Introduction:

• Our focus today is on Hebrews 2:1-4.
• What are some reasons behind this
  encouragement.
• What things can cause us to drift away.
• How can we avoid drifting away.
The Real Danger of Drifting
• It is possible for us to drift away from our
  salvation!
• One can “neglect” our great salvation.
  Heb. 2:3
  – One can fall away where it becomes
impossible to renew them to repentance.
    Heb. 6:4-6; 10:26-27
The Dignity of the One Through
    Whom God Has Spoken
• God now speaks to us through His Son.
  Heb. 1:1-2
• We note that God spoke through angels…
  – Hebrews 2:2 His word proved steadfast and
    every transgression and disobedience
    received a just reward.
  – How much more, then, when He speaks to us
  through His Son!
Dare we neglect the Word spoken by Jesus?
The Confirmation Given This
          Revelation
• The word spoken by God’s Son was also
confirmed by His apostles. Heb. 2:3
  – By those who were eyewitnesses.
    Acts 10:39-41; 2 Peter 1:16
  – This word was confirmed even more! Heb 2:4
     • By God Himself through miracles and
       signs. Jn. 10:37-38
     • By the Holy Spirit… 1 Cor. 12:7-11
What We Lose If We Drift Away
• We lose so great a salvation. V.3
• It offers:
  – Forgiveness of sins. Eph. 1:3, 7
  – Transformation of character by providing power
    over sin. John 8:32
  – Assurance of God’s presence. Heb. 13:5
  – A clear and peaceful conscience. Heb. 10:22
  – Glorious hope for eternity. Eph. 1:18; 1Jn. 2:25
• Dare we lose all this through neglect?!
Currents That Can Cause Us To
          “Drift Away”
• The Currents of…
  – Time: Some wear out and become weary,
lose their sense of fervor and devotion.
    Galatians 6:9; Revelation 2:4
  – Familiarity: Being familiar with the Truth, it
may seem common and lose its sense of
    specialness to us. Revelation 2:4
  – Society: The tides of modern opinion may
easily induce us to go “their way,” rather than
    God’s way! 1 Tim. 1:4; 1 Corinthians 15:33;
    2 Corinthians 11:2-3
Currents That Can Cause Us To
          “Drift Away”
• The Currents of…
  – The Flesh: Our warfare not only without, but
    also within. 1 Peter 2:11
      • Our flesh constantly fights against our
souls, and against the Spirit who desires
that we follow Him. Galatians 5:16-17
  – Daily Concerns: A constant pressure of daily
cares, anxieties, duties, etc., can distract us
from the proper focus. Luke 8:14; 21:34
The Key To Prevent This Drifting!
• We “MUST give the more earnest heed”!
• Like in a boat corrections can be made on
  your voyage to prevent shipwreck.
• So it is with your salvation.
  – We must be diligent to the task at hand.
    2 Peter. 1:5, 10
  – There is no place to be half-hearted about
    this! Philippians 3:12-15
  – Today we need to give a more earnest heed
than those before were giving! Luke 12:48
We Must Give Such Heed To
  The Things We Have Heard
• This refers to what Jesus has given us today.
The gospel of Christ in all aspects.
• How can we do this?
  – Follow the good example of the Berean brethren.
Listen and follow up… Acts 17:11
     • Receive the Word with all readiness!
     • Search the scriptures daily!
     • Use prayerful devotion to God. Psalm 119:18
     • Conclude with a prayerful desire to please
       God. Psalm 119:10-11
