United States.
1. Cold war between these two countries
2. Monitoring upon each other regarding movement of army, testing of nuclear weapons and
other war related preparations and activities
3. Getting the benefits of civilian cause through images sent by satellites such as weather forecast
for example
4. Influencing member countries of their own group and attracting others to join them
5. Building supremacy upon each other as who wins the race or who reaches first on moon like
that.
6. To seize the initiative of gaining lead position in the world market of satellite related activities
and use of results
Due to following reasons, it so important during the Kennedy era and beyond for the U.S. to win
this race.
a. US economy was open and long lasting and it was promoting democracy which is liked by
maximum countries in modern era.
b. Intentions of Russia were more focused upon military use of satellite information. Though
USA also focused upon civilian and industrial uses of satellite information. In general, it was
good for the human kind though it also came at a cost.
c. More countries were aligned together with USA as Russia (USSR) crumbled later on in the
late 1980s and in beginning of 1990s.
