This document summarizes research on using reduced graphene oxide (RGO) as a barrier material for impermeable films and protective coatings. The researchers tested multilayer graphene films made by chemically reducing graphene oxide laminates with hydroiodic acid or ascorbic acid. They found:
1) The RGO films were highly impermeable to all gases, liquids, and chemicals tested, including aggressive acids like hydrofluoric acid.
2) RGO coatings as thin as 30 nm on PET films blocked detectable permeation of hydrogen and water, providing a better barrier than aluminum coatings of similar thickness.
3) Thicker RGO coatings over 100 nm were impermeable even to
