This document describes an interactive art installation called the Global Mandala Project. It consists of interactive video walls in capital cities around the world that display a continuously changing "giving mandala". The mandala is composed of pictures uploaded by the public to commemorate their donations to various charities. It aims to honor victims of war and violence while bringing people together through art, technology, and philanthropy across religions and cultures. The first installation is planned for December 2012 at Ground Zero in New York City.

The
Giving
Mandala
Video
Walls
are
living
works
of
art,
constantly
changing
and
evolving
as
new
additions
are
incorporated
into
the
“enlightenment
mandala”.
The
Global
Mandala
Project
incorporates
art,
politics,
commerce,
community,
technology,
sociology,
philosophy,
theology,
spirituality
and
most
importantly
humanity.

Buddhist
tradition
teaches
us
that
mandala’s
are
infused
by
their
creators
with
an
energetic
imprint
intended
to
be
reflected
upon
the
consciousness
of
the
viewer.
The
Global
Mandala
Project
borrows
from
this
teaching
with
the
creation
of
the
“enlightenment
mandala”.
The
Christian
faith
teaches
us
“in
giving
we
receive.”
There
is
a
profound
shift
in
ones
consciousness
from
the
simple
but
profound
act
of
giving
on
behalf
of
another.
This
idea
of
service
is
reaffirmed
by
the
core
values
of
Hinduism.
The
Nation
of
Islam
and
the
followers
of
the
teachings
of
Abraham
(Jews)
both
espouse
philanthropy
as
core
values
of
their
respective
faiths.
Mandala
Means
Sacred
Space:
The
giving
mandala
exists
in
virtual
space.
It
is
comprised
of
light.
There
are
6.5
billion
pixels
in
the
giving
mandala,
one
for
each
person
on
earth.
When
you
make
a
donation
through
the
Global
Mandala
Project
to
the
NGO/NPO
of
your
choice
you
may
upload
a
picture
to
the
giving
mandala
to
commemorate
your
contribution.
A
percentage
of
each
dollar
raised
is
added
to
the
Global
Mandala
Foundation
fund
of
fund
of
funds
for
the
creation
of
an
asset
backed
social
investing
bank.
Eligibility
to
participate
in
the
social
investing
bank
requires
a
minimum
tax
deductible
donation
of
$111
to
the
participating
charity
of
your
choice.
The
giving
mandala
will
consist
of
the
flags
of
the
world,
each
flag
consisting
of
a
corresponding
number
of
pixels
to
their
respective
countries
populations.
Contributions
to
the
Global
Mandala
Foundation
will
reflect
the
geophysical
location
of
their
donors.

of

uploaded
by
viewers
thereby
making
all
those
who
choose
to
donate
collaborators
in
this
public
community
art
project.

installation

It
is
estimated
that
the
budget
for
the
ground
zero
memorial
installation
will
cost
$500,000
for
the
technology
infrastructure
resources
alone.
It
is
expected
by
the
implementation
team
that
many
of
the
costs
associated
with
each
installations
construction
will
be
aggregated
through
the
Global
Mandala
micro-­‐giving
platform
with
assistance
from
the
NEA
and
other
government,
private
sector
foundations
and
corporate
sponsors
in
addition
to
contributions
from
the
general
public.
