There was this heart doctor who was making his

hospital rounds with him together with some
student interns. Visiting the room of a lady patient,
the esteemed heart doctor looked at the chart and
announced to his students, “Here is a classic case
of TS,” and then left the room.
By “TS” the good doctor meant, “tricuspid
stenosis,” which is far from life threatening from a
medical point of view.
But the woman, who heard the diagnosis,
interpreted TS as “Terminal Situation.” As soon as
the heart doctor left she thought, “Terminal! I’m
dying! Oh no!”

her pulse elevated, her previously clear
lungs filling up with fluid.” When they
tried to reassure her that her problem
was a minor one, she would not listen.
The “distinguished doctor” had declared
her a “Terminal Situation.” By nightfall

THE STORY OF
NICK – the
worrier

Nick got accidentally locked…
in a refrigerator‐boxcar. 
Nick assumed that the 
temperature inside was 
a freezing 0°C. He 
started shivering and 
thought to himself, “I'll
freeze to death if I
don’t get out of
here.”

Armstrong was “taken aback” and his mother
was trembling.

“from The Mind of Healing to the Heart of
Healing”

As I gathered my Interns for their weekly
teaching rounds, I hesitated for a moment as to
what to teach them that afternoon. For earlier I
had a sad encounter with a Resident who
commented on one of my patients with
Leukemia. I asked him how the patient was and
he flatly answered, "nothing we can do, SHE
WILL DIE SOON".

Although I felt sad for the patient, I felt
sadder for the Resident Physician.

I wondered ... how could someone just lose
hope for a patient?

Facing my interns, I told them about this
incident. I began to tell them that although
doctors think they can do it all, they really
can't. I told them that not all healing is in the
textbooks.

The diagnosis and the treatment--these may
be very important to patient care but the
greatest part of healing I believe, is the
patient having the hope to live, the hope for
healing… Like when:

- he patient is encouraged to move on
T
despite the odds.
- Encouraged to eat even when it is difficult
to do so. - The patient being loved during the
ordeal and even when everything is going
really bad, that there are people praying for
them to get through that ordeal.

That afternoon, we did not study
anything about the presentation of
diseases, the diagnosis of diseases nor
the management of diseases.
We studied how to HELP our patients.
We thought of ways to give Hope, to
Encourage, to Love and to Pray.
As an ending exercise, I asked them to
draw (using crayons and a bond paper)
something they think would encourage
our patient (Her name is Lala),
something that would give her hope.
They did!

The next day, I eagerly gave their
drawings to Lala. She had this wide
smile when she received it. Still in pain
because of her Leukemia, she still
managed to say a soft "Thank you".
The following day, when I made my
rounds, the pictures were on the wall
and she was seated when she greeted
me. She was discharged 2 days later,
(NOTE: SHE DIDN'T PASS ON!)

2 weeks later, she sent me a card for
that gesture of hope. Her fight against
her cancer is still not over but with her
renewed hope and strength, and with
God's favor, I know she will be alright.

From that time, every group of interns
that rotated under me, I lectured on The
Heart of Healing hoping to inspire them
to continue giving HELP to patients
under their care.

According to an article titled God Power:
This just in – religion and spirituality work
by John McManamy:

There are about 1,200 studies on
“the healing power of faith and
the health effects of spirituality.”



He cites the work of Dr Harold Koenig,
founder of the Center for the Study of
Religion/Spirituality at Duke University.

These studies where Dr Koenig was
personally involved include the following
cases.



Lowered Risk of Hypertension
A 1998 study of nearly 4,000 people aged 65
years and older which found the risk of
diastolic hypertension 40 percent lower
among people who attended religious services
at least once a week and prayed or studied the
Bible at least daily.



Lowered Risk of
Age-related Diseases
A 1997 study of more than 1,700 older adults from
North Carolina which found that persons who
attended church at least once a week were only
half as likely as non-attenders to have elevated
levels of interleukin-6, an immune system protein
involved in a wide variety of age-related diseases.



Faster Recovery from Depression
A 1998 study of 87 depressed older adults
which found those who recovered from
depression the fastest corresponded to
the extent of their religious belief.



Rheumatoid Arthritis patients
relieved of pain and swelling
after prayer sessions
This study was conducted by Dr. Dale Matthews,
associate professor of medicine, Georgetown
University School of Medicine,
Washington, D.C. The study abided by the
standards and protocol established by the
American College of Rheumatology.


Reduced Hospital Days
A study of 542 patients aged 60 or older
admitted to Duke University Medical Center
which found those who attended religious
services weekly or more reduced hospital
stays by more than half.



Reduced Hospital Days
People with no religious affiliation spent an
average of 25 days in the hospital compared to
11 days for patients affiliated with some
religious denomination. Patients who attended
religious services weekly or more also were 43
percent less likely to have been hospitalized
in the previous year.


Higher Success Rate in Surgery
A 1995 study of 232 patients at Dartmouth
Medical School which found that elderly heart
patients were 14 times less likely to die
following surgery if they found strength and
comfort in their religious faith and remained
socially involved.



Spirituality and Healing in
Medicine seminar at Harvard
University confirms that
“prayer... could have astounding
therapeutic effects.”



Dr Herbert Benson, a Harvard Medical School
cardiologist and founder of the Mind-Body
Institute at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital, was, in
his own words, “not a religious person.”
But study after study showed him
that prayer is good for his patients.


I used to be skeptical about these stories
and testimonies of healing by prayer — even after I
became a Christian. Some of these stories were just
too, well, “miraculous.”
And then I became a participant and
witness myself... I saw my wife
healed.
