This document summarizes 5 examples of racism and imperialism from the novel "Heart of Darkness" in 3-sentence passages. The examples describe the native people in inhuman and inferior terms, such as comparing them to animals or saying their language sounds non-human. One passage discusses how Europeans saw themselves as supernatural beings to the natives. The last summary states that while the ideas behind imperialism may sound appealing, the actual practice of conquering other lands involves taking them from people with different skin or noses.

No poet has observed animals more accurately than Ted Hughes has done. His depiction of the animals observed is remarkable, vivid, startling, and truthful. He relates that animal to other creatures and also to human experiences and human concepts; represents the typical stresses and contradiction of human nature and also of the Nature.
Postcolonialism in Joseph Conrad's 'Heart Of Darkness'DivyaSheta
Keith Booker states that “the book deals with issues such as imperialism, capitalism, race, and gender that were very much at the forefront of the turn-of-the-century European mind. Conrad’s ambivalent treatment of these issues is extremely representative of the way they were treated in any number of European discourses of the time”
Deed analysis of the novella's quest for absolute truth, knowledge and reality.
Analysis of of the construction of binaries and construction of the other.
A very useful presentation for the students and faculty as well.
Since its publication, Heart of Darkness has fascinated readers and critics, almost all of whom regard the novel as significant because of its use of ambiguity and (in Conrad's own words) "foggishness" to dramatize Marlow's perceptions of the horrors he encounters.
The presentation is not a mere creation of the author but it is based on various sources and purely designed to assist students in their examination. Quality of this presentation cannot be compared with the original text and genuine criticism of the literature. Students are advised to prefer the original texts for better results.
My Presentations on Overview of Culture and Anarchy written by Mathew Arnold.Culture and anarchy is a notorious philosophical work written by the celebrated Victorian poet and critic Mathew Arnold. This essay was first published in ‘Cornhill Magazine’ during 1867’-68.
Samuel Beckett's 'Waiting for Godot' belongs to the tradition of the Theatre of Absurd. It is unconventional in not depicting any dramatic conflicts. In the play, practically nothing happens, no development is to be found, there is no beginning and no end.

1. HEART OF DARKNESS
RACISM AND IMPERIALISM
EXAMPLES
Carmina Casas H
Rebeca LópezYañez E
Andrea Dorador
2. Chapter 2
• “She carried her head high; her hair was done in
the shape of a helmet; she had brass leggings to
the knee, brass wire gauntlets to the elbow, a
crimson spot on her tawny cheek, innumerable
necklaces of glass beads on her neck; bizarre
things, charms, gifts of witch-men, that hung
about her, glittered and trembled at every step.
[…] She was savage and superb, wild-eyed and
magnificent; there was something ominous and
stately in her deliberate progress.”
3. Number ONE
• This part is when Kurtz mistress appears from
the jungle and stares at the boat and makes a
sign for the other natives to leave. Is the first
time Marlow sees the Princess
• Kurtz’s mistress is described as a savage, this is
an example of racism.
4. Chapter 2 page 4
• “He was an improved specimen; he could fire
up a vertical boiler. He was there below
me, and, upon my word, to look at him was as
edifying as seeing a dog in a parody of
breeches and a feather hat, walking on his
hind-legs.”
5. Number TWO
• In this passage Marlow is describing a native.
• This is another example of racism because
Marlow is comparing the native with a dog
wearing feathers. Describing him as an animal.
6. Chapter 2 pg 13
• "He [Kurtz] began with the argument that we
whites, from the point of development we had
arrived at, 'must necessarily appear to them
[savages] in the nature of supernatural beings
- we approach them with the might of a
deity,’”
7. Number THREE
• This passage describes Kurtz’s idea of what
natives saw in the Europeans.
• Example of Imperialism and racism because it
is describing how Europeans are superior to
Africans. And should help them develop.
8. Chapter 3 pg 18
• "In front of the first rank, along the river, three
men, plastered with bright red earth from head
to foot, strutted to and fro restlessly. When we
came abreast again, they faced the river, stamped
their feet, nodded their horned heads, swayed
their scarlet bodies;[…] they shouted periodically
together strings of amazing words that
resembled no sounds of human language; and
the deep murmurs of the crowd, interrupted
suddenly, were like the responses of some
satanic litany."
9. Number FOUR
• In this passage Marlow is describing the
natives “savage” language.
• Example of racism. It is describing their
language as non-human noises and as a
satanic litany.
10. Chapter 1 pg 3
“...The conquest of the earth, which mostly means
taking it away from people with different colored skin
or flatter noses, is not a pretty thing when you think
about it. The only good thing about it is the idea
behind it. Not some pretty words you can use to
describe it, but a real and powerful idea that men will
unselfishly sacrifice themselves for—something that
men will bow down to and worship. . .”
11. Number FIVE
• In this passage Marlow is talking about
Imperialism. About how when you take a deep
look into it it is not a positive thing.
12. Conclusion
• In Heart of Darkness there are some examples
of racism because, before, there was the idea
of European superiority. There refers to
Africans as
animals, slaves, criminals, things, etc.
