This document contains examples from Joseph Conrad's novel "The Heart of Darkness" that illustrate themes of racism and imperialism. Several students provided short passages from the book highlighting instances of the Europeans referring to Africans as savages or enemies in order to assert their dominance and claim over the land. One example showed a white man punishing his slave in front of others to demonstrate his power over black men. The examples portrayed the racist and imperialist attitudes that were prevalent during the time period when Europeans were colonizing Africa.
