5. Our Philosophy of LIGHT
Light illuminates and makes visible. Light exposes
and governs what we see. Light highlights and
guides the eye. Light accentuates; it attracts; it
manipulates; it instructs.
But true experience of beauty always must be
functional, lest beauty be left without purpose.
And beauty needs to be sustained, so forward
thinking is pertinent. Only with those fulfilled can
we have beauty for its own sake – something
that makes people go “wow!” but also lets you sit
quietly in one corner in utter bliss and comfort.
Light does so many
things, yet it works best
behind the scenes.
Which is why lighting so
oft gets ignored. But
without light, visual
aesthetics is but an
illusion, for whatever
beauty the eye beholds,
it does so with light.

Light”

Philosophy from Leuch’TechTM
6. PIC1. The simplest of furniture can
be beautified by the right lighting
arrangement and design.
10. Lighting for
Aesthetics
The saying “beauty lies in the eye of
the beholder” is still arguable.
However, the fact that beauty
needs to be beheld by the eye is
certainly true. For that reason alone,
lighting plays a vital part in the
beauty of our beloved home.
PIC2. An entrance during
daytime; no artificial lighting
PIC3. The same entrance during
nighttime, using lights to
highlight the pillars and the
texture of the wooden door.
When building a home, there are
so many things to choose. The
designer sofa, the artwork, the
textures, the colors, the shapes
of the tables. We want
everything to be simply stunning.
And so we must aim to stun!
Wash a little light to the textures,
and you will add to its
dimensions (Pic5, right). Shoot a
beam up a tree, and you will see
it towering majestically in your
garden (Pic4, right). Or, simply
choose the right decorative
pendant, and it will speak for
itself (Pic6, right).
Let us transform your space. It
can differentiate a house from a
home, and make it truly a home
sweet home!

13. Perception &
Spatial
Manipulation
Good lighting manages both light
and shadow to create an
ambiance that fits the user’s needs.
This section explains how we can use
light and contrast to manipulate our
sense of space.
The human eye interprets places
that are brighter to mean that they
are of farther distance, That is why
highlighting certain areas of a
room can make it look taller or
wider.
In a narrow corridor, wallwashing
would give the perception that it is
more spacious than it actually is.
Such spatial manipulation with light
can give a room its added
grandeur, or homeliness. The Pic
(right) illustrates this theory in an
actual project. In the two pictures
of the exact setting, when the
ceiling is lit up, the room looks taller.
PIC9. (By ERCO) Different settings create different perception of space.
14. PIC10. The images on the left and the right presents the exact same
room photographed at the exact same scene. However, providing
more light directed at the ceiling creates the illusion that it is
higher.
15. Mood Setting
& the Science
Of Art
Different light color have differing side-
effects to the human physiology. For
consumers in Indonesia: Ever wonder why
some supermarkets like Carrefour uses very
white lights whilst others like Ranch Market
uses warmer color? Would you agree that
you would generally feel more energetic at
the former and more relaxed at the latter?
The scientific explanation for this
phenomenon is this: There is a tiny part of
the brain called the Suprachiasmatic
Nucleus (SCN) located just above our
optical nerves. This brain tissue captures
and interprets the light captured by our
retina, and tells the body to produce
certain hormones or chemicals accordingly.
This is called the body’s circadian rhythm,
or for simplicity’s sake, the body-clock. A
simplistic summary can be seen in PicX
below.
When designing lighting for your home, we
can recreate this body-clock by simulating
the color of sunlight that best supports our
activities.
For example, to achieve the highest level of
productivity, we can simulate the color of
sunlight at around 14:00-17:00, which
would be “bluish-white” at around 5500K
to 6500K.
Alternatively, to get a more relaxed
atmosphere, we can simulate the color of
sunlight before our body stops producing
melatonin (which makes us relaxed and
sleepy), which would be “yellowish” at
around 2700K-3000K.
The picture on the next page illustrates this
very point. Which atmosphere do you like
best? Or, mix and match to get a different
feel in the different rooms of your house.
Your choice.

17. Highlights – Workingwith
other Objects of Art
This artwork with light is created by
Allan D. Keller of DUA Lighting. It is a
perfect illustration of what light can
do to an object of art (or how light
can be part of the object of art).
The above artwork is a 3D
holographic image. The images
are taken from three different
viewpoints to illustrate what you
will actually see when you circle
around the object.
It gives the illusion that the object
follows us wherever we go.
Directed light interacts with the
texture to create shadow in the
right places to give it a three-
dimensional look.

artwork. Light makes it look alive!

PIC17. Uplights Used to
Transformda Wall into a Work
of Art by Accentuating its
Uneven Texture.
19. Comfort
Just as you should not look directly
into the sun, light works best when it
remains hidden. Brightness without
glare is one aspect of comfort.
Glare can be discomforting,
even disabling. The above
bedroom simply puts away the
lights from where the eyes can
see; thus creating a comfortable
ambiance but with enough
illuminance.
The light under the bed-side
table acts as a night-light – one
that provides light to the
pathways but hide it away from
the eyes.
Comfort is achieved by getting
the right amount of light without
the glaring effects.
PIC18. A Comfortable bedroom.
20. PIC19. Light is concealed, and
downlights are placed where the
eyesight would not view.
PIC20. Another case of concealed
lights. Even the pendant above the
dining table hides away its lamps.
24. Illumination
Levels
Now we will discuss the scientific and
mathematical aspect of lighting. The
rationale behind that is simple: The
eye needs different illuminance
levels for different tasks. This is
important for health, savings and
functionality.
The above artwork is a 3D
holographic image. The images
are taken from three different
viewpoints to illustrate what you
will actually see when you circle
around the object.
It gives the illusion that the object
follows us wherever we go.

texture to create shadow in the
right places to give it a three-
dimensional look.

calculations using RELUXTM Lighting Design Tool.
PIC22. The Actual Result of the Above Design.
28. Lighting
Quality
Sunlight gives you perfect color
rendering, at 100Ra. This is the
benchmark to which all other
light sources are measured.
Good Color Rendering will make
an object more radiant, more
vibrant & therefore more
beautiful. The above pictures
show exactly its dramatic
impact. In an exact setting,
PIC24 uses Compact Fluorescent
at Ra84 and PIC25 uses Low
Pressure Sodium at Ra28. The
result is self-explanatory.
PIC24. Road Lighting using 120Watt Clusterlite from
MEGAMANTM.. Color Rendering (Ra) 87. Notice how
clearly we can differentiate the colors.
PIC25. The same Road Lighting using 150Watt High
Pressure Sodium. Color Rendering (Ra) 40. Notice
how the color changes blue becoming white, red
becoming orange etc..
Mere brightness is not enough, we
must also look at the quality of the
light. The terminology we are looking
at is Color Rendering, measured in
Ra. This indicates the capability of
the light source to bring out the
actual color of the object.
29. PIC26. Energy-Saving yet Functional: Megaman® R9 LED
with CRI above 90 used to illuminate display of fruits. It
brings out its freshness; doesn’t attract flies (as it has no
UV); and it emits no heat thereby preserving the fruits
longer.
33. Sustainable Design
Coming forward to the
“Convenience” aspect of lighting
and lighting design; we talk about
Energy-saving, Maintenance, Ease
of use and replacement. It should
not only be beautiful, it should be
easy to use and maintain.
Beauty should not be inconvenient,
and convenience should not be
ugly! Getting the best of both world
is possible when you know the
appropriate technology to be used
for the particular application.
Both beauty and convenience
can be achieved with the proper
understanding of human behavior
and designing solutions around it.
LEDs in a chandelier takes away its
massive heat, bulb-replacement,
and energy problems. The right
downlighting can help reduce
energy consumption for as much
as 30%! Bringing luminaires further
down can mean less energy
needed – and all this is once for a
lifetime solution!
PIC27. Chandeliers. Beautiful, but often unused because of excessive heat, difficult bulb-
replacements, and the massive energy it consumes. Beauty should not be this inconvenient!
34. PIC28. (Top) One 6,5 * 7,5 * 3.1 (L*W*H) living room
lit up with only 5 downlights of 13 watts each. This
would normally be lit with at least 8 downlights at
18 watts each. With high LOR (Light Output Ratio)
downlights, considerable savings is achieved;
permanently.
PIC29. (Left) An office lit up with fluorescent
pendants. Bringing the light down means lower
wattage is needed. The use of indirect light sets the
mood and atmosphere.
35. Choosing the
Appropriate
Technology
With so much hype being tossed around
about the magic of LED, we may have
forgotten that what is too good to be
true probably isn’t. Marketing sometimes
does its job irresponsibly – creating a
demand that is unnecessary.
Many times, marketing tries to
sell something that is utterly
useless. Despite the many hypes
in the market about the
fabulousness of LED, the
technology is relatively new, and
no standards have yet been set
(at the time of writing) to
differentiate good LED products
from a bad one. And as you can
see in a later section (p. XX),
being uninformed can be very
costly indeed.
PIC30. Megaman® LED for general lighting is one
amongst many that offers multi-directional light.
Without it, the application of LED for general
lighting just doesn’t make any sense!
PIC31. Most LEDs in the market offer directional
light; rendering reflectors in downligts useless, and
hindering light from shining down from lamp
shades. This is inefficient but expensive!
36. PIC32. (Top) The above shop – believe it or not –
only uses Megaman®’s Compact Fluorescent Lamps.
Not a single LED, halogen or halogen lamps. When
the shop has no requirement for high contrasts,
Compact Fluorescent Lamps does the job superbly
with much lower investment cost.
PIC33. (Left) The shop uses a combination of
fluorescent lamps for its general lighting and LED
lamps from Megaman® for its focused lighting. It
gives the shop a higher-class look, and greater
contrast to guide the consumer eye.
37. Sensible energy-saving. This room, originally consumed over 3000 Wa
now uses only 320 Watt – a saving of almost 90%! Arwin, the lighting
halogen technologies to LED made the magic possible.
The switch wasn’t without its challenge. “The Megaman LED perform
at its red part. I had to change the artwork on the wall, as well as the
commented. “I deliberately chose the green apple, which is perfectly
resultant savings was so significant.”
38. atts for its lighting. By changing some of its applications to LED, it
g designer and also owner of the house said that the change from
med much better at the green and blue parts of the spectrum, but not
color of the sofa to ensure that the colors remain vibrant,” Arwin
lit up by the LED. What made me extremely happy was that the
