2. What is Smog?
Smog is a kind of air pollution, originally named
for the mixture of smoke and fog in the air.
Smog is composed of nitrogen oxides, sulphur
oxides, ozone, smoke or particulates among
others.
Human-made smog is derived from coal
emissions, vehicular emissions, industrial
emissions, forest and agricultural fires and
photochemical reactions of these emissions.
3. Introduction
The Grand/Great Smog of London, or Great Smog of
1952 sometimes called the Big Smoke was a severe air-
pollution event that affected the British capital of London
in December 1952.
It lasted from Friday, 5 December to Tuesday, 9
December 1952 and then dispersed quickly when the
weather changed.
It was so thick it brought road, air and rail transport to a
virtual standstill. This was certainly an event to
remember.
