Insulin secretion is stimulated by increased blood glucose and amino acid levels and gastrointestinal hormones. Glucagon increases blood glucose levels by stimulating the conversion of glycogen to glucose in the liver and muscles and gluconeogenesis. Somatostatin inhibits the secretion of both insulin and glucagon from the pancreatic islets.
Anatomy -Adrenal glands(Supra Renal)
The adrenal glands are located above the kidneys and are composed of an outer cortex and inner medulla. The cortex produces three types of hormones - glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoids, and sex hormones. Glucocorticoids such as cortisol help regulate metabolism and the stress response, while mineralocorticoids like aldosterone control water and electrolyte balance. The medulla secretes adrenaline and noradrenaline in response to sympathetic nervous system stimulation to initiate the fight-or-flight response. Both parts of the adrenal glands help maintain homeostasis during stress.
Anatomy - pituitary gland and hypothalamus
The pituitary gland and hypothalamus act as a unit to regulate other endocrine glands. The pituitary gland sits in the sphenoid bone below the hypothalamus and is attached by a stalk. It consists of the anterior and posterior pituitary lobes. The hypothalamus influences hormone release from both lobes through releasing and inhibiting hormones. The anterior pituitary secretes hormones that regulate growth, metabolism, and reproductive functions through feedback loops with target glands. The posterior pituitary stores and releases oxytocin and vasopressin secreted by the hypothalamus.
Anatomy - pineal gland or body
The pineal gland is a small reddish-brown gland located in the brain that secretes the hormone melatonin. Melatonin levels fluctuate throughout a 24-hour period, being highest at night and lowest during the day, and it is believed to influence circadian rhythms and inhibit sex organ growth before puberty. The pineal gland connects to the third ventricle and hypothalamus and tends to shrink after puberty.
