The Hermeneutic code refers to narrative enigmas or mysteries introduced in a story that are not fully explained. These codes create interest for the audience as they try to solve the mystery throughout the film. Film theorist Roland Barthes identified five major codes that can influence audience interest, such as shots suggesting a character is being watched or followed. In the film Cannibal High, the student filmmakers tried placing a partial answer at the end to draw the conclusion that the many deaths at the school were caused by a creature lurking inside, specifically referring to the creature "Cannibal".
