Medical students’ approaches to learning before and after the cardiology prob...Eugenia Savvidou
Background: Recent literature reports inconsistent findings concerning the effect of the problem based
learning (PBL) on medical students’ approaches to learning. However, there is a lack of studies focused on
the comparison of a pre-clinical traditional teaching context to a post clinical PBL context. Furthermore, no
study has focused on approaches to learning reported by students with different pace of study and academic
qualifications before and after the experience of a PBL curriculum. Objectives: The present study focuses on
differences in approaches to learning reported by students of a Greek medical school before and after their
clinical practice in cardiology employing a PBL curriculum. The effect of the PBL clinical practice on students’
approaches to learning was explored for the total study group, as well as for students with different study pace
and with and without a previous degree in a subject relevant to medicine. Methods: The sample consists of
109 5th-year students. The approaches to learning were explored by the Finnish version of the Approaches to
Learning and Studying Inventory (ALSI). Results: Students in all groups reported higher scores in organized
study and lower scores in the surface approach after the clinical practice compared with their scores prior
to their practice. The deep approach was slightly increased in all groups after the clinical practice. The study
indicated good psychometric properties of the questionnaire. Conclusion: The PBL clinical practice seems to be
of benefit for all the groups of students concerning their approaches to learning (post-clinical scores). Curriculum
planners are suggested to work toward the PBL clinical training to be early integrated in the curriculum

In the past twenty five years, I have held numerous positions in front line management in the
manufacturing industry. Each plant I have managed has become the best in Australia due my
dedication to continuous improvement, raising standards through lean demand planning, high safety
standards, and changing culture for efficiency and proactivity.
I worked for Arrium 25 years, a self insured, Top 100 Australian, ASX listed international mining
and Materials Company. While at Arrium, I held numerous management roles, ranging from
production supervisor to operations manager. I consistently delivered results not previously achieved
and developed solutions to ensure these results were continuously improved upon. I developed
numerous policies that went national at Arrium, among which included policies for safety excellence.
As a result, I won the Arrium Safety Excellence Award, which served as the national standard for all
divisions, nationally.
My most recent position within Arrium was located at Gold Coast, the largest Steel Service Centre
in Queensland. During this appointment, I was responsible for a multi-million dollar annual budget,
3 factories, 40 staff, contractors, and 2 rolling shifts. I am passionate about delivering operational
excellence and adhering to the companies KPI’s to succeed in a demanding and challenging
environment.
Currently, I am the Plant Manager for Elgas. I am responsible for the day-to-day operation of the
Elgas Pty Ltd Swap’N’Go and residential gas supply. I manage two major hazard facilities in Lytton
and Pinkenba. The Lytton Swap & Go is currently the largest BBQ cylinder provider in Australia,
and the major supplier to the Queensland state and northern New South Wales. I am responsible for
managing this high volume, double-shifted operation.
In the last 12 months, Elgas acquired the opposition (Kleen Heat), which resulted in a three-fold
volume increase. As a result of my hands-on, proactive, and culture changing management style,
each month I exceeded performance targets and budget requirements. I was tasked with learning the
intricacies of the gas industry after coming from the steel industry. As a result of my diligence and
proficiencies in lean demand planning, mentoring staff, and implementing efficient standards, I have
been invited to other depots to give feedback and support to help them meet the high standards
achieved at the two depots I manage. I also received a national award, and my performances have
been used to highlight the excellence in management at Elgas national presentations and GM
meetings. Elgas is now using my depots as the standard for all Australian and New Zealand Elgas
Depots.
I am passionate about changing standards and culture to ensure employee wellbeing, a safe operating
environment, while meeting business KPI targets, budgets, and providing customers high quality
service. To ensure the highest performances, I emphasise lean demand planning, high training
standards, employee empowerment, and staff accountability. I lead by example, and engage with the
staff to create a positive and productive attitude, and proactive working environment for collective
success.
