Editor's Notes
Engage, entertain, enhance story and offer ‘experience’ is something that both writers and publishers hope to achieve through books. Certainly something I always aware of when writing my novels.
As an author of these chick lit books I always wanted to add more... Every book contained european destination, an art form and a musical theme – subtley woven into characters and story... But wanted readers to hear the classical music or see the degas paintings.
As Masters thesis, wrote 4th novel online. Fictional blog that i thought would be easy to cut and paste. Wanted to cast a wide net with story spread and embarked on a mission to do so. Horrendous!! Limited tech skills and resources was spending over 100 hours a week on this!!!
As a novice I learned that overkill was time consuming, a huge effort and a disappointing lesson. In trying to be everywhere, I was hosting some parties that nobody wanted to attend.
I realised that to harness the internet and ‘go digital’ meant to offer options,
but for any platform or option to work it had to be relevant!! To the genre of the book - (scifi, crime and thriller great for harnessing ‘e’, but romance and chick lit not so.. Goes back to the psychology and social behaviours of the readers – KEY!) and also relevance to the platform – to drag readers from one device to another is to encourage them being distracted. “you can’t take them to where you want them to go... so go where they are!!!”
The internet has opened the channels for conversation and in considering options for conversation surrounding ‘story’, you can see the huge potential for hosting those parties that nobody attends.
Breaking it down to ‘types’ of conversation makes it a little easier to focus on.
Until you’re left with the basic threads. But you STILL need to be acutely aware of your audience! Social behaviours and trends are vital in deciding how to harness ‘e’ and offer options.
And with mobile growing – the options widen further, to tell story ‘on the go’.
Some examples of books that have harnessed e – internet isnt a medium... It’s a platform!!
Good example is FREAK by Fremantle and MySpace. Scripted 13 week drama for teens., non linear, interactive and dynamic. You could JUST watch 2 weekly episodes (shot in HD) – but on MySpace – music site – budget problems meant music expensive and limited. Ask for music and put on freak! 10,000 songs sent.In SOAP are 3 levels of storyline.A = 3 month (predetermined) – NON INFLUENCEDB = weekly – audience participation here. Not to CHOOSE, but to come and help us (almost ARG gaming type idea) –ask people who live in area to come and help do something!C = episodic – not in main episode, just appeared in character profile. Lucy – party and need to dress EMO . so go on profile and post video – low grade video and ask for help.
So to harness ‘e’ is a huge opportunity in terms of both marketing, driving and enhancing story. For my PhD I’m writing my 5th novel as a transmedia story – which is challenging as it is a contemporary romantic comedy and hasn’t been done as transmedia yet.
