1. Make a plan and set goals
Create a list of areas where you want to start improving professionally. Set a timeframe for
accomplishing these goals.
2. Determine your unique value proposition
Determine what you offer that can solve the challenges your business or clients face. Write
a statement that summarizes how you bring value to the table.
3. Take new headshot photos
Whether you’ve taken a headshot before or not, consider paying a photographer to take
photos for you. You can use this photo on your social media channels, website and in any
publications you contribute to.
4. Update your resume
Most people don’t look at or concern themselves with their resume unless they’re applying
for a new job. Your resume should be a constantly updated and evolving document. Make
a plan to update your resume at least once a year -- around the time your evaluation is
completed.
5. Create a toolkit
If you don’t already have business cards, have them made up. Have your cover letter and
resume ready to go at any time. Create a portfolio of your work and be prepared to share
a link to where people can find you online.
6. Work on your LinkedIn profile
Creating a robust LinkedIn profile will make you attractive to recruiters and potential
clients. It will also help your Google search results.
7. Start building or beef up your social profiles
Focus on sites that will get you noticed. Voice your insights on Twitter or YouTube, share
your art/interests on Instagram, or post your ideas/content to Pinterest.
8. Create a free website or blog
Start a blog or personal website where you can host your portfolio and resume.
It can be a one-stop shop about you professionally or a blog where you share your ideas.
9. Take classes & learn new skills
Take advantage of free and affordably priced resources through websites like Lynda.com
and Skillshare. Or, use the library to take free tech classes or to teach yourself a new
language.
10. Sign up for email newsletters
Find websites or influencers you’re interested in and sign up for their email newsletters to
keep a constant stream of knowledge and tips in your inbox. Also, sign up for networking
sites and organizations so you can get out there and meet new people.
