2018: Effects of Plastic Pollution on Land and WaterJoshua Amponsem
Plastic pollution is threatening life on land and life under water. The presentation shows the effects of plastics on life on land and life under water. Additionally, it shows simple steps on how to avoid Single-use plastics.
Plastic bottles have several disadvantages, including that they take an extremely long time (500 years) to decompose in landfills. Additionally, plastic is difficult to recycle effectively as most plastic cannot be recycled and recycled plastic is often downcycled into lower quality products. A further disadvantage is that plastic production relies on non-renewable resources like oil and natural gas. Large quantities of discarded plastic end up polluting the environment and harming wildlife through ingestion and entanglement.
This document outlines a business plan for a plastics recycling business. It will require an initial investment of up to 8 million rupees excluding land costs, and will need at least 1 acre of land. The business will sort, wash, shred, and extrude plastic waste into new plastic rolls. It expects to process 2.5 tons of plastic per day, generating revenue of 5-6 lacs per month with profits increasing from 13% in the first year to over 20% annually going forward. Marketing will utilize traditional and digital methods. A tip suggests considering leasing rather than purchasing expensive equipment.
Indian Plastic industry is making significant contribution to the economic development and growth of various key sectors in the country such as: Automotive, Construction, Electronics, Healthcare, Textiles, FMCG , etc. It 2 has grown at 10% CAGR over the last five years to reach 13.4 MTPA in FY15. Current low penetration level and hence, low per capita consumption (~9.7 Kg) along with increased growth in end use industries could propel the growth of plastics further. Plastic industry is estimated to grow at ~10% in the near future reaching 21.6 MTPA by FY20.
This document provides a business plan for Hind Plastics, a plastic recycling business. Key points include:
- Hind Plastics will collect plastic waste, recycle it into plastic flakes, and manufacture household plastic goods and sell recycled plastic to packaging companies.

- The key markets are in the cities of Allahabad and surrounding areas, targeting both households and small packaging companies.
- Hind Plastics aims to be competitive on price and expand its service area over the next five years. Product quality, reliable supply, and low costs are seen as keys to success.
Bio-plastics are plastics that are either derived from renewable biomass sources like vegetable oils or are biodegradable. There are several types of bio-plastics including starch-based, cellulose-based, and aliphatic polyesters like PLA and PHA which are produced by bacteria. Compared to conventional plastics, bio-plastics have benefits like lower carbon emissions, lower toxicity, and some can biodegrade, but they also have drawbacks like higher costs and potential issues with GMOs. Bio-plastics production is growing due to advantages for certain applications and their more environmentally friendly nature.
This document outlines a business plan for a plastics recycling company. It would require an initial investment of 1.5 million taka. The process involves sorting plastics by type, washing them, shredding them into pellets, testing and classifying the pellets, and finally extruding the pellets into new plastic rolls or sheets. The company expects to make a 13% profit in year one and over 20% annually starting in year two. Advantages include using available raw materials, reducing waste and pollution, and conserving energy and resources through recycling plastics.

This document discusses bioplastics as an alternative to traditional petroleum-based plastics. Bioplastics are derived from renewable plant sources like corn starch and can be broken down naturally. They reduce carbon dioxide emissions and are biodegradable unlike most plastics. The document outlines several uses of bioplastics in automotive parts, electronics casings, and packaging/catering products. Companies like Toyota and Sony are adopting bioplastics to make their products more environmentally friendly.
This document discusses green and sustainable products. It defines green products as those that cause minimal harm to people and the environment during manufacturing and use. It then discusses factors like fair working conditions, soil pollution, and use of renewable energy sources in production. It focuses on compostable plastics, which are made from renewable materials like corn starch and can break down, unlike traditional petroleum-based plastics. The advantages of compostable plastics and bioplastics are reducing reliance on petroleum and landfills. The document also notes recycling challenges with plastic and research efforts to improve plastic recycling rates.
Bioplastics are plastics derived from renewable biomass sources such as vegetable fats and oils. They are biodegradable and break down through microbial action. Bioplastics production results in lower carbon dioxide emissions than traditional plastics. Common types include polylactic acid (PLA) and poly-3-hydroxybutyrate (PHB). Bioplastics are used in packaging, catering products, automobile interiors, and gardening due to their biodegradability and environmental benefits compared to petroleum-based plastics. However, they still present challenges like not readily decomposing in all conditions and competing with food crop land.
The document summarizes plastic pollution statistics and provides suggestions for reducing plastic usage. It notes that plastic production has doubled since 1950 to over 335 million tons annually in 2016 and is projected to double again by 2034. Most plastics can take hundreds or thousands of years to degrade. Suggestions include using reusable bags, bottles, utensils, avoiding single-use plastics, choosing refillable containers, and purchasing second-hand toys to reduce plastic waste. While plastics have benefits, individuals adopting changes like these can help curb the growing plastic pollution problem.
This document discusses plastic pollution and its alternatives. It provides background on the invention and rise of plastics, noting that over 100 million tons are produced annually. Plastic pollution threatens the environment by killing plant and animal life as plastics do not biodegrade. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch demonstrates this issue, covering hundreds of thousands of square kilometers. Several alternatives to plastic are proposed, including glass, PHB biocomposites, liquid wood, biodegradable plastics, and corn-based plastics. While not perfect solutions, these alternatives aim to reduce plastic waste and pollution.

Plastic production has significantly increased over the last century and half of plastic produced is used only once and thrown away. Virtually all plastic ever made still exists today in some form. Plastic waste accounts for 10% of all trash and plastic production uses 8% of the world's oil. Small pieces of plastic pollution from degraded products can be found on beaches worldwide. Some compounds in plastics have potential human health effects by disrupting hormones. Reducing single-use plastics through reuse of bags, bottles and utensils as well as buying fewer packaged products can help reduce plastic waste.
While bio-based plastics offer potential sustainability benefits, there are still many open questions about their environmental impacts and economic viability. Bio-based plastics are made from renewable resources like plants but are not necessarily biodegradable. There are concerns about the impacts of growing feedstocks on land and water use as well as energy inputs. Many consumers and policymakers incorrectly assume bio-based plastics are compostable or will solve marine debris issues. Life cycle assessments are needed to fully understand the environmental tradeoffs between bio-based and fossil-based plastics. Standards and guidelines continue to be developed to address challenges in the marketplace.

Bioplastic Carry Bags and Garbage Bags Production. Biodegradable, Compostable and Eco-Friendly Carry Bags and Trash Bags Manufacturing Business
Polyethylene is one of the most common forms of plastics used in protective packaging materials. As biodegradable bags are introduced onto the market, polyethylene can soon be completely replaced. Biodegradable bags are typically made out of cornstarch and other natural materials.
The use of biodegradable plastic could come in easily for the use of carrying goods rather than as a primary package. A wider use of such bio degradable materials will make them commercially viable.
Compostable plastic bags dominate the market for biodegradable plastics in Europe. They not only carry goods and biowaste but also the hopes of the bioplastics industry for huge markets in years to come.

Plastics are synthetic polymers that are durable, lightweight and inexpensive materials. However, they persist in the environment for centuries and have caused widespread pollution. Only a small percentage of plastics are recycled each year, with the rest accumulating in landfills and oceans. This poses threats to wildlife through entanglement and ingestion of plastic debris. Reducing plastic use and improving waste management strategies are needed to curb further environmental damage.

2. Introduction
www.entrepreneurindia.co
The non-biodegradable plastic products, which are commonly used in households, cannot be recycled
for 400 years. Products like plastic carry bags, if disposed unscientifically, are hard to decompose and
are a massive threat to soil cultivation.
Biodegradable substances are those that degrades or break down naturally. Materials like plants,
animals, their waste, paper, fruits, flowers, vegetables fall under biodegradable substances, on the
other hand, rubber, plastic, chemicals, paint plastic falls under the category of the non-biodegradable
items.
4. Bio-Degradable Plates from Areca Nuts Tree Leaf
Disposable party plates made from Areca leaf are an eco-friendly alternative to conventional
disposable plates. These biodegradable areca leaf plates are a natural and renewable resource. Areca
Leaf that are naturally discarded from the areca tree are collected from the forest floor and no trees
are cut. Areca leaf plates are made from the naturally shed leaf sheaths of Areca Nut Tree. The areca
leaves are simply collected, pressure washed, scrubbed, sun dried and then with the application of
heat and pressure formed into appropriate shaped plates.
The global market for foodservice disposables is anticipated to see a steady growth between 2017 and
2021. By the end of 2021, the global foodservice disposables market is estimated to bring in US$
27,187 Million revenue. Increasing number of restaurants are using disposable plates, cups, trays,
bowls, etc. to serve various food items. Majority of the restaurants have started providing catering
services, hence the use of foodservice disposables have also increased. Manufacturers are also
providing customized foodservice disposables as per the requirement of restaurants.
www.entrepreneurindia.co
5. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Moreover, increasing number of customers have started using catering services provided by
restaurants, especially during celebrations. Meanwhile, in the recent years, retail stores and
hospitality industry have also started using foodservice disposables to provide various food products.
Compostable disposables are a viable alternative that provides the convenience of disposable plates
when used in catering for parties, picnics or other occasions along with an added advantage of no
negative impact to the eco-system. However, the lack of awareness about the benefits of compostable
tableware’s and the poor management of organic waste hampers the growth of compostable tableware
market. Moreover, the rising enforcement of environmental laws and the growing need for better waste
management is anticipated to create an opportunity for the growth of compostable tableware market.
7. Bio plastic Carry Bags and Garbage Bags
The process of extrusion then transformed these plastic beads into plastic bags. Trash bags are made
from low-density polyethylene (LDPE), which is purported to be flexible, soft, airtight and waterproof.
At times, to provide strength to the bags, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is also used.
The biodegradable plastic packaging market was valued at USD 3.97 billion in 2018, and is expected
to reach a market value of USD 10.3 billion by 2024, registering a CAGR of 17.04%. The stringent
regulations by various governments and federal agencies with an objective to reduce plastic waste and
promote biodegradable plastics usage in packaging are boosting the demand of this market. The
regulations related to green packaging is increasing. Various companies are required to adopt
biodegradable packaging to comply with the standards, which in turn, is propelling the growth of this
market. High costs (compared to normal plastic) are restraining the growth of the market, as
biodegradable plastic is made from plants' starch and its decomposition needs specific conditions, like
temperature, bacteria, humidity, etc.
www.entrepreneurindia.co
8. www.entrepreneurindia.co
The increasing environmental concerns regarding plastic usage (as plastics contain toxic pollutants
that harm plants, animals, and people) are driving the use of biodegradable plastic alternatives.
Floating plastic waste that survives thousands of years in water can serve as a transportation device
for invasive species that disrupt habitats. This aforementioned factor is contributing to the growth of
the market. Eco-friendly initiatives by corporates and abundant availability of raw materials for
manufacturing bio plastics are prominent factors driving growth in Asia Pacific bio plastics market.

resources. PLA had the second highest consumption volume of any bio plastic of the world, Although
Bio plastic is a biodegradable material that come from renewable sources and can be used to reduce
the problem of plastic waste that is suffocating the planet and polluting the environment. These are
100% degradable, equally resistant and versatile, already used in agriculture, textile industry,
medicine and, over all, in the container and packaging market, and biopolymers are already becoming
popular in cities throughout Europe and the United States. With increasing concerns over the use of
plastics, sustainable alternatives to plastics are increasingly in demand. Biopolymers in general and
bio plastics in particular, present one such sustainable alternative.
www.entrepreneurindia.co
14. www.entrepreneurindia.co
The global biodegradable plastics market is expected to reach 16.8 billion by 2022 with CAGR 8.4% to
2016-2022. Rising consumer awareness about global warming and government legislation such as
banned on plastic bags will increase the demand for biodegradable plastics across the globe. Plastics
that decompose to carbon dioxide and water under the actions of microorganisms is known as
biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics are produced by fermentation of sugar or canola oil to
produce polylactic acid (PLA) or polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA) which in turn converted into
biodegradable plastics. A sustainable alternative to traditional plastics, bio plastics are plastics that
are fully or partially bio based, and biodegradable or compostable. In other words, they are plastics
that are made from renewable resources such as corn, tapioca, potatoes, sugar and algae and breaks
down faster than traditional plastics, which are typically made from petroleum, and other fossil
resources such as natural gas. Bio plastics have numerous applications like packaging, bottles,
utensils, furniture etc.
16. Paper Cups
A paper cup is a disposable made out of paper and after lined with plastic or wax prevent liquid from
leakage out or soaking by paper. Paper cups are made from renewable resources. The cups should be
made from food grade paper which is hygienic in nature.
Paper-based cups are usually lined with a membrane of polyethylene (plastic) to make them
waterproof, but it means they are not recyclable alongside paper or cardboard, or biodegradable. As
for the cups that are labelled biodegradable, Tim Silver wood says, Biodegradable cups don't compost
in normal compost. Global disposable cups market is expected to flourish at a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 6.1% over the forecast period 2017-2024. Global disposable cups market stood

PET is a polyester polymer made by reacting ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. Pellets of the PET
polymer (or resin) are heated to a molten mass, which can easily be molded into almost any shape.
Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. Bottles made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET
sometimes PETE) can be used to make lower grade products, such as carpets. To make a food grade
plastic, the bottles need to be hydrolyzed down to monomers, which are purified and then re-
polymerized to make new PET. PET which stands for polyethylene terephthalate, is a form of polyester
(just like the clothing fabric). It is extruded or molded into plastic bottles and containers for packaging
foods and beverages, personal care products, and many other consumer products
A PET preform is a test tube shaped piece of plastic that is made by a process called injection
mounding, using a plastic called PET. Meanwhile a world is a shaped hollow piece of metal, a tool that
is used to control the shape of the item being molded.
www.entrepreneurindia.co
26. www.entrepreneurindia.co
Preform is to form or shape a product to a preliminary shape and size. In easy words for PET Preforms
the PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate) material is formed to a shape which is like molded to a specific
shape which is then afterwards blown to a bottle in the blowing machine.
PET Preforms market size will grow from USD 18.5 Billion in 2017 to USD 25.95 Billion by 2023, at
an estimated CAGR of 5.8%. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) refers to a thermoplastic polymer resin

28. Polyester Fiber from Corn/Starch
PLA (Polylactic acid) comes from fermented plant starch (mostly from corn), and is often referred to as
corn starch plastic. It is becoming popular very quickly, because corn-based plastic is a more
environmentally-friendly alternative to traditional plastics, which are petroleum-based. Polyester
fibers are manufactured from recycled or virgin PET. These fibers can be colored by the method of
pigmentation or dope dyeing. Polyester fibers can be classified as staple fibers and bulk continuous
fibers (BCF) depending on their length. These fibers can also be manufactured in various geometries
such as square, rectangular, triangular, hexagonal and circular depending upon the area of
application. Polyester is the most used and most preferred fiber in the textiles industry due to its
better physical properties, lower price, versatility, and recyclability, which offer a completely unique
set of benefits unmatched by any other natural or synthetic fibers. Polyester fibers are extremely
strong, resistant to most chemicals and shrinking, stretching, abrasion, wrinkle and mildew resistant.
Polyester fibers are hydrophobic in nature and dry quickly. Therefore, they can be used to provide
insulation in the form of hollow fibers. Polyester fibers withstand wear and tear longer than cotton
and retain their shapes in extreme climatic conditions
www.entrepreneurindia.co
29. www.entrepreneurindia.co
and are thus preferred for manufacturing outdoor clothing. The soluble corn fiber market can be
segmented on the basis of its application as food & beverages, nutraceuticals and clinical nutrition,
animal nutrition and others. It can also be classified on the basis of end-user usage pattern of soluble
corn fiber into breakfast, lunch, dinner and on-the-go eating. One of the major advantages of soluble
corn fiber is, it can be used as low-calorie fillings in a range of food items, specially baked goods and
confectionery. In addition, there is a growing demand for soluble corn fibers in frozen entrees such as

38. Biodegradable Disposable Plastic Cutlery
Biodegradable plastics are plastics that can be decomposed by the action of living organisms, usually
microbes, into water, carbon dioxide, and biomass. Biodegradable plastics are commonly produced
with renewable raw materials, micro-organisms, petrochemicals, or combinations of all three.
Plastic cutlery is made from a type of plastic known as polystyrene1. Polystyrene or expanded
polystyrene is more commonly referred to as Styrofoam. India is slowly becoming a country where
people are turning health conscious. Thankfully, biodegradable cutlery has emerged as a better
alternative to plastics across the globe and Indians have been early adopters of biodegradable
products. The biodegradable plastic packaging market was valued at USD 3.97 billion in 2018, and is
expected to reach a market value of USD 10.3 billion by 2024, registering a CAGR of 17.04% during
the forecast period of 2019 - 2024. Increasing awareness regarding harmful effects associated with
non-biodegradable plastic wastes is a key factor likely to drive the market.

This aforementioned factor is contributing to the growth of
the market.

41. Printed Paper Shopping Bags
There are bigger reasons why the use of paper bag is advantageous. Aside from being reusable, they
are recyclable, biodegradable, environment friendly, inexpensive and practical to use. Paper bags are
made from wood. Like newspapers, magazines or books, they can be recycled and produced into a
new paper.
Paper bags are an essential product in modern life. Paper bags are a multi-purpose and cost-effective
method to preserve, shield, and carry various types of goods. Paper bags are recyclable, eco-friendly,
convenient, customizable, and available in various sizes. The global paper bags market is expected to
grow rapidly in the future, owing to the stringent regulations regarding plastic bags that are
negatively affecting the environment across the globe. Moreover, the rising population in developing
countries like China, India, and Brazil has propelled the demand for shopping, which, in turn, has
increased the use of paper bags. The increasing demand for cosmetics and personal care products is
also expected to drive the paper bags market for these applications. However, the fluctuating product
prices may hamper the paper bags market globally in the years ahead.

Conversely, the increasing innovation in product design is estimated to create new opportunities for
market growth in the future. The global Printed Paper Shopping Bags market was valued at USD 4.7
billion in 2018 and is expected to reach USD 6.35 billion by 2025, at a CAGR of 4.4% between 2019
and 2025.
