American Thoracic Society Policy Statement
Shared decision-making is a central component of patient-centered
care in the intensive care unit (ICU) (1–4); however, there remains
confusion about what shared decision-making is and when
shared decision-making ought to be used. Further, failure to
employ appropriate decision-making techniques can lead to
significant problems. For example, if clinicians leave decisions
largely to the discretion of surrogates without providing adequate
support, surrogates may struggle to make patient-centered
decisions and may experience psychological distress (5).
Conversely, if clinicians make treatment decisions without
attempting to understand the patient’s values, goals, and
preferences, decisions will likely be predominantly based on the
clinicians’ values, rather than the patient’s, and patients or
surrogates may feel they have been unfairly excluded from
decision-making (1, 2). Finding the right balance is therefore
essential. To clarify these issues and provide guidance, the
American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) and
American Thoracic Society (ATS) recently released a policy
statement that provides a definition of shared decision-making
in the ICU environment, clarification regarding the range of
appropriate models for decision-making in the ICU, a set of skills
to help clinicians create genuine partnerships in decision-making
with patients/surrogates, and ethical analysis supporting the
findings (6).
To develop a unified policy statement, the Ethics Committee of
the ACCM and the Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee of the
ATS convened a writing group composed of members of these
committees. The writing group reviewed pertinent literature
published in a broad array of journals, including those with a focus
in medicine, surgery, critical care, pediatrics, and bioethics, and
discussed findings with the full ACCM and ATS ethics committees
throughout the writing process. Recommendations were generated
after review of empirical research and normative analyses published
in peer-reviewed journals. The policy statement was reviewed,
edited, and approved by consensus of the full Ethics Committee
of the ACCM and the full Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee
of the ATS. The statement was subsequently reviewed and approved
by the ATS, ACCM, and Society of Critical Care Medicine leadership,
through the organizations’ standard review and approval processes.
ACCM and ATS endorse the following definition: Shared
decision-making is a collaborative process that allows patients, or
their surrogates, and clinicians to make health care decisions
together, taking into account the best scientific evidence
available, as well as the patient’s values, goals, and preferences.

New practice approaches
An experience with new technology and better ways of dealing with burn cases, treatment is quite fast and easy! Unlike the traditional way of airway maintenance, the new way that follows the ATLS guidelines enables the nurse to have a definitive airway maintenance as well as ventilation monitoring.
Extraprofessional collaboration
The burn unit required a great deal of collaboration between different medical practitioners in order to achieve quick recovery and optimum treatment results. With the airway and c-spine protection, monitoring the heart rate and blood pressure would require different physicians to acquire optimum results.

With the Airway with C-spine Protection, different procedures and systems collaborate together to produce the best treatment results. Assessment of breathing, circulation, disability and exposure worked well with the clinical system each stage was important in contributing to the greater good.

essential. To clarify these issues and provide guidance, the
American College of Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) and
American Thoracic Society (ATS) recently released a policy
statement that provides a definition of shared decision-making
in the ICU environment, clarification regarding the range of
appropriate models for decision-making in the ICU, a set of skills
to help clinicians create genuine partnerships in decision-making
with patients/surrogates, and ethical analysis supporting the
findings (6).
To develop a unified policy statement, the Ethics Committee of
the ACCM and the Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee of the
ATS convened a writing group composed of members of these
committees. The writing group reviewed pertinent literature
published in a broad array of journals, including those with a focus
in medicine, surgery, critical care, pediatrics, and bioethics, and
discussed findings with the full ACCM and ATS ethics committees
throughout the writing process. Recommendations were generated
after review of empirical research and normative analyses published
in peer-reviewed journals. The policy statement was reviewed,
edited, and approved by consensus of the full Ethics Committee
of the ACCM and the full Ethics and Conflict of Interest Committee
of the ATS. The statement was subsequently reviewed and approved
by the ATS, ACCM, and Society of Critical Care Medicine leadership,
through the organizations’ standard review and approval processes.
ACCM and ATS endorse the following definition: Shared
decision-making is a collaborative process that allows patients, or
their surrogates, and clinicians to make health care decisions
together, taking into account the best scientific evidence
available, as well as the patient’s values, goals, and preferences.

This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or

Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied

We, as health care professionals, do not fulfill our due diligence when leaving the patient uninformed of decisions that are to be made that may or may not be life altering. According to (Hoffmann et al., 2014), both shared decision making, and evidence-based practice cannot function without one another and are essential to each other existence. Luckily, I have not had to be a part of an incident involving leaving the patient out of the loop and not effectively communicating with them. Our hospital purposely enforces strict rounding that brings together the physician, nurse, charge nurse, pharmacist and the patient and family members. One example of a shared decision-making event was when a patient had come in for some mild chest pain and ended up having a significant blockage seen by a heart catheterization. After this occurred the entire healthcare team rounded on the patient and discussed the next few steps in his plan of care. The doctors discussed that it would be extremely beneficial to perform open heart surgery, all the while taking time for the patient to understand the risks and allowing them to decide based upon all the factual knowledge available. Something as simple as this not only encourages evidence-based practice but also allows the patient to ask questions and feel like a part of this care plan. According to (Kon et al., 2016), health care professionals needs to include three imperative parts which are information discussion, careful consideration and making a decision. Our treatment team provided these three essentials when discussing the need for an open-heart surgery. This was even discussed when the patient was initially brought into the hospital prior to a heart catheterization. The health aid I chose that was most closely related to this patients chief complain was the coronary artery disease: Should I have an angioplasty for stable angina. This patient did have stable angina and had a heart cath performed, but there were too many occlusions to perform an angioplasty/stent. This decision aid would have been appropriate for this patient before the heart cath by showing the patient his options and the benefits/risks of the procedure. Through the utilization of this decision aid or others that were used in the process of shared decision making, the patient was found to have significant blockages that required an open-heart surgery. This knowledge would have never been made aware to the staff and the patient, thus potentially saving this patients life. I would utilize this aid in my life if anyone I personally know would need to make a decision about getting an angioplasty as it completely lays out in detail what occurs during the
