Liberal Education in the Emerging Digital EcosystemRebecca Davis
How does the emerging digital environment shape teaching and learning in the 21st century? What skills, abilities, and habits of mind do today’s graduates need for their careers and to solve complex problems in this context? The future of liberal education depends upon an integrative vision of digitally-informed learning that is not merely digital content delivery but rather is reshaped in the same ways that digital learning has already fundamentally changed our culture. This talk will present a vision for implementing liberal education in the emerging digital ecosystem through a curriculum that scaffolds digital engagement from introductory to capstone level courses.

Webinar - Libraries As Innovation Hubs - 2017-05-31TechSoup
Public libraries are hubs for innovation and community engagement. Library workers must listen closely to community needs to design programs and services responsive to continuous changes in technology and fluctuations in funding. This free webinar showcases two examples of collaborative design events used in public libraries to generate ideas, build community, and solve problems.
Chris Kyauk talks about the Alameda County Library’s Innovation Fest, a collaborative team challenge for public library staff. The Innovation Fest was designed to help library staff become more comfortable with design processes and risk taking to better create solutions to serve library patrons.
Sarah Washburn shares Caravan Studio’s process for community centered design to develop technology solutions that solve real problems. This process has been successfully applied to projects with libraries as a key strategic collaborator, most recently in Indianapolis (IN).

Webinar: Measuring Program Outcomes: A Toolkit for Small Libraries-2016-05-04TechSoup
Public libraries offer vital services to the community that provide opportunities for education, lifelong learning, literacy, digital skills, workforce development, and youth development. In order to gain and retain funding, libraries should have data to support their stories of success and positive impact on the lives of community members. Outcome measurement is a process which provides libraries with data that can be used for advocacy, programming decisions, and planning, so the library can communicate clearly and make improvements to programs and services. Outcome measurement can be a big undertaking, but a new toolkit has been developed to help libraries easily and effectively survey patrons to learn the true impact of their programs.
This free webinar provides an overview of outcome measurement from Project Outcome, a new program from the Public Library Association, that provides simple tools so libraries can measure programs across seven common service areas.

Webinar - Digital Skills for Older Adults: Teaching Technology in Public Libr...TechSoup
Visit http://www.techsoup.org for donated technology for nonprofits and libraries!
Does your library offer technology assistance to older adults? Do you teach computer classes for seniors? Are patrons bringing in tablets and other devices that have been given to them by grandchildren? Recent research from the Pew Institute shows that only 59% of older adults go online. New technologies can be difficult to learn, and older adults may not understand the benefits of using technology. But libraries can help older adults adopt technology in meaningful ways for communication, lifelong learning, and entertainment.
Join us for this free webinar to learn how your library can help older adults learn to use new technologies. You will hear from the St. Mary's County Library (Maryland), which is providing older adults with effective training and technology assistance. This library will share examples of successful programming, as well as tips for working with older adults. You will also learn about TechBoomers, a free website that offers technology training tutorials developed specifically for older adults. Come hear examples of how this site is being used by libraries to supplement programs and services, and to help increase staff’s confidence in being able to help patrons.
Lee Rainie, Director of the Pew Research Center Internet Project, runs through the seven questions libraries need to address as they consider future services and their role for their patrons and communities. He describes how project research about the changing role of technology in people’s lives affects the kinds of issues librarians need to address as they experience the disruptions of technology change.

Elevating Tactical DDD Patterns Through Object CalisthenicsDorra BARTAGUIZ
After immersing yourself in the blue book and its red counterpart, attending DDD-focused conferences, and applying tactical patterns, you're left with a crucial question: How do I ensure my design is effective? Tactical patterns within Domain-Driven Design (DDD) serve as guiding principles for creating clear and manageable domain models. However, achieving success with these patterns requires additional guidance. Interestingly, we've observed that a set of constraints initially designed for training purposes remarkably aligns with effective pattern implementation, offering a more ‘mechanical’ approach. Let's explore together how Object Calisthenics can elevate the design of your tactical DDD patterns, offering concrete help for those venturing into DDD for the first time!

Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.
A tale of scale & speed: How the US Navy is enabling software delivery from l...sonjaschweigert1
Rapid and secure feature delivery is a goal across every application team and every branch of the DoD. The Navy’s DevSecOps platform, Party Barge, has achieved:
- Reduction in onboarding time from 5 weeks to 1 day
- Improved developer experience and productivity through actionable findings and reduction of false positives
- Maintenance of superior security standards and inherent policy enforcement with Authorization to Operate (ATO)
Development teams can ship efficiently and ensure applications are cyber ready for Navy Authorizing Officials (AOs). In this webinar, Sigma Defense and Anchore will give attendees a look behind the scenes and demo secure pipeline automation and security artifacts that speed up application ATO and time to production.
We will cover:
- How to remove silos in DevSecOps
- How to build efficient development pipeline roles and component templates
- How to deliver security artifacts that matter for ATO’s (SBOMs, vulnerability reports, and policy evidence)
- How to streamline operations with automated policy checks on container images

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
