What is Harassment?
Harassment is the unwanted conduct of race, sexual
orientation etc. it has the purpose to affect others and
creating effective environment for the others
OR
It can be simply defined as any act which makes opposite
gender to feel uncomfortable
What is Workplace?
Workplace’ has been defined as:
“Place of work or the premises where an organization or
employer operates and includes building, factory, open area
or a larger geographical area where the activities of the
organization or of employer are carried out and including
any situation that is linked to official work or official activity
outside the office”
Types of Harassment?
o Bullying
o Sexual Harassment
o Racial harassment
o Harassment of religion
o Harassment of Disability
WHY DOES SEXUAL HARASSMENT TAKES PLACE
o Males take advantage of girls vulnerability, fear to tell parents and
career concerns of a girl
o Wrongdoer fearlessly continue with their immoral activities and
as a result many innocent women commit suicides
o Many women are also unaware of the laws which are made for
the protection of their life and liberty due to lack of education
and awareness. This is the major drawback which provokes the
harassers and oppressors to confidently do their lustful acts
without the fear of any legal consequences
Common Examples of Harassment
 Harassment by a male supervisor of a female
subordinate.
 Harassment by co-workers based on a “hostile
work environment
Harassment Behavior
 Mainly 3 types of behavior can be considered as
harassed behavior
 Verbal: offensive comments, inappropriate
comments about someone body, flirting etc
 Visual :elevator eyes(look upside to down),wrong
gestures
 Physical: unwanted touching, block movement,
patting,pinching etc.
Hostile Work Environment
 Hostile work environment leads to sexual
harassment
 Verbal, physical or visual forms of harassment, that are
sexual in nature and are unwelcomed, fall under the
category of Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment.
 A single, severe incident, such as a sexual assault, could
create a hostile environment. More commonly, a "hostile
environment" is created by a series of incidents
Effects
LAW against Harrasment
Pakistan Penal Code:
In March 2010, the government passed two
laws against sexual harassment in the workplace.
 The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act
 The Code of Criminal Procedure
Punishment of Harrasment
Section 509 of PPC defines punishment of harassment as
Imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of 500,000 rupees or both
Other sections of this law prevents:
 Obscene acts and songs
 Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty
 Assault or use of criminal force to woman and stripping her of her clothes

Steps to File a Complaint
Let the harasser know that his/her conduct is
unwanted and unwelcome.
Go to harasser’s supervisor and explain the
circumstances. Be sure to take with you documented
dates, times, and specific occurrences if you have
them
Work place Harassment Facts
 50 - 70% of women
 5 -10% of men sexual harassment in the work
place.
 Approximately 14,000 cases sexual harassment
 (NCSW) in May 2010 on the directive of Prime
Minister in Pakistan.
 NCSW reports
 Currently 13% of claims involve females filing
against men supervisors.
Women Employee Responsibilities
 Say “NO” clearly
 Document what happened
 Report the harassment
 Review your personnel file
 Use the grievance procedure at work
 Involve your Union.
 Fill a discrimination complaint with a Government
Agency.
 File a lawsuit
Conclusion
 Create a safe and sound environment for the people
 Eradication of all the indecent and offensive sexual exertions
 The felons and wrongdoers must not be pardoned.They must be
punished and penalized in such a way that it becomes an example and
warning for the other people
 The young and confident girls must be protected by the state from any
kind of harm or aggravation that would endanger and jeopardize their
careers, life, confidence and self-esteem.
 The infliction and misfortune that has already been caused should not
continue and shattered souls must be cured by building up a society
free from sexual frustration.

  • 3. What is Harassment? Harassment is the unwanted conduct of race, sexual orientation etc. it has the purpose to affect others and creating effective environment for the others OR It can be simply defined as any act which makes opposite gender to feel uncomfortable
  • 4. What is Workplace? Workplace’ has been defined as: “Place of work or the premises where an organization or employer operates and includes building, factory, open area or a larger geographical area where the activities of the organization or of employer are carried out and including any situation that is linked to official work or official activity outside the office”
  • 5. Types of Harassment? o Bullying o Sexual Harassment o Racial harassment o Harassment of religion o Harassment of Disability
  • 6. WHY DOES SEXUAL HARASSMENT TAKES PLACE o Males take advantage of girls vulnerability, fear to tell parents and career concerns of a girl o Wrongdoer fearlessly continue with their immoral activities and as a result many innocent women commit suicides o Many women are also unaware of the laws which are made for the protection of their life and liberty due to lack of education and awareness. This is the major drawback which provokes the harassers and oppressors to confidently do their lustful acts without the fear of any legal consequences
  • 7. Common Examples of Harassment  Harassment by a male supervisor of a female subordinate.  Harassment by co-workers based on a “hostile work environment
  • 8. Harassment Behavior  Mainly 3 types of behavior can be considered as harassed behavior  Verbal: offensive comments, inappropriate comments about someone body, flirting etc  Visual :elevator eyes(look upside to down),wrong gestures  Physical: unwanted touching, block movement, patting,pinching etc.

Hostile Work Environment  Hostile work environment leads to sexual harassment  Verbal, physical or visual forms of harassment, that are sexual in nature and are unwelcomed, fall under the category of Hostile Environment Sexual Harassment.  A single, severe incident, such as a sexual assault, could create a hostile environment. More commonly, a "hostile environment" is created by a series of incidents
  • 11. LAW against Harrasment Pakistan Penal Code: In March 2010, the government passed two laws against sexual harassment in the workplace.  The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act  The Code of Criminal Procedure
  • 12. Punishment of Harrasment Section 509 of PPC defines punishment of harassment as Imprisonment of up to three years or a fine of 500,000 rupees or both Other sections of this law prevents:  Obscene acts and songs  Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty  Assault or use of criminal force to woman and stripping her of her clothes
  • 13. STRATEGIES FOR THE PREVENTION OF HARASSMENT o Sexual Harassment Policy o Train employees o Anti-Harassment Campaigns o Laws Against Sexual Abuse

  • 21. Steps to File a Complaint Let the harasser know that his/her conduct is unwanted and unwelcome. Go to harasser’s supervisor and explain the circumstances. Be sure to take with you documented dates, times, and specific occurrences if you have them

Work place Harassment Facts  50 - 70% of women  5 -10% of men sexual harassment in the work place.  Approximately 14,000 cases sexual harassment  (NCSW) in May 2010 on the directive of Prime Minister in Pakistan.  NCSW reports  Currently 13% of claims involve females filing against men supervisors.
  • 23. Women Employee Responsibilities  Say “NO” clearly  Document what happened  Report the harassment  Review your personnel file  Use the grievance procedure at work  Involve your Union.  Fill a discrimination complaint with a Government Agency.  File a lawsuit
  • 24. Conclusion  Create a safe and sound environment for the people  Eradication of all the indecent and offensive sexual exertions  The felons and wrongdoers must not be pardoned.They must be punished and penalized in such a way that it becomes an example and warning for the other people  The young and confident girls must be protected by the state from any kind of harm or aggravation that would endanger and jeopardize their careers, life, confidence and self-esteem.  The infliction and misfortune that has already been caused should not continue and shattered souls must be cured by building up a society free from sexual frustration.
