NotePublisher’s
As I wrap up this issue and get it ready for print, I can’t help
but reflect on how precious life is and how quickly time flies by.
Someone asked me recently how long I have been publishing the
magazine.This August issue marks Canterwood Lifestyle’s 72nd
issue, six years of being in print. Of those issues, I have now offi-
cially published 17. Over the years this magazine has seen many
changes, and this past month, I am so pleased to announce a very
important addition to our production team.We have been blessed
to welcome an incredibly talented and tenacious Phyllis Varjian as
our very own Canterwood Lifestyles editor and writer. She officially
started working with us in the background a few months ago,
but really worked hard to put together our July issue, a true cof-
fee table work of art. Although Phyllis moved into Canterwood
recently, she is gifted with curiosity and an incredible passion for
learning. Her phenomenal journalism background and ability to
weave words into works of art will bring you much entertainment
and provide an education on this rich community each month
as you turn the pages of the magazine. How many of you really
knew that much about flags?
As you turn the pages this month, don’t hesitate to read our
“Neighbors Night Out” piece, and RSVP for our August night
out at the ball game. At the very least, send in your email so
that you are added to our monthly neighbor social invitations.
Without sending either myself or Phyllis your email, you will
miss out on opportunities to get out and meet new neighbors,
““
have experiences to learn more about the community you live in,
or just relax with a night out of the house enjoying pleasantries!
I hope you like the photo of my assistant publisher “Jasper”. We
enjoyed a nice walk in Paradise last summer. Every year our fam-
ily takes an annual camping trip in August and this year we are
looking forward to celebrating the “Dog Days of Summer”on
Lake Chelan, cooling off in the water, and sipping wine in the
vineyards. Don’t hesitate to send in your stories or favorite “Dog
Days of Summer”memories or pastimes for our future issues!
In neighborly spirit,

My tip for the “Dog Days of Summer” is the proper use of “Max A/C.”
What do you do when you hop into a hot car? Turn the fan on
high and A/C on Max, right?
WRONG!! That is the slowest way to cool your car, truck or
SUV. Max A/C recirculates the air from inside the car and cools
it off. So if the air in the car is hotter than outside, it will take
longer to cool your car off.
Here’s what you should do: roll down all your windows and put
the A/C in the normal position. That will draw air from outside
(cooler than inside), cool it and force it into the passenger com-
partment. Once the air inside the car is about the same tem-
perature as outside, then roll up the windows and switch A/C
control to MAX and enjoy the coolness.

Jurassic World is a film that takes place twenty two years after
the monstrosity of horrible events that was known as Jurassic
Park. But now, Jurassic World is a fully functional theme park.
Many guests come to visit and witness real life dinosaurs. But
when the attendance is decreasing rapidly, the park makes a
desperate move to spike the guest numbers, and continue to
make money. They decide to make a genetically modified dino-
saur. This new dinosaur is bigger than a T-Rex, and smarter
than a velociraptor. Right before the new attraction featuring
the new dinosaur is about to be revealed to the public, the

JurassicPark (the first one) was one of the best

and the storyline was fascinating to anyone who

NeighborhoodNews
Animal waste is never a nice surprise in the front yard of a
neighbor. When walking your animals, please pick up after
them when they leave “presents” in your neighbor’s lawn.
Camouflaging the waste by kicking it under leaves or branch-
es, instead of picking it up, is not the answer either. And,
empty lots are not meant to be toilets for our pets.
When families do yard work, they don’t enjoy finding animal waste
hiding under leaves or mulch,or bags of dog waste thrown in the
forested areas. The ACC asks everyone to please be respectful of
your neighbor’s property and pick up after your animals!

Cottages
leasing quickly!
By Phyllis Varjian, Staff Writer Canterwood resident
Why? Because Fido or Phoebe love the hot sunshine? Because
Fido and Phoebe hate the hot sunshine? Because Fido and
Phoebe are lazy pooches who are even lazier when it’s toasty out-
side? Wrong, wrong and wrong! Yes, it is hot…Yes, some dogs
love and others hate the sun, and, most all hate the heat.
Given the opportunity, most domestic dogs would go relax in the shade
and drink a cold one on a hot day! But,none of this has anything to do
with why we call the dry,hot summer days the“dog days of summer.”
Actually, the phrase,“the dog days of summer”has a celestial ori-
gin. The “dog days of summer”are approximately (depending on
what calendar you use), from mid-July to mid-September when
the DOG STAR, SIRIUS, the brightest star in the constellation
CANIS Major (Big Dog), coincides with the rising of the sun.
In ancient cultures, all kinds of unpleasantness such as oppres-
sively high humidity, widespread droughts, raging fires, extreme
heat occurred when the DOG STAR, SIRIUS, was twinkling
intensely from the heavens.
The Romans associated such miserable weather with the influence
of the DOG STAR. Hence, dog days were considered an evil time
when dogs acted strangely – panting, drooling excessively and being
lethargic. And,likewise, humans were indolent and listless. The time
of the dog days became the hottest period during the summer…the
dog days of summer. The old Farmer’s Almanac even says that these
are the days with the least rainfall in the northern hemisphere.
Therefore, the hot, muggy dry days between mid-July and mid-
September are considered a time of stagnation – the lazy, hazy
dog days of summer – when we all wish a cool breeze would
blow away the heat and lingering lethargy.
MAN’S BEST FRIEND… the dog!
Over 500 million dogs roam the earth today. Most are NOT
pets, but feral (wild) or community dogs. Only, a very small
percentage of dogs sleep in, or near, their owner’s bed!
Dogs are the oldest domesticated animals, with their human
interactions dating back 40,000 years. Descending from the wolf,
the word “dog”came from the Middle English word, dogge.
Early on, dogs did not have the same level of societal acceptance
as they do today. Our loyal companions, according to Wikipedia
and others, were first thought to be man’s best friend by Freder-
ick II, the King of Prussia, in 1789, who called one of his Italian
greyhounds, his “best friend.”
But,besides delicate lap dogs who graced royal courts in Europe
and beyond, dogs were functional animals who were not described
endearingly, but rather as vicious, unfriendly, snarling beasts. In
America, the first time dogs were referred to as “man’s best friend,”
was in a poem, published in a New York journal in 1821 that said:
“The faithful dog – why should I strive
To speak his merits, while they live
In every beast, and man’s best friend
Does often at his heels attend.”
Gradually, over 200 years, societies began to embrace the dog
as our “best friend.” However, this change in attitude might be
attributed, in part, to a change in dog behavior when the rabies
vaccine was introduced in 1869.
In the twentieth century, Ogden Nash, a popular American
humorist and poet, wrote a lot about dogs and always character-
ized them as our best friends.
Although most dogs do not have jobs, per se, dogs do perform
many services such as hunting, assisting individuals with dis-
abilities, herding, search and rescue activities and providing
companionship. In America, these faithful, loving creatures
have “pawed” their way, very slowly, into our hearts.
In our community, walking your dog is a necessary and favorite
social pastime, a chance to say “hi” to your neighbors and enjoy
the always changing lush Canterwood landscape.
The dogs pictured in our collage either have the privilege of
living in Canterwood or visit frequently. At the very top are
my own two “kids,” Hanky Panky, my 10-year-old Portie, (Por-
tuguese water dog), and my 7-year-old Chloeanne, a retired,
national prize-winning standard poodle.
Hanky is so lazy that his main physical act is to bark at everyone
who passes by our front door. Chloeanne is the princess who
struts when she plays ball, drinks water from a bottle and refuses
to walk in the rain without her own raincoat and boots. We call
them the Beauty and the Beast!
We love our dogs … we teach them … we play with them …
we work with them, and, always, they are our “best friends.”
A toast to the all the Canterwood puppies who enjoy the Canterwood
Lifestyle and are building community, one new doggie at a time!

The fabric of Canterwood is continually
changing as original residents who built
spacious, custom homes several years ago
are gradually downsizing and moving
on, while young enthusiastic families are
discovering the same joy and security of
raising their children in our perennially
attractive community of stately homes,
gracing the gentles curves of our forested
Canterwood landscape.
A NEW TRADITION
One of those “newbie” families is the
Corleys, a charming family of four plus
their dashing dog, Harlow.The Corley
family moved into Canterwood two
years ago when they purchased a majestic
Federalist-Georgian style home, quite an
uncommon style in the Northwest, that
is nestled perfectly into a corner on a cul-

versity Place. A tall, handsome fellow,
Justin, sincerely enjoys his profession
– assisting patients in leading pain-free,
comfortable lives. But, in his spare time,
it’s all about family as he hikes and bikes
with them in Canterwood and Gig
Harbor exploring new trails and paths
through our woodlands. And, when
he can manage to leave behind all his
responsibilities, he enjoys golfing, and
crabbing from his boat, docked in Gig
Harbor. As his spouse, Holly, men-
tioned, “Justin’s real therapy is being out
on the water … he really likes the peace-
ful serenity of the water.” continued...
A very attractive and fashion-conscious
mom, Holly has worked for 16 years at
LaborWorks, a private industrial staff-
ing firm. For the past eight years, she
has been the district manager of seven
Washington branches of LaborWorks.
She met Justin in high school, but didn’t
begin dating him until several years later
when she saw him at a social activity
in Tacoma. They were married on Fox
Island in 2007. Now, Holly is dedicated
to her family, and, as she repeatedly told
me, “it’s always family first with every-
thing we do.” Their inviting home has
many pictures of their family enjoying
their holiday traditions and relaxing with
the kids on vacation. Traveling to any-
where “hot,” like Mexico, is their passion,
and to travel globally when their children
are more mature is one of their dreams.
HAVING FUN
For now though they have been busy all
summer traveling to baseball tournaments
with their son,Jayce, who enjoys playing all
kinds of sports – soccer, football, baseball
and riding a dirt bike with his Dad. He
played little league baseball,(and his Dad
helped with the coaching),during the
school year.This summer,Jayce joined a
tournament baseball league,playing with the
Tides Outlaws. Almost every weekend,the
family packed up and traveled to watch their
son play with the Outlaws. In the fall,Jayce
will turn his attention to football, and play
his first year with the Peninsula Seahawks,a
youth football team,and,of course,his Dad
will be coaching the kids,too!
The most petite members of this ener-
getic family are indeed the spunkiest
– 3-year-old Kennedy and her puppy, a
miniature 11-month-old goldendoodle
, Harlow, her best friend. Pint-sized
Harlow joined the family last year as a
Christmas gift for the Corley children.
Kennedy and Harlow are best buds as
they race around the yard and Kennedy
drives her battery-operated Cadillac
with Harlow riding shotgun – quite
an amazing sight! Kennedy is called
“spicy” by her teachers at the Arcadia
Montessori School in Gig Harbor, and
she certainly is as she expresses her
delightful views about everything in
sight! A dynamic little lady she proudly
showed me her best baby doll, Curly, and
described about how she loves to play
with all her baby dolls – and, of course,
Harlow likes to play with them, too!
But, Kennedy also is a burgeoning bal-
lerina who takes dance at Harbor Dance
and gymnastics at NASA. Whatever
Kennedy does, it is always spirited and
Mom and Dad have their eyes following
this active little one, all the time!
As the fall approaches, that means time
for football, and the Corleys are super
fans! A sports and outdoors oriented fam-
ily, they always find time to gather around
the TV and support their favorite home-
town team – the Seahawks, of course!
Enjoying the holidays is another impor-
tant and fun time for this family. Justin
and Holly host Thanksgiving dinner and
Christmas Eve celebrations for their
families at their large family home in
Canterwood. Holly described a unique
tradition – a North Pole breakfast every
year, the day after Thanksgiving.
Members of the Harbor Christian Cen-
ter, Holly and Justin are responsible
community citizens and try to give back
whenever they can. Whether it is help-
ing stock the food bank at the Salvation
Army, or volunteering their time for
children’s activities, they both realize the
importance of supporting their home-
town. They chose Canterwood because
they liked the sense of security here, the
mixture of great people and it just feels
like home. As Holly related to me, “Can-
terwood and Gig Harbor – this is our
home, and we plan on living here the rest
of our lives.”

Air Masters … A Team Of True Masters In
The Air Conditioning And Heating Business!
By Phyllis Varjian, Staff writer | Canterwood resident
Heating & Air ConditioningHeating & Air Conditioning
For several years,Steve Krecker and Mark
Timmerman were friendly competitors as
heating/air conditioning professionals serv-
ing Kitsap Peninsula customers from Port
Orchard. Steve,a native of Long Island,
NY had established Air Masters in 1986
and Mark,a local tradesman,after serv-
ing an HVAC apprenticeship in Seattle,
developed his own company,Mark Air,in
Port Orchard in 1996. Side by side,as two
separate shops, they competed in the same
town, selling the same kinds of products to
the same customers,but most importantly,
sharing the same business philosophy:
the customer always comes first! Finally,
in 2010,they merged their companies
and became partners under the banner of
Steve’s company,Air Masters,Inc.,to best
serve all their residential and commercial
customers in Kitsap,Mason,Pierce and Jef-
ferson counties – from bridge to bridge.
OUTSTANDING OWNERS
Giving Back...
In 2012, Air Masters became an inde-
pendently-owned and operated Lennox
Premier Dealer supported by a full line
of energy efficient Lennox heating and
cooling products as well as Mitsubishi
Ductless Heat Pumps, Pure Air IAQ sys-
tems, and Kohler power generators. All
service calls, new installations, and retrofits
are handled by their own, well-trained
employees. Only electrical work over 60
volts is outsourced. As Mark stated, Len-
nox was a private company until the 1990s,
and is still family operated, with equip-
ment coming directly from the Lennox
manufacturing site in Iowa to Air Masters
without the middle man, the distribu-
tor. That means manufacturer savings are
passed on directly to the customer with
lower prices on Lennox equipment. Cur-
rently, the most popular heating system
is a hybrid one which uses an economical
heat pump.Then, below 35 to 40 degrees,
an efficient gas furnace unit will automati-
cally kick on as a dual fuel source.
To become a Lennox Premier Dealer is
not an easy task. As Mark explained, very
few Lennox dealers are authorized Pre-
mier Dealers. This designation is based on
the number of years of service; the number
of sales and a 95 percent, or above, cus-
tomer satisfaction rating as determined by
an independently evaluated Lennox survey
of each customer. To earn and maintain
this designation Air Masters must provide
their customers with this objective format
for evaluating their performance, and only
those who achieve and continue to meet
Lennox’s high standard can identify them-
selves as Premier Dealers. Besides being a
Premier Lennox Dealer, Air Masters has
received the Angie’s List Super Service
Award, presented to only the top 5 percent
of their contractors, an A+ BBB rating
since 1998, and for the past three years,
they have been honored with the Reader’s
Choice Award in the heating/air-condi-
tioning category by West Sound Home &
Garden Magazine. Basically, between the
bridges, Air Masters beats all its competi-
tion with the highest rating of all heating
and air conditioning companies! With
testimonial after testimonial supporting
their outstanding work, these awards are
quite an honor, especially when consider-
ing their strong competition.
Steve and Mark are very articulate and
savvy owners who focus on continually
educating their staff so they will always
provide quality workmanship and
dependable, as well as affordable, ser-
vice. They just don’t talk about quality,
they show quality in all their profes-
sional activities.They hold monthly staff
meetings with all 13 employees where
they emphasizes safety, first; continual
education about Lennox products, sec-
ond; then, they brainstorm on how to
improve their processes, third; and, finally,
they share the “ATTA BOY” praises
from their recent customers as well as a
discussion about how they can provide
even better service for their 4,000 active
customers! And, in order to provide the
highest quality service, all service techs
must pass a Lennox assessment test and
be proficient at installing Lennox equip-
ment as well as offering the most reliable
service on all other brands too.
Steve and Mark are constantly building
an awareness culture based on the ques-
tion: what do customers really want when
they call us with their problems? They
believe that the heart of their efforts
is based on their philosophy – called
WITY, an acronym for What’s Important
To You – the customer! From your first
interaction on the phone with Lena Price,
a charming and knowledgeable opera-
tions manager to their home-comfort
analyst who evaluates your home for the
most efficient and affordable system that
will fit your lifestyle, you will be pleased
with their professional attitude and per-
formance. The analyst will directly ask:
what is most important to you? Comfort?
Efficiency? Price? Then, he will describe
low interest financing, local utility rebates
and other special options. And, because
Air Masters is a premier dealer, the ana-
lyst can offer rebates and discounts from
Lennox that are not available to other
Lennox dealers without this designation.
After every installation of a new system
from Air Masters,a PIV is conducted –
Post Installation Visit – where Steve,Mark,
or one of their comfort analysts visits with
the customer and asks if they are really hap-
py with their system, and,if so,would they
refer others to their business. As Mark said,
“We are a successful small business and we
want to form a relationship with our cus-
tomers,so they call us again and again and
recommend us to others.”
As small business owners, Steve and
Mark know the value of supporting
their community, and they support many
hometown activities. As Marks believes,
“We feel it only makes sense to express
our gratitude in ways that are helpful to
the most important members of our com-
munity – the children…” Since 2010, Air
Masters has donated over 2,500 pounds
of food items to the South Kitsap food
bank, and will give discounts if customers
do, too. Additionally, they support Hid-
den Creeks Youth Camp Colman, Project
Holiday where they fulfilled the wishes
of 13 children, last year, and the SK Back
to School Celebration where Air Mas-
ters donated several fully-stocked back-
packs, and they dispersed 2000 football
backpacks stocked with school supplies.
Plus, they sponsor they sponsor many
local peninsula sports teams. Lena Price
actively supports local nonprofits and
works with the homebuilders association.
Air Masters is a member of the Bremer-
ton, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, and Bel-
fair Chambers of Commerce.
And their fully-restored (by Steve, a
classic car builder and collector) 1955
Chevy truck with its red, white and blue
all-American coloring has become their
icon of an outstanding business, and two
extraordinary owners who will drive that
extra mile to build good will and ben-
eficial relationships with their custom-
ers and their community. As they say,
“Quality doesn’t cost… it pays!”

If you have a favorite recipe you would like to share, please send it to
janfalls@comcast.net.
To Assemble:
• 5 minced scallions
• ¼ C toasted pine nuts
• ¾ lb feta, cubed or crumbled as a second choice
• 15 fresh basil leaves, cut into chiffonade (if you like fresh
basil, add more)
Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.Toss the eggplant,peppers,onion and
garlic with the olive oil, salt and pepper on a large baking sheet.
Roast for 40 minutes,until browned,turning once with a spatula.
2. Meanwhile, cook the orzo until tender. Drain and transfer to
a large serving bowl. Add the roasted vegetables to the pasta,
include all the drippings to pasta. Add the garbanzo beans
and Kalamata olives. Combine dressing and pour on the pasta
and vegetables. At this point, if making a day ahead, don’t add
last four ingredients until just before serving.
Let salad cool to room temperature, then add the scallions, nuts,
feta and basil. Season to taste, and serve at room temperature.
This recipe can be lightened up by using less dressing on the orzo.
I like it lightly dressed, as the ingredients speak for themselves.

  • 4. 76 August The Canterwood LifestyleThe Canterwood Lifestyle August NotePublisher’s As I wrap up this issue and get it ready for print, I can’t help but reflect on how precious life is and how quickly time flies by. Someone asked me recently how long I have been publishing the magazine. This August issue marks Canterwood Lifestyle’s 72nd issue, six years of being in print. Of those issues, I have now offi- cially published 17. Over the years this magazine has seen many changes, and this past month, I am so pleased to announce a very important addition to our production team.We have been blessed to welcome an incredibly talented and tenacious Phyllis Varjian as our very own Canterwood Lifestyles editor and writer. She officially started working with us in the background a few months ago, but really worked hard to put together our July issue, a true cof- fee table work of art. Although Phyllis moved into Canterwood recently, she is gifted with curiosity and an incredible passion for learning. Her phenomenal journalism background and ability to weave words into works of art will bring you much entertainment and provide an education on this rich community each month as you turn the pages of the magazine. How many of you really knew that much about flags? As you turn the pages this month, don’t hesitate to read our “Neighbors Night Out” piece, and RSVP for our August night out at the ball game. At the very least, send in your email so that you are added to our monthly neighbor social invitations. Without sending either myself or Phyllis your email, you will miss out on opportunities to get out and meet new neighbors, ““ have experiences to learn more about the community you live in, or just relax with a night out of the house enjoying pleasantries! I hope you like the photo of my assistant publisher “Jasper”. We enjoyed a nice walk in Paradise last summer. Every year our fam- ily takes an annual camping trip in August and this year we are looking forward to celebrating the “Dog Days of Summer”on Lake Chelan, cooling off in the water, and sipping wine in the vineyards. Don’t hesitate to send in your stories or favorite “Dog Days of Summer”memories or pastimes for our future issues! In neighborly spirit, Lucie Pezzner 425-269-9800 Lucie.pezzner@n2pub.com Dear Canterwood residents, Heisyourfriend, yourpartner, yourdefender, your dog.Youarehislife,hislove,hisleader.Hewillbe yours, faithfulandtrue, tothelastbeatofhisheart. Youoweittohimtobeworthyofsuchdevotion. - Unknown Author NeighborhoodNews My tip for the “Dog Days of Summer” is the proper use of “Max A/C.” What do you do when you hop into a hot car? Turn the fan on high and A/C on Max, right? WRONG!! That is the slowest way to cool your car, truck or SUV. Max A/C recirculates the air from inside the car and cools it off. So if the air in the car is hotter than outside, it will take longer to cool your car off. Here’s what you should do: roll down all your windows and put the A/C in the normal position. That will draw air from outside (cooler than inside), cool it and force it into the passenger com- partment. Once the air inside the car is about the same tem- perature as outside, then roll up the windows and switch A/C control to MAX and enjoy the coolness. mile a minute How To Cool Off A Hot Dog! GREAT BIRTHDAYS! NeighborhoodNews Jurassic World is a film that takes place twenty two years after the monstrosity of horrible events that was known as Jurassic Park. But now, Jurassic World is a fully functional theme park. Many guests come to visit and witness real life dinosaurs. But when the attendance is decreasing rapidly, the park makes a desperate move to spike the guest numbers, and continue to make money. They decide to make a genetically modified dino- saur. This new dinosaur is bigger than a T-Rex, and smarter than a velociraptor. Right before the new attraction featuring the new dinosaur is about to be revealed to the public, the Movie Review By Josie Hampton, Canterwood resident dinosaur manages to escape her enclosure, and cause havoc throughout the park. Long story short, the humans keep mak- ing the same mistake. This film is clev- erly written with amazing onscreen CGI. It is an exciting and thrill- ing experience with accomplished actors such as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dal- las Howard, who produces a comical yet believable perfor- mance. But there are many dark scenes including peril and blood. I would recommend this film for any- one 10-years-old or up, and it is a must see for anyone and everyone who cherished the experience of the original Jurassic Park. 2kids kids JurassicPark (the first one) was one of the best movies of its time.To this day its CGI is still superior, and the storyline was fascinating to anyone who has ever wondered about dinosaurs. The new addition to the story of JurassicParkknown as JurassicWorld was not a disappointment. Camouflaging the waste by kicking it under leaves or branch- es, instead of picking it up, is not the answer either. And, empty lots are not meant to be toilets for our pets. • 8. 1514 August The Canterwood LifestyleThe Canterwood Lifestyle August 1111 South 376th Street • Milton, WA 98354 License Pending 253-336-8312 | MeridianAtStoneCreek.com Cottages leasing quickly! By Phyllis Varjian, Staff Writer Canterwood resident Why? Because Fido or Phoebe love the hot sunshine? Because Fido and Phoebe hate the hot sunshine? Because Fido and Phoebe are lazy pooches who are even lazier when it’s toasty out- side? Wrong, wrong and wrong! Yes, it is hot…Yes, some dogs love and others hate the sun, and, most all hate the heat. Given the opportunity, most domestic dogs would go relax in the shade and drink a cold one on a hot day! But,none of this has anything to do with why we call the dry,hot summer days the“dog days of summer.” Actually, the phrase,“the dog days of summer”has a celestial ori- gin. The “dog days of summer”are approximately (depending on what calendar you use), from mid-July to mid-September when the DOG STAR, SIRIUS, the brightest star in the constellation CANIS Major (Big Dog), coincides with the rising of the sun. In ancient cultures, all kinds of unpleasantness such as oppres- sively high humidity, widespread droughts, raging fires, extreme heat occurred when the DOG STAR, SIRIUS, was twinkling intensely from the heavens. The Romans associated such miserable weather with the influence of the DOG STAR. Hence, dog days were considered an evil time when dogs acted strangely – panting, drooling excessively and being lethargic. And,likewise, humans were indolent and listless. The time of the dog days became the hottest period during the summer…the dog days of summer. The old Farmer’s Almanac even says that these are the days with the least rainfall in the northern hemisphere. Therefore, the hot, muggy dry days between mid-July and mid- September are considered a time of stagnation – the lazy, hazy dog days of summer – when we all wish a cool breeze would blow away the heat and lingering lethargy. MAN’S BEST FRIEND… the dog! Over 500 million dogs roam the earth today. Most are NOT pets, but feral (wild) or community dogs. Only, a very small percentage of dogs sleep in, or near, their owner’s bed! Dogs are the oldest domesticated animals, with their human interactions dating back 40,000 years. Descending from the wolf, the word “dog”came from the Middle English word, dogge. Early on, dogs did not have the same level of societal acceptance as they do today. Our loyal companions, according to Wikipedia and others, were first thought to be man’s best friend by Freder- ick II, the King of Prussia, in 1789, who called one of his Italian greyhounds, his “best friend.” But,besides delicate lap dogs who graced royal courts in Europe and beyond, dogs were functional animals who were not described endearingly, but rather as vicious, unfriendly, snarling beasts. In America, the first time dogs were referred to as “man’s best friend,” was in a poem, published in a New York journal in 1821 that said: “The faithful dog – why should I strive To speak his merits, while they live In every beast, and man’s best friend Does often at his heels attend.” Gradually, over 200 years, societies began to embrace the dog as our “best friend.” However, this change in attitude might be attributed, in part, to a change in dog behavior when the rabies vaccine was introduced in 1869. In the twentieth century, Ogden Nash, a popular American humorist and poet, wrote a lot about dogs and always character- ized them as our best friends. Although most dogs do not have jobs, per se, dogs do perform many services such as hunting, assisting individuals with dis- abilities, herding, search and rescue activities and providing companionship. In America, these faithful, loving creatures have “pawed” their way, very slowly, into our hearts. In our community, walking your dog is a necessary and favorite social pastime, a chance to say “hi” to your neighbors and enjoy the always changing lush Canterwood landscape. The dogs pictured in our collage either have the privilege of living in Canterwood or visit frequently. At the very top are my own two “kids,” Hanky Panky, my 10-year-old Portie, (Por- tuguese water dog), and my 7-year-old Chloeanne, a retired, national prize-winning standard poodle. Hanky is so lazy that his main physical act is to bark at everyone who passes by our front door. Chloeanne is the princess who struts when she plays ball, drinks water from a bottle and refuses to walk in the rain without her own raincoat and boots. We call them the Beauty and the Beast! We love our dogs … we teach them … we play with them … we work with them, and, always, they are our “best friends.” A toast to the all the Canterwood puppies who enjoy the Canterwood Lifestyle and are building community, one new doggie at a time! • 10. 1918 August The Canterwood LifestyleThe Canterwood Lifestyle August The fabric of Canterwood is continually changing as original residents who built spacious, custom homes several years ago are gradually downsizing and moving on, while young enthusiastic families are discovering the same joy and security of raising their children in our perennially attractive community of stately homes, gracing the gentles curves of our forested Canterwood landscape. A NEW TRADITION One of those “newbie” families is the Corleys, a charming family of four plus their dashing dog, Harlow. The Corley family moved into Canterwood two years ago when they purchased a majestic Federalist-Georgian style home, quite an uncommon style in the Northwest, that is nestled perfectly into a corner on a cul- de-sac. Justin and Holly Corley are the epitome of young parents - full of energy and life - as they race around after their spunky 3-year-old daughter Kennedy and 7-year-old, All-American son, Jayce. Natives of the South Sound area, (Justin from University Place, and Holly from Tacoma), Justin graduated from Arizona State University and received his doc- torate in Chiropractic from the Palmer School of Chiropractic, in San Jose, CA. About ten years ago, he joined his father, Ed, a chiropractor of 35 years, at his dad’s business, Pacific Wellness in Uni- versity Place. A tall, handsome fellow, Justin, sincerely enjoys his profession – assisting patients in leading pain-free, comfortable lives. But, in his spare time, it’s all about family as he hikes and bikes with them in Canterwood and Gig Harbor exploring new trails and paths through our woodlands. And, when he can manage to leave behind all his responsibilities, he enjoys golfing, and crabbing from his boat, docked in Gig Harbor. As his spouse, Holly, men- tioned, “Justin’s real therapy is being out on the water … he really likes the peace- ful serenity of the water.” continued... A very attractive and fashion-conscious mom, Holly has worked for 16 years at LaborWorks, a private industrial staff- ing firm. For the past eight years, she has been the district manager of seven Washington branches of LaborWorks. She met Justin in high school, but didn’t begin dating him until several years later when she saw him at a social activity in Tacoma. They were married on Fox Island in 2007. Now, Holly is dedicated to her family, and, as she repeatedly told me, “it’s always family first with every- thing we do.” Their inviting home has many pictures of their family enjoying their holiday traditions and relaxing with the kids on vacation. Traveling to any- where “hot,” like Mexico, is their passion, and to travel globally when their children are more mature is one of their dreams. HAVING FUN For now though they have been busy all summer traveling to baseball tournaments with their son,Jayce, who enjoys playing all kinds of sports – soccer, football, baseball and riding a dirt bike with his Dad. He played little league baseball,(and his Dad helped with the coaching),during the school year. This summer,Jayce joined a tournament baseball league, playing with the Tides Outlaws. Almost every weekend, the family packed up and traveled to watch their son play with the Outlaws. In the fall,Jayce will turn his attention to football, and play his first year with the Peninsula Seahawks,a youth football team, and,of course, his Dad will be coaching the kids, too! The most petite members of this ener- getic family are indeed the spunkiest – 3-year-old Kennedy and her puppy, a miniature 11-month-old goldendoodle , Harlow, her best friend. Pint-sized Harlow joined the family last year as a Christmas gift for the Corley children. Kennedy and Harlow are best buds as they race around the yard and Kennedy drives her battery-operated Cadillac with Harlow riding shotgun – quite an amazing sight! Kennedy is called “spicy” by her teachers at the Arcadia Montessori School in Gig Harbor, and she certainly is as she expresses her delightful views about everything in sight! A dynamic little lady she proudly showed me her best baby doll, Curly, and described about how she loves to play with all her baby dolls – and, of course, Harlow likes to play with them, too! But, Kennedy also is a burgeoning bal- lerina who takes dance at Harbor Dance and gymnastics at NASA. Whatever Kennedy does, it is always spirited and Mom and Dad have their eyes following this active little one, all the time! As the fall approaches, that means time for football, and the Corleys are super fans! A sports and outdoors oriented fam- ily, they always find time to gather around the TV and support their favorite home- town team – the Seahawks, of course! Enjoying the holidays is another impor- tant and fun time for this family. Justin and Holly host Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas Eve celebrations for their families at their large family home in Canterwood. Holly described a unique tradition – a North Pole breakfast every year, the day after Thanksgiving. Members of the Harbor Christian Cen- ter, Holly and Justin are responsible community citizens and try to give back whenever they can. Whether it is help- ing stock the food bank at the Salvation Army, or volunteering their time for children’s activities, they both realize the importance of supporting their home- town. They chose Canterwood because they liked the sense of security here, the mixture of great people and it just feels like home. As Holly related to me, “Can- terwood and Gig Harbor – this is our home, and we plan on living here the rest of our lives.” NeighborhoodNews Familys p o t l i g h t Meet The Corleys… Where Family Is Always First! • 12. 2322 August The Canterwood LifestyleThe Canterwood Lifestyle August BUSINESSbeat Air Masters … A Team Of True Masters In The Air Conditioning And Heating Business! By Phyllis Varjian, Staff writer | Canterwood resident Heating & Air ConditioningHeating & Air Conditioning For several years,Steve Krecker and Mark Timmerman were friendly competitors as heating/air conditioning professionals serv- ing Kitsap Peninsula customers from Port Orchard. Steve,a native of Long Island, NY had established Air Masters in 1986 and Mark,a local tradesman, after serv- ing an HVAC apprenticeship in Seattle, developed his own company,Mark Air,in Port Orchard in 1996. Side by side,as two separate shops, they competed in the same town, selling the same kinds of products to the same customers, but most importantly, sharing the same business philosophy: the customer always comes first! Finally, in 2010,they merged their companies and became partners under the banner of Steve’s company,Air Masters,Inc.,to best serve all their residential and commercial customers in Kitsap,Mason,Pierce and Jef- ferson counties – from bridge to bridge. OUTSTANDING OWNERS Giving Back... In 2012, Air Masters became an inde- pendently-owned and operated Lennox Premier Dealer supported by a full line of energy efficient Lennox heating and cooling products as well as Mitsubishi Ductless Heat Pumps, Pure Air IAQ sys- tems, and Kohler power generators. All service calls, new installations, and retrofits are handled by their own, well-trained employees. Only electrical work over 60 volts is outsourced. As Mark stated, Len- nox was a private company until the 1990s, and is still family operated, with equip- ment coming directly from the Lennox manufacturing site in Iowa to Air Masters without the middle man, the distribu- tor. That means manufacturer savings are passed on directly to the customer with lower prices on Lennox equipment. Cur- rently, the most popular heating system is a hybrid one which uses an economical heat pump. Then, below 35 to 40 degrees, an efficient gas furnace unit will automati- cally kick on as a dual fuel source. To become a Lennox Premier Dealer is not an easy task. As Mark explained, very few Lennox dealers are authorized Pre- mier Dealers. This designation is based on the number of years of service; the number of sales and a 95 percent, or above, cus- tomer satisfaction rating as determined by an independently evaluated Lennox survey of each customer. To earn and maintain this designation Air Masters must provide their customers with this objective format for evaluating their performance, and only those who achieve and continue to meet Lennox’s high standard can identify them- selves as Premier Dealers. Besides being a Premier Lennox Dealer, Air Masters has received the Angie’s List Super Service Award, presented to only the top 5 percent of their contractors, an A+ BBB rating since 1998, and for the past three years, they have been honored with the Reader’s Choice Award in the heating/air-condi- tioning category by West Sound Home & Garden Magazine. Basically, between the bridges, Air Masters beats all its competi- tion with the highest rating of all heating and air conditioning companies! With testimonial after testimonial supporting their outstanding work, these awards are quite an honor, especially when consider- ing their strong competition. Steve and Mark are very articulate and savvy owners who focus on continually educating their staff so they will always provide quality workmanship and dependable, as well as affordable, ser- vice. They just don’t talk about quality, they show quality in all their profes- sional activities. They hold monthly staff meetings with all 13 employees where they emphasizes safety, first; continual education about Lennox products, sec- ond; then, they brainstorm on how to improve their processes, third; and, finally, they share the “ATTA BOY” praises from their recent customers as well as a discussion about how they can provide even better service for their 4,000 active customers! And, in order to provide the highest quality service, all service techs must pass a Lennox assessment test and be proficient at installing Lennox equip- ment as well as offering the most reliable service on all other brands too. Steve and Mark are constantly building an awareness culture based on the ques- tion: what do customers really want when they call us with their problems? They believe that the heart of their efforts is based on their philosophy – called WITY, an acronym for What’s Important To You – the customer! From your first interaction on the phone with Lena Price, a charming and knowledgeable opera- tions manager to their home-comfort analyst who evaluates your home for the most efficient and affordable system that will fit your lifestyle, you will be pleased with their professional attitude and per- formance. The analyst will directly ask: what is most important to you? Comfort? Efficiency? Price? Then, he will describe low interest financing, local utility rebates and other special options. And, because Air Masters is a premier dealer, the ana- lyst can offer rebates and discounts from Lennox that are not available to other Lennox dealers without this designation. After every installation of a new system from Air Masters,a PIV is conducted – Post Installation Visit – where Steve,Mark, or one of their comfort analysts visits with the customer and asks if they are really hap- py with their system, and,if so,would they refer others to their business. As Mark said, “We are a successful small business and we want to form a relationship with our cus- tomers,so they call us again and again and recommend us to others.” As small business owners, Steve and Mark know the value of supporting their community, and they support many hometown activities. As Marks believes, “We feel it only makes sense to express our gratitude in ways that are helpful to the most important members of our com- munity – the children…” Since 2010, Air Masters has donated over 2,500 pounds of food items to the South Kitsap food bank, and will give discounts if customers do, too. Additionally, they support Hid- den Creeks Youth Camp Colman, Project Holiday where they fulfilled the wishes of 13 children, last year, and the SK Back to School Celebration where Air Mas- ters donated several fully-stocked back- packs, and they dispersed 2000 football backpacks stocked with school supplies. Plus, they sponsor they sponsor many local peninsula sports teams. Lena Price actively supports local nonprofits and works with the homebuilders association. Air Masters is a member of the Bremer- ton, Gig Harbor, Port Orchard, and Bel- fair Chambers of Commerce. And their fully-restored (by Steve, a classic car builder and collector) 1955 Chevy truck with its red, white and blue all-American coloring has become their icon of an outstanding business, and two extraordinary owners who will drive that extra mile to build good will and ben- eficial relationships with their custom- ers and their community. To Assemble: • 5 minced scallions • ¼ C toasted pine nuts • ¾ lb feta, cubed or crumbled as a second choice • 15 fresh basil leaves, cut into chiffonade (if you like fresh basil, add more) Directions: 1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.Toss the eggplant, peppers, onion and garlic with the olive oil, salt and pepper on a large baking sheet. Roast for 40 minutes, until browned, turning once with a spatula. 2. Meanwhile, cook the orzo until tender. Drain and transfer to a large serving bowl. Add the roasted vegetables to the pasta, include all the drippings to pasta. Add the garbanzo beans and Kalamata olives. Combine dressing and pour on the pasta and vegetables. At this point, if making a day ahead, don’t add last four ingredients until just before serving. Let salad cool to room temperature, then add the scallions, nuts, feta and basil. Season to taste, and serve at room temperature. This recipe can be lightened up by using less dressing on the orzo. I like it lightly dressed, as the ingredients speak for themselves. Summer Salads NeighborhoodNews The Dog Days of August are about picnics, easy dinners and barbeques.
