Editor's Notes
Group Discussions are primarily a test of your interpersonal skills. We may be very good at our communicative ability, both verbally and in the written format, but how effective are these skills when it is put to the test at a group level is what a GD helps in achieving.
Main objective is filtration. A GD is a simulated environment that can be used to extrapolate how we would interact with people at a work place. It tests our ability to communicate, convince, agree, disagree and tests our tolerance along with our levels of maturity.
Micro level areas of assessment….
Self explantory
Verbal ability – command over spoken English – The assessment is to find out if the candidate is able to express his/her points of view in a structured manner, is there a logic to what is being said, how is the flow of thought and what is the overall content that he/she contributes using his/her communicative ability.
Knowledge – You may not be an expert at the topic that is being discussed, however the assessment aims to find out how much you are aware about the issue being discussed, do you have a point of view, is it original and unique and how do you with your knowledge, participate in the group discussion. Your contribution in terms of statistical facts and other relevant details will add value to your overall knowledge about the topic.
Convincing ability – While appreciating other’s views can you convince them or do you get convinced easily is what this area of assessment does. If you are able to convince others in the group, it shows your leadership qualities wherein convincing plays a vital role. Having said that, it is also most important to bear in mind that convincing ability is not attained by bullying others in the team. It is done through discussion and by virtue of the knowledge that is possessed by the candidate.
Maturity – In every group discussion, there will be members who are opposed to what you say, there will be many points of view that do not necessarily align with your point of view. How do you engage in a discussion given this behavior and a flurry of opinions, is what is being assessed in a GD.
Body Language – This is a critical aspect of the group discussion, research has established positive links and though body language greater insight is gained w.r.t. communication with other individuals. What we say may be is sharp contrast with what we actually subscribe to in our thoughts and opinions. Our Body has its own language that is a giveaway and attests to our communicative gaps w.r.t. what we say and what signal our body displays.
Sitting posture – sit straight, feet planted firmly in the floor with your hands [open palm] placed naturally on your lap – if you have a chair with an arm rest – use it….the way of hold your self is a sign of confidence. Do not shift feet, shake legs or keel on one side of your foot – all are signs of nervousness. While sitting do not clutch the chair – indicates nervousness.
If you want to show interest – you may lean forward towards the speaker and make eye contact while talking.
Cross legged and arms – this is a sign of building a barrier – it is a position that many candidates will be seated in which displays that they are not comfortable with what is happening around them, they are either not happy with the GD as such or are opposed to what others are saying. This is a very negative body language and must be avoided at all times.
Finger – indicative of a stick – it can get replaced by a pen or a palm down hand – all these are signs of superiority and are negative body language. Pointing a finger while talking is accusatory and must never be displayed in the GD.
Palm – open palm up is a sign of honesty – open palm down is again a mark of superiority. In a GD it is advised to use the open palm up position.
Eye contact – making eye contact displays confidence, while making eye contact – please look at the other persons eyes for at least a second – it helps to connect with the person and relate to him much better and thus establishes rapport.
Hand on neck – “what a pain you are /this is” never display this body language position
Hand on head – “someone help me, save me – I’ve lost everything – oh my God!” is what this sign is – never display this body language while in a GD.
