- MILG was set up in 2004 Imperial students / staff Provide structure to teaching / allow library staff across the medical campuses to collaborate in the support we give Part of the continuum, see medics at start of their career, hope to instil skills for their future careers. Membership: I chair Principle Library Assistants from each campus 1 x Senior Library Assistant representative Through this group we co-ordinate and run Start of term sessions for all new UG students in the Medical faculty - embedded in the curriculum (nearly 80 last Oct) Problem-based Learning means that students need to be Information Literate early in their course. Ref & Plag quizzes for Yr 1 & Yr3 medical students - now compulsory RefWorks teaching Advanced sessions for MSc and PhD students Ad-hoc 1-2-1 sessions for PhD students and academic staff
- Preparation Meet monthly but weekly during summer PowerPoint slides for sessions / Informs tutorials / lesson plans New technologies e.g. Personal Response Systems (PRS) Online IL modules : update Olivia / PILS / PILOT Train the trainer – update knowledge of resources / explore changes to resources – given by resource champions. External trainers voice coaching. Liaison I liaise with various academics to embed library sessions into the medical curriculum. E.g. PBL / Epidemiology in practice
- Online tutorials, delivered via the VLE Blackboard Started with Olivia about 5 years ago – designed to provide additional support to library sessions. Aimed at Undergraduates. Realised need for support at all levels of study / research so have created PILS / PILOT PILOT created with Roberts money specifically for post-docs. Hope to develop a PILOT Academic DEMO Pilot – show unit 4 Currently only available to those with College username and password

- On October 1st 2007 the Imperial College Healthcare Trust was created Merged St Mary’s NHS Trust and Hammersmith Hospitals NHS Trust, making it the largest Trust in the country. Resulted in the establishment of the UK’s first Academic Health and Science Centre (AHSC), forming a unique collaboration between higher education and the NHS. Issues: Publishers still see Imperial and the NHS Trust as 2 separate bodies Meeting new expectations – we don’t have increased staffing Providing the right kind of user training. Flexible enough to support changing needs The main challenge will be to identify the role of Library services and how it will evolve to best support this new and unique partnership, and how it will best serve in light of the new recommendations of the recent Hill report.
- Translational medicine Becoming more prevalent How we support translational research MSc Move from training to supporting NHS departments are asking more & more for library staff to be involved in their research team. Question of capacity - staffing Comes back to things like PILS/PILOT – to allow people to be as self-sufficient as possible. Will never have the capacity to do all the work people would like us to do but we’re working on it. Very aware of Lord Darzi’s call for improving quality of care & for easy access for NHS staff to info about high quality care. We can help support the clinicians & academics who’s work will help improve the quality of care
