Conjunctions
- Look at these sentences
I like cooking.
I like eating.
I do not like washing dishes.
- They are small simple sentences, now we shall use linking words
to join the sentences.
- They are called conjunctions.
Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases and clauses.

Coordinating conjunctions
- Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two parts of a sentence that are
of equal rank.
- Coordinating conjunctions joins nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives ,
adverbs, phrases and clauses.
- The two parts may be words , phrases or clauses
- Examples of coordinating conjunctions:
- For, and , but, nor, or, so, yet
- Jack and Jill went up the hill.
- I am wearing a thick jacket yet I am cold.

Subordinate conjunctions
- Subordinate conjunctions join independent and dependent clauses.
I went swimming. – Independent clause ( simple sentence)
It was cold – dependent clause ( not a complete idea, what was
cold?)
Now join the sentences using a subordinating conjunction.
I went swimming although it was cold.

- A subordinate conjunction comes at the beginning of the
subordinate clause.

Correlation conjunctions
- Correlative conjunctions come in pairs to join different parts of a
sentence.
- The word “correlate” means they work together (co) and relate to
each other.
- Correlate conjunctions include pairs like “either / or”, “neither / nor”,
“not / only”, “but / also”.
She wants either the vanilla cake or the chocolate cake.
He with have neither the vanilla cake nor the chocolate cake.

When using correlation conjunctions, the verbs must agree so that the
sentences make sense.

and essays.
- It helps to create a smooth flow in the writing.
- Transition words occur (come) at the beginning or start of the
sentences to help move the story forward.
- Transitions link major parts of the story, paragraph or essay.
- They help sequence ( put in an order) information.
