How To Make Ice Cream
Essential/Unit/Content Questions
Essential: How can we incorporate science into
our everyday lives?

Unit: Are there different forms of matter? How
can we measure them?

Content: What are the different forms of matter?
What are some of the different measurements of
matter?
Summary of the Unit
In this unit students have learned how to make ice
cream. Within that students have also learned the
various states of matter, how to identify when each
state is occurring and they can now measure solids
and liquids.
Role of the Teacher
The primary role of the teacher is to act as a
facilitator. I will not be telling them exactly what to
do; instead, I will give them the instructions and
observe how they work in their groups. I will be
observing the students in the categories of research,
questioning, following directions, cooperation, and
observations.
Role of the Parent
At the end of this project, the class will have an ice
cream party. We would appreciate any help from the
parents for this celebration.
Role of the Student
The role of the student is to be an active member of
the group as well as complete their own work. To be
a member of the group, they need to work together,
help make the ice cream, and help clean up. To
complete the activity, there will be logs and quizzes
that each student does on their own.
Benefits of Project-Based Learning
● Students become more engaged in learning when they can engage in
complex & challenging problems that closely resemble real life
● Well designed projects encourage active inquiry & higher level thinking
● Students abilities to acquire new understanding are enhanced when they
are 'connected to meaningful problem-solving activities & when students
are helped to understand why and how these facts and skills are relevant'

● Increased attendance, growth in self-reliance & improved attitudes
  towards learning
● Opportunities to develop complex skills such as higher-order thinking,
  problem-solving, collaborating, and communicating
● Access to a broader range of learning opportunities in the classroom,
providing a strategy for engaging culturally diverse learners
Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX)
Standards

● AL-ALEX-2008. SC. 2.1. Identifying states of
matter as solids, liquids, or gases
● AL-ALEX-2008. SC. 2.1.3 Measuring quantities of
  solids and liquids
Objectives
Throughout the duration of this project, students will:

● Expand their awareness of the properties and states of matter
● Be able to see the physical changes that occur while making ice
  cream
● Recognize the basic concepts about the structure and observable
  properties of matter
● Select appropriate materials and develop skills to accurately
measure and carry out the required skills necessary to make the ice
  cream
● Research, analyze, reflect, and report information they collected
during their experience with the project
● Understand how measurements and the states of matter are
important and useful in everyday activities, such as eating ice
  cream
Project-Based Learning
In Project Based Learning (PBL), students go through an extended process of
inquiry in response to a complex question, problem, or challenge. While
allowing for some degree of student "voice and choice," rigorous projects are
carefully planned, managed, and assessed to help students learn key academic
content, practice 21st Century Skills (such as collaboration, communication &
critical thinking), and create high-quality, authentic products & presentations.

Effective Project Based Learning:
     ○ Is intended to teach significant content
     ○ Requires critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration, and various
         forms of communication
     ○ Requires inquiry as part of the process of learning and creating
         something new
