Sarah is a 16-year-old girl living in 1960s Baltimore with her parents and older sister Shelley. While Sarah loves to dance, she has always lived in the shadow of her talented sister and feels overshadowed in her parents' comparisons. This has made Sarah a reserved person who prefers to stay out of the spotlight, though she still finds joy in dance as long as she can have fun through it.

1. Hairspray Backstory
My character is called Sarah and she is 16. She lives with her mother and father and older
sister Shelley. Sarah was born and brought up in Baltimore in America and grew up watching
The Corny Collins Show, her parents are quite racist however Sarah doesn’t see people skin
colour as a reason to divide.
She has a small but good group of friends and has never really been very “popular” but the
friends she has have been her friends all the way through her life and she wouldn’t change
that. Her favourite subjects in school are dance and media studies because she loves to
dance but prefers being on the other side of the dance like the filming or the
choreographing.
Sarah loves to dance and really wants to be successful however she is always compared to
her older sister by her mother and father because her older sister Shelley is an amazing
dancer and is famous and Sarah is always in her shadow.
This has made her a very reserved person because she is always put behind her sister so she
never want to be front and centre because she has accepted that she will never really be in
the spotlight so it has made her very shy and quiet. Sarah is more than happy to be on the
side though as long as she is having fun in the process.
