4. What is it?
1. The hamburger technique is a way of making
each and every paragraph you write FANTASTIC.
2. It helps you get the E, C and A criteria in to
your work
3. It is an easy and delicious way to improve
your writing.
5. The base is the main idea for
your paragraph. It is your
statement/opinion.
Example – Christopher is a
likeable character because he
knows a lot of interesting
information.
6. • The meat (or vegetarian
alternative!) is a quote, a big
tasty example of what your
base was saying.
For example, he knows Latin
phrases such as, “Entia non
sunt multiplicanda praeter
necessitatem,” (Haddon, 113).
7. • The bun is when you evaluate
what you have said.
This makes him a more interesting
character because he can teach us
things and he knows all sorts of
information that we may never
have thought of. Most teenagers
don’t know Latin, but Christopher
does. He is different and we find
this interesting.

9. Now you try – 15 mins
• Choose a reason why Christopher is (or isn’t) a
likeable character.
• Find a quote to support. (Haddon, 74)
• Analyze and evaluate. Why does that make him
likeable?
• Compare with a partner.
EXT – try another example or try and create a
paragraph saying why he isn’t likeable.
10. Feedback – 10 mins
