Heart cancer can develop in any part of the heart, with angiosarcomas being the most common type in adults. The cause of heart cancer is unknown but involves changes in heart cells that lead to uncontrolled growth. Initial symptoms of heart cancer may be vague like chest pain or pressure, but can worsen to include bluish skin, confusion, difficulty breathing, or an irregular heartbeat. While the outlook is serious if left untreated, complementary therapies like acupuncture, massage, and yoga may help support people undergoing treatment for heart cancer.

2. What is heart cancer?
 Heart cancers can develop from any part of
the heart. In adults, the most common heart
cancers are angiosarcomas, which tend to
develop in the right upper chamber of the
heart (atrium). Angiosarcomas originate from
cells that form the lining of blood vessels.
When these cells become cancerous, they
multiply and create irregular blood vessel-
like masses that can bulge into the atrium
and spread to adjacent structures.

3. What causes heart cancer?
?
 The cause of heart cancer is not known. As
with any cancer, changes occur inside the
cells, which lead to alteration of their
function and uncontrollable growth.These
types of changes can occur in any of the cells
of the heart.

4. What are the symptoms of heart
cancer?
Initially, heart cancer may not have any symptoms.When
symptoms develop, they often resemble those of heart
disease.The symptoms of heart cancer can occur suddenly.
Common symptoms of heart cancer include:
 Chest pain or pressure
 Cough, which may be productive of a pink, frothy sputum
 Fatigue
 Fever
 Irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia)
 Shortness of breath, which may be worsened by lying flat
 Swelling in the feet and ankles
 Unexpected weight gain or loss
 Weakness (loss of strength)
 Widening and thickening of the fingertips (clubbing)

5. Serious symptoms that might indicate a life-
threatening condition
In some cases, heart cancer can be life threatening. Seek immediate
medical care (call 103) if you, or someone you are with, have any of these
life-threatening symptoms including:
 Bluish coloration of the lips or fingernails
 Change in level of consciousness or alertness, such as passing out or
unresponsiveness
 Change in mental status or sudden behavior change, such as confusion,
delirium, lethargy, hallucinations and delusions
 Chest pain, chest tightness, chest pressure, palpitations, irregular heart
rhythm
 Not producing any urine, or an infant who does not produce the usual
amount of wet diapers
 Paralysis or inability to move a body part
 Rapid heart rate (tachycardia)
 Respiratory or breathing problems, such as shortness of breath, difficulty
breathing, labored breathing, wheezing, not breathing, choking

6. Complementary treatments
Some complementary treatments may help some
people to better deal with heart cancer and its
treatments.These treatments, sometimes referred
to as alternative therapies, are used in conjunction
with traditional medical treatments.
Complementary treatments are not meant to
substitute for full medical care.
Complementary treatments may include:
 Acupuncture
 Massage therapy
 Yoga
