5. Introduction
• HutheesingTemple is the best known Jain temple in Ahmedabad in Gujarat, India.
•The construction of the temple was initiated originally planned by Seth Hutheesing
Kesarisingh, the construction was supervised and completed by his wife Shethani
Harkunvarba.
•The total cost was approximately Rs.8 lakhs. then a major sum, the temple is dedicated to
Dharmanatha, the fifteenth JainTirthankar.
•Lockwood de Forest who was an associate of Muggenbhai Hutheesing.
•The temple was built during a famine in Gujarat. Building the temple employed hundreds
of skilled artisans which supported them for a period of two years, the temple is managed
by a Hutheesing family trust.
•The temple architect was Premchand Salat, the moolnayak is marble image of the 15th
Tirthankara, Lord Dharamnath.
•The main temple houses 11 deities, six in basement and five in three bay sanctuary, the
main shrine lies on the east and temple is covered with a big dome supported by twelve
ornate pillars.
•In addition there are 52 shrines, each adorned with an image of aTirthankara, the
secondary shrines form a long gallery its three sides. It houses 238 stone images, 83 metal
images and 21 yantras.
•The front is ornamented by a dome shaped structure.The temple has a unique
Manastambha inspired by the Jain Manastambha and the Kirtistambha at Chittore in
Rajasthan

7. History and Background
•One of the best and the richest temple HUTHEESING JAIN TEMPLE was built by
SETH HUTHEESING the son of SETH KESARISING, as who by the mid-19th century
established a flourishing silk trade business .
•As when Hutheesing was 16 he married “Rukmani” the sister of hemabhai nagarseth. As
after some time rukmani lost her eye sight and died through a illness.
•After the death of rukmani SETH marries the sister of rukmani “PRASANNA” but again
she died in very short span.
•As in between her mother “SURAJBA” felt vey unhappy that he will married third time.
•As this time when he was travelling in saurashtra he saw a girl 13 year old who was
plastering the walls f her hut with cow dung. As she was very beautiful SETH was very
fascinated towards her. After all formalities he married her and her name was
“HARKUVARBA”.
•As unfortunately SETH HUTHEESING died at age 49 . After his death her wife harkuvarba
handle the situation of the house and take care of all.
•The projects which where pending harkuvarba has taken up and completed as she was very
much kind towards his husband.
•As on maha sudi panchami in vikram samvat 1903 (c.e.1847) it turned out to be the historic
event and the Hutheesing temple was completed and people where attending the function
of PRAN PARTHISHTA.The Pratishtha (consecration) of the temple was conducted by
Shantisagar Suri, a famous saint.The festivities were attended by as many as 400,000
people.
