supreme court in 1790. Andrew Tunno might have liked to known that another attorney would someday own his home. Current resident Tom Taft, is a real estate devel- oper, attorney and former North Carolina state Senator. He is very passionate about preservation, restoration and all things his- tory. He appreciates English, French and Chinese antiques and decorations and wanted his home to reflect his passions. Merrill Benfield, interior designer, was given the design project to take the entire house from walls to wallpaper over a brief six-month time frame. Everything was selected by the designer down to the silk threads in the monograms to compliment the rooms color schemes. The overall concept was to stay traditional with the look of the items that would have been in a prominent residence at the time, displaying imported items from England and especially China. The home also features an enormous stone lined cellar that fills the footprint of the home.
  • 18. 35October South of Broad Living34 South of Broad Living October HomemattersSubmitted and written by Susan Sellers Get Your South of Broad Home Ready for Fall: Interior Maintenance 1. Check for drafts. Feel for drafts around the edges of windows and doors. A good tip is to use a lighted candle and if the flame flickers, there’s most likely a draft. If necessary, replace seals and repair caulking around window and door frames. Consider buying heavier or insulated drapery for especially drafty windows. 2. Have your furnace inspected. Hire an HVAC professional to test for leaks, check heating efficiency, and change the fil- ter. They can also do a carbon monoxide check to ensure air safety. It’s also a good idea to stock up on extra air filters and change them every few months. 3. Winterize air conditioning. If your home has central air conditioning, it may be necessary to cover your outdoor unit for winter. If you use window air conditioning units, remove them or cover to prevent air leaks. 4. Programmable thermostat. Buy a programmable thermo- stat, if you don’t have one. If you already have one, check the temperature settings. Setting your thermostat to lower the temperature automatically at night and when you’re not home can result in substantial cost savings. 5. Test home safety devices. Replace the batteries in all smoke detectors and carbon monoxide devices and test to make sure they’re working properly. Exterior Maintenance 1. Do a roof check. You should be able to do at least a visual inspection of the roof from the ground. Grab some binoculars to get a closer look or if you’re able and can do so safely, climb on up for a better view. Look for missing, damaged, or loose shingles. If your roof is flat, you may need to remove leaves and debris. 2. Check the chimney and fireplace. If you have a wood fireplace and use it often, have your chimney cleaned and inspected by a professional. 3. Inspect siding. Check home exterior for cracks or holes. Repair them yourself or hire a professional. 5. Clean the gutters. Hire a service to clear your gutters or do it yourself. Remove leaves, nests, and debris from gutters and check for leaks. 6. Check water drainage.Rainwater downspouts need to be clear of obstructions and direct water away from foundations, walkways, and driveways.Add extensions to downspouts if necessary. 7. Reinforce windows and doors. Remove screens and install storm windows and doors if you use them. Check caulk and seals around all doors and windows. 8. Inspect trees. Check for damaged limbs that may break or that are too close to power lines or the roof. 9. Trim landscaping. Cut back bushes, shrubs, and flowers. 10. Bring in flowerpots. If you keep plants or flower in pots year- round, bring them inside before November. If you replace plants every year, empty, clean, dry pots and put away for next spring. 11. Plant bulbs. If you plant bulbs for spring, now’s the time to get them in the ground. Pansies are also a nice fall flower to plant for a little color. 12. Leaf removal. Rake and remove leaves from the yard. Put into a compost pile if you have one. Alternatively, put into yard garbage bags and leave at the curb for community pick up. 13. Fertilize lawn. Applying fall lawn fertilizer will help pre- vent winter damage and spring weeds. Ask a local garden center or check online to find out which type of fertilizer you need and when to apply it. If you have a lawn service, they should do this for you. 14. Close the pool. If you have a pool, schedule a service to come and close it for the season. 15. Organize the shed. As your shed is filling up with summer items in storage, it’s a good time to organize and clean out the shed. Move summer items to the back and winter stuff up front for better access. Also, remove any liquids that will freeze. As you’re enjoying the last bits of summer, make sure that your home is prepared for the coming fall season. Preventative main- tenance now will save money on expensive emergency repairs and wasted energy costs. Properly maintaining your home also enhances its value and appeal and is less effort than managing a crisis later. When the chilly weather approaches you and your home will be ready. Including the only one in Midtown Charleston. www.edwardjones.com How Can Younger Investors Cope with Tough Times? Written by Edward Jones As Americans, we’re used to thinking that we will inevitably do better than our parents’ generation. But, this type of progress may be facing some roadblocks — and this inability to gain ground, financially, can have real implications for today’s young- er people and their approach to investing. Younger Americans — those in their twenties and thirties — have accrued significantly less wealth than their parents did at the same age, according to a recent study by the Urban Institute. Here’s why: Bursting of housing “bubble”— Many younger people who bought houses shortly before the housing “bubble”began deflat- ing in 2006 now find themselves to be “underwater”on their mortgages - they owe more than their houses are worth. Conse- quently, they have less opportunity to build home equity — which has been important for building wealth for past generations. Student-loan debt — The median balance among all households with student loan debt is now more than $13,000, according to the Pew Research Center — and debt levels are much higher for recent graduates. It can take years to pay off these debts — and the money being used for debt payments is money that can’t go toward building wealth. Wage stagnation — For several years, the job market has been pretty bad for younger workers. And even those with jobs aren’t making much headway, because wages, adjusted for inflation, have largely stagnated for over a decade. Less income clearly equates to less opportunities for investing and creating wealth. Still, even given these realities, younger people can help them- selves build resources for the future and make progress toward their long-term goals. Here’s how: For starters, pay yourself first. Set up an automatic payment each month from your checking or savings account into an investment vehicle like an IRA. At first, you may only be able to afford small sums — but, over time, you may be surprised at the amount you’ve saved. Next, every time your salary goes up, try to increase the amount you put into your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plan. Because you typically contribute pretax dol- lars to your 401(k) or other plan, the more you put in, the lower your taxable income. Plus, your money can grow on a tax- deferred basis. Also, don’t be “over-cautious” with your investments. Many younger investors, apparently nervous due to market volatility of recent years, have become quite conservative, putting rela- tively large amounts of their portfolio into vehicles that offer significant protection of principal but little in the way of growth potential. Financial markets will always fluctuate, and down- turns will occur — but when you’re young, and you have many decades in which to invest, you have time to overcome short- term declines. To achieve your long-term goals, you will need some growth elements in your portfolio, with the exact amount based on your risk tolerance and specific objectives. These aren’t the easiest times for young people. Nonetheless, with diligence, perseverance and a measure of sacrifice, you can gain some control over your financial fortunes — so look for your opportunities. Seawall: The rebuilding of the connection of the High Bat- tery to the Low Battery at the turn is completed. Also, twelve large stones on the High Battery were reset for stability. The City determined that the next priority is repairing the Low Battery. Selection of a design consultant is underway, and the design and permitting process may take up to one year. 2. Tourism: Subcommittees on Quality of Life,Transportation, Special Events, Visitor Orientation and Enforcement have been meeting over the summer. The Advisory Committee is expected to issue recommendations to the City by the end of the year. 3. First Baptist School: The City Council has created a “school overlay zone” for the school property, like other schools in residential neighbors in the City. Under the City’s zoning ordinance, the BZA will determine the conditions on manner of use of the overlay zone. A committee of the CNA Board, consisting of Steve Gates, Randy Pelzer, Peter Williams and Simmons Tate, has been meeting with the Church in antici- pation of setting these conditions. We are near completing an agreement covering limits on building footprint, moving the high school, limits on school size, improved drop-off arrange- ments, and other matters to submit to the CNA Board. We plan to review this with Church-Water-Meeting-Tradd neighbors very soon. BEAUTIFULLY CONFIDENT, INSIDE AND OUT. Having explored that decade’s underground press in his first book, Smoking Typewriters: The Sixties Under- ground Press and the Rise of Alternative Media in America, he has turned his atten- tion to another of the Sixties’defining con- tributions—its music. In Beatles vs. Stones, McMillian explores the complex relationship between these two iconic bands, equal parts friends and rivals. He reveals how each came to embody a powerful ideology that, five decades later, continues to influence music and culture alike. McMillian is an assistant professor of Ameri- can history at Georgia State University. He earned his PhD at Columbia University, and from 2001-2010 he taught in the Commit- tee on Degrees in History and Literature at Harvard University. He is co-editor of The Sixties: A Journal of History, Politics and Cul- ture, which is published bi-annually by Rout- ledge, and his writing appears in scholarly journals, magazines, and major newspapers.
