Rui Gomes is the Chief Information Officer at São Sebastião Hospital in Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal. He and his small team built an integrated electronic patient record system called Medtrix to centralize patient information across the hospital. Medtrix was developed using Visual Studio .NET 2003 and has now been updated to use Visual Studio 2008 and Windows Presentation Foundation. The system allows hospital staff to access patients' full clinical information from Tablet PCs anywhere in the 317-bed facility. Rui is proud that Medtrix was built in-house to meet the needs of the public hospital rather than purchasing an expensive external system.
