Conjunctions
- Look at these sentences
I like cooking.
I like eating.
I do not like washing dishes.
- They are small simple sentences, now we shall use linking words
to join the sentences.
- They are called conjunctions.
Conjunctions are words that link other words, phrases and clauses.
Grade VI - English
Conjunctions
- Now using conjunctions like “and” , “but” in these sentences to join
them together.
I like cooking and eating but I do not like washing dishes.
- Conjunctions help in forming complex sentences.
- Examples: Reena is beautiful. Reena is cruel.

- Work hard.
- You will fail.
- Work hard else you will fail.
- Examples of conjunctions:
And , but , else , although , because , for , or , since , unless
- A conjunction is a part of speech.
- I went swimming.
- It was cold.
- I went swimming although it was cold.

- Joins two phrases.
Down the corridor and up the stairs.

Coordinating conjunctions
- Coordinating conjunctions are used to join two parts of a sentence that are
of equal rank.
- Coordinating conjunctions joins nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives ,
adverbs, phrases and clauses.
- The two parts may be words , phrases or clauses
- Examples of coordinating conjunctions:
- For, and , but, nor, or, so, yet
- Jack and Jill went up the hill.
- I am wearing a thick jacket yet I am cold.

Subordinate conjunctions
- Subordinate conjunctions join independent and dependent clauses.
I went swimming. – Independent clause ( simple sentence)
It was cold – dependent clause ( not a complete idea, what was
cold?)
Now join the sentences using a subordinating conjunction.
I went swimming although it was cold.

Subordinate conjunctions
- Examples: Because , since , as , although , though , while
- Mohan did not go to office as he was ill.
- A subordinate conjunction comes at the beginning of the
subordinate clause.
- Ram went out although it was raining.
- Independent clause subordinate clause

Correlation conjunctions
- Correlative conjunctions come in pairs to join different parts of a
sentence.
- The word “correlate” means they work together (co) and relate to
each other.
- Correlate conjunctions include pairs like “either / or”, “neither / nor”,
“not / only”, “but / also”.
She wants either the vanilla cake or the chocolate cake.
He with have neither the vanilla cake nor the chocolate cake.

- Some more examples:
- He not only studies hard but also works well.
- She is both intelligent and beautiful.
When using correlation conjunctions, the verbs must agree so that the
sentences make sense.
- Every night, either loud music or fighting neighbours wake Rajiv from
his sleep every night.

Transitions
- Transition words or phrases are used to help organise paragraphs
and essays.
- It helps to create a smooth flow in the writing.
- Transition words occur (come) at the beginning or start of the
sentences to help move the story forward.
- Transitions link major parts of the story, paragraph or essay.
- They help sequence ( put in an order) information.

Beginning - In the beginning, first of all , to begin with,
in the first place
Middle – Secondly, next, later, besides , in fact , moreover
Conclusion( end) – Finally, lastly, to sum it up, at last, as a result,
in the end , therefore, in conclusion

Transitional words
- Transitional words that act as an example:
- I love cake especially chocolate cake.
- The child was indeed very tired.
- Examples: indeed, in other words, by all means , for this reason,
particularly, significantly
- Transitional words for location:
Examples: besides, behind, next to , under, in front, amongst, opposite,
above, below
Next to the garage, they found a parking spot.
- You are living under the same roof.

Transition sentences
First, we will go fishing. Then, we will get ready for dinner.
Mary arrived after Leena left.
Since I see you, I am better.
While I am lazy, my sister is really hardworking.
Whenever my aunt visits us, she brings us some good gifts.
She is the best student in school. However, she does not finish her
homework on time.

Using transitions in a paragraph
Paragraph without transition:
Gita and I headed to the water slide in the amusement park. We reached it.
We climbed four flights of stairs to the top. Gita said she would go first. She
shot down the slide. It was my turn. I took a deep breath. The lifeguard gave
me a nudge. Away I went.

Using transitions in a paragraph
Paragraph with transitions:
At first , Gita and I headed to the water slide in the amusement park.
