1. 1. Complete vocabulary activities on QUIZLET
2. Listen to/read Chapter 1 and summarise
- see the last slide (no peeking) for my version
(self-assessment)
3. Write a list of all of the characters mentioned (both
featured and referred to). What do you know about each
character so far? Are the any specific characteristics you
can already assign to each character? E.g. Mr Cartright
appears to be a strict teacher whom is experienced enough to be
quite weary about teaching a class like 4C. According to him, he has a
bad temper, favours sitting at his desk and is not the most patient of
people. Anne Fine refers to his size quite frequently – ‘vast bottom’;
‘huge rear end’; ‘vast bulk’; ‘Old Carthorse’.

2. What are Stereotypes?
• What sorts of stereotypes are present in the
chapter? Are there particular characters that fit
each of these stereotypes? Are any of these
stereotypes out-dated? What may be some
more recent ones? Have you ever been
stereotyped? If so, how did you respond?
Research different stereotypes and summarise
your findings.
C1: PSHE Task
3. What subjects are on offer at your new secondary
school? How do these subjects change for GCSEs?
Are there any ‘further education’ options
available (e.g. Sixth Form, feeder college)? How
might these subjects differ to what you are used
to at Thornhill?
Visit your new secondary school’s website for
research purposes or ask a sibling/relative/friend
if appropriate.

17. Summarise the chapter you’ve just read using a
minumum of 5 sentences and a maximum of 10.
Summarising text succinctly (i.e. brief but with all
the important details) is a very useful skill yet
tricky to master. It will support with sequencing
text and understanding order of events. PRO TIP:
Imagine it’s a Twitter post which limits your
characters (now a generous 280).
Chapter 1 Summary Task
Miss Huang’s version is on the
next page – no peeking!
18. • Key characters introduced
• 4C a notoriously ‘bad’ class (rejects)
• Students must choose topic for Science Project
• Mix up between Martin Simon and Simon Martin
• Flour Babies project is chosen
FYI – 194 characters (including spaces and punctuation!)
How did you do? Were you able to use fewer
sentences/words/characters yet retain all of the
important information? Did you include any details
that whilst interesting, were not really necessary to
understand the key events?
