This document summarizes a presentation comparing PostgreSQL and MySQL databases. It outlines the strengths and weaknesses of each, including PostgreSQL's strong advanced features and security capabilities versus its lack of integrated replication. MySQL's strengths are its integrated replication and performance, while its weaknesses include immature security and an "closed" open source community. A variety of application types are described as better fits for each database. The document concludes with information about EnterpriseDB, a company that provides commercial support for PostgreSQL.
Scaling SQL and NoSQL Databases in the Cloud RightScale
Database performance is the number-one cause of poor performance for scalable web applications, and the problem is magnified in cloud environments where I/O and bandwidth are generally slower and less predictable than in dedicated data centers. Database sharding is a highly effective method of removing the database scalability barrier by operating on top of proven RDBMS products such as MySQL and Postgres as well as the new NoSQL database platforms. In this session, you'll learn what it really takes to implement sharding, the role it plays in the effective end-to-end lifecycle management of your entire database environment, why it is crucial for ensuring reliability, and how to choose the best technology for a specific application. We'll also share a case study on a high-volume social networking application that demonstrates the effectiveness of database sharding for scaling cloud-based applications.

Relational databases vs Non-relational databasesJames Serra
There is a lot of confusion about the place and purpose of the many recent non-relational database solutions ("NoSQL databases") compared to the relational database solutions that have been around for so many years. In this presentation I will first clarify what exactly these database solutions are, compare them, and discuss the best use cases for each. I'll discuss topics involving OLTP, scaling, data warehousing, polyglot persistence, and the CAP theorem. We will even touch on a new type of database solution called NewSQL. If you are building a new solution it is important to understand all your options so you take the right path to success.

Enterprise Data Services for Strategic SOAsumedha.r
As enterprises move into developing SOAs for their internal infrastructure, data services have become a critical component of that architecture. Essentially data services allows one to take relational and other data and make them available as services. This not only enables easy integration of data into business processes but also for mashups and any service in general. Exposing enterprise data as Web services is however not a simple task. These services need to be well secured, highly reliable, and highly scalable with the ability to handle failures transparently. One of the challenges is to make data services consumable by many applications and hence having many integration options as well. At the same time the data that need be exposed could be in the form of relational data, CSV files, Excel spreadsheet files and so on.
For the enterprise another important factor for data service solutions is that it needs to be very database developer friendly. Database architects, developers and administrators who know best how to handle enterprise data and work very closely with that data, need to be geared with an easy mechanism to expose the data as services. This ensured highly flexible integration for enterprise wide SOA. In this talk Sumedha Rubasinghe will discuss the challenges and also introduce WSO2 Data Services which can be used to meet these challenges and help bring various data sources into the center of your enterprise SOA strategy.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software FuzzingAftab Hussain
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.

• PostgreSQL Strengths
• PostgreSQL Weaknesses
• MySQL Strengths
• MySQL Weaknesses
• Application Types
• About EnterpriseDB
16. PostgreSQL Weaknesses
• Lack of an integrated replication solution
– External solutions are required
– There is no agreed solution in the
PostgreSQL community for the
majority of replication
requirements
– The current external solutions
have a high learning curve
17. PostgreSQL Weaknesses (cont.)
• No upgrade facility for major releases
– The data must be either exported or replicated to the
new version
• At least twice of the storage is needed during the upgrade process
• On large datasets, an upgrade is a very time consuming process
18. PostgreSQL Weaknesses (cont.)
• Performance issues
– Indexes can not be
used to directly return
the results of a query
– Query execution plans
are not cached
– Some update and delete operations leave expired
data in the data files causing more IO
– Bulk loading operations may become CPU bound
19. PostgreSQL Weaknesses (cont.)
• Lack of experienced production talent
– Many of the experienced
PostgreSQL administrators do not
have experience in large
corporate environments
20. PostgreSQL Weaknesses (cont.)
• Sparse Independent Software Vendor support
– There are few management and monitoring tools
capable of using PostgreSQL
– When tools are available, many times it is through a
generic ODBC or JDBC data source
– PostreSQL is Rarely the primarily database for an
application, including open source applications
21. Agenda
