Homer was an important ancient Greek poet born around 800 BC in Ionia who is most famous for writing the epic poems The Iliad and The Odyssey. He lived in Ionia in western Asia Minor until around 750 BC. Though the details of his life are unclear, he is credited with orally composing the two seminal works of Western literature that have had profound influence on ancient and modern cultures.
