 The fiber obtained from the goat has a special
luster due to its long, fine fibers, which are as thin
as 12 microns.
 In Kani weaving the design is formed by the
interlocking of different coloured threads as per
the design.

 Paper mache is one of the most beautiful handicrafts
of Kashmir
 The construction of paper mache products has two
essential processes which involves making of the
object and cleaning of forest pine Kaylier (one of the
pine variety).
 It is believed that the craft has traveled from Iran to
Kashsmir and was introduced by King Zainul Abidin.
Iranian name of the craft is Kari Qalamdane which
means a pen stand.
 Some of the items have pure silver or gold dust
sprinkled onto them to increase their beauty.
 Traditionally, wood based paper mache is coated with
a skinny stratum of stretched sheep skin which is well
fitted for colouring pigments

 Sozni (or suzani) embroidery is a style of embroidery
 Themotifs are created in satin stitch and are worked
identically on both sides of the cloth, but sometimes in
different colours (for example,the dominant colour
may be red on one side and blue on the other).
 This type of work/stitch is sometimes called
Dorukha.
 The most popular motifs consists of abstract
geometric designs,stylised flowers, as well as paisley
patterns.
 Sozni embroidery is, among others, used especially to
decorate shawls, and for the panels along the side of

 Walnut Wood Carving is a resultant of an indigenous
material and traditional carving techniques
characterized by high relief and undercut style of
carving of elaborate designs.
 Walnut Wood Carving is generally identified
asproducts made of walnut wood from Kashmir and
further embellished with hand carving of traditional
designs and motifs by traditional carvers (naqash)
from Kashmir.
 The Walnut trees are available at an altitude of 5500
to 7500 feet above sea level in semi hilly areas.
 The best quality walnut wood is obtained from
Shupiyan and Anantnag.

Hand Knotted Carpet
 The origin of hand knotted carpets locally known as"Kal baffi"
dates back to 15th century.
 It is said that Sultan Zain-ul-Abidin brought carpetweavers from
Persia and central Asia in to Kashmirto train the local inhabitants.
 Carpets from 200 knots to 900 knots/sq. inch both in wool & silk
yarn have attained such excellence that they rank amongst the
finest in the world.
 The loom used in Kashmir carpet weaving is composed of two
horizontal wooden beams between which the wrap threads are
stretched, one beam in front of the weaver and the second
behind the first.
 There are different types of knots and in Kashmir the Farsi baff
and the Persian system known as Sehna, orSinneh, knot is
originally used.
 Very simple tools are used to thread these knots, a wood or
Metal comb to push knots and weft tightly together and pair of
short scissors to cut the pile of the carpet to an even form once it
is finished.

 Khatamband is one of the oldest known forms of
woodcraft in Kashmir
 The treatment of the wood and related practices
including
craftsmanship is indigenous and unique to the
Kashmir region.
 The basic technique consists of small pieces of
wood inserted int grooved battens
 Each piece of wood is intricately carved and then
fitted together to form intricate geometrical
designs with a definite mathematical foundation.

Khatamband
 The battens and the pieces are alternatively fitted to
each other without using nails or glue in such a
manner that they can be dismantled again down to
the last component.
 The pieces are held together with the help of three
different types of joints which forms the basic
technique of Khatamband.
 There are more than 120 design with variations, some
of the well known designs are Mouje, Panch
 Muraba, Murba Badam, Shesh Gul, Char Gul, Hasht
Kan Chot, Chengis Kheini , Pohol Girdan and
Darwaza Girdh.
 One of the most intricate and time consuming design
is the Barah Murabba Which has around 3750 pieces
in ceiling of 10 ft x 10 ft size. The smallest piece can
