2. ONLY THOSE WHO ATTEMPT
THE ABSURD WILL ACHIEVE
THE IMPOSSIBLE.
-M.C. ESCHER
My name is Madison Gross. I graduated with honors from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a BFA
in Graphic Design. I am a multidisciplinary designer specializing in packaging. My roots lie in making, and I draw
inspiration from craft and handmade details. I pour a little bit of me into each of my designs, giving every project a little
tender love and care. I am a quick learner and team player who thrives under pressure, chaos and tight deadlines and I
approach each day with a positive attitude. I also enjoy iced tea, hiking, and the smell of pine trees.
HELLO THERE.

GRAVEDIGGER MOONSHINE
This project developed the packaging design for Gravedigger
Moonshine. In 1972, federal agents discovered a massive moonshine
operation in Franklin County, VA.The moonshiners had successfully
evaded detection by disguising the still as a cemetery. A basement
was dug out and covered with a fake sod roof, which the moonshiners
covered with cinder blocks painted to look like headstones and fake roses
on the “graves”.The bottle was spray painted black and the illusion of
copper (usually the material used to build the stills) was created using
texture paste, modeling clay and spray paint. The box and wooden hang
tag labels were custom made.

The objective of this assignment was to develop a marketing campaign
for a nationally used app that hasn’t extensively advertised itself. My
team decided to work with Tinder. As the number one lifestyle app,
Tinder has thousands of users. Despite its strong numbers, many
don’t like to admit they have the app or use it, with many Tinder
profiles quipping,“We can tell your parents we met at the library.” The
purpose of this campaign is to encourage users to embrace the app
and do so proudly by comparing it to a similar guilty pleasure: sweets.
After all, everyone has a sweet tooth once in a while. The campaign
extends to Instagram, Pandora, and magazine advertisements and also
features club promoters equipped with branded condom lollipops.

These posters were designed as a social awareness campaign to inform
bystanders who witness instances of bullying what to do to solve
the problem. The posters encourage combating hate with love, both
toward the bully and the victim, as love is a powerful force capable of
healing and uniting people together.

The Ologies is a series of novelty books written for children, each
given a fabricated origin story. For example, Wizardology is written
by Merlin, and includes pop-ups, envelopes, potions, phoenix feathers
and wood grain samples. Each book uses similar elements to create a
fantastical world for the reader to explore, however the original covers
were dark and unappealing to the target demographic. The purpose of
this project was to refresh the book jacket designs to make them more
appealing to young kids without losing the magic and mystery of the
series.Iconic character silhouettes were used as the personality of each
book and the titles were gold foiled by hand.

This project was a Collaborative Learning Center Challenge issued by
SCAD and Highcon. Highcon challenged teams to engineer custom
die-lines for a new paper product or package that showcases the unique
abilities of their newest printer, the Highcon Euclid. In collaboration
with industrial design student Ken Macalino, we developed a concept
for LED light bulb packaging with a special inset that allows the
bulb to sit upright and protected within the box while leaving the
threading exposed. Because LED bulbs emit less heat, the user is able
to leave the bulb in the packaging and screw it into the socket, upon
which laser cut holes on each panel project constellations onto the
surrounding walls. This reduces waste and encourages conservation.

The objective of this project was to design an identity and menu system
for Herbs, a theoretical vegan eatery and kombucha bar located in
Texas. The restaurant offered classes in cooking and horticulture in
order to promote sustainable lifestyle and eating practices. The project
also included a cookbook with recipes featured in the menu and
lifestyle articles about gardening, life on the farm, and kombucha. All
illustrations were photographs altered in Photoshop, and the menu
clipboard was custom made to maintain brand identity.

Spirit is a concept for a pop-up metaphysical shop that toured around
the country to sell its goods at various music festivals. They sell incense,
essential oils, sage bundles and other various wares and handmade
clothing and accessories. In order to commemorate each festival but
remain cost conscious, a sticker label system was developed which
could be printed with each festival’s name and date while keeping
packaging consistent. These stickers also worked to reseal partially
used products until the consumer returned home from the festival
weekend. The packaging is made of recycled paper.

The objective of this project was to package bamboo knitting needles
in such a way as to appeal to a broader demographic. The secondary
objective was to utilize cross platform integration in order to convert
a product or supply into selling a project or a hobby. I solved this
problem by packaging the knitting needles in a way which showcased
a project that users could create. The QR code on the back of the
package leads to a tutorial to knit a wallet. The button which acts as
the drawer pull is used in the project, and the knit textile that lines the
interior of the box is an example of the stitch taught in the tutorial.
Creative patterning and typography is used to transform an old and
tired tool into something fun and appealing.

My grandfather is a writer and a poet, and spent a summer on the
island of Tiburón, Mexico over forty years ago. While he was there,
he wrote a series of poems and then retyped them on his vintage
typewriter upon returning home. He approached me and asked me
to help him compile the poetry into an anthology, complete with
illustrations and a dust jacket. I retyped the poetry and used InDesign
to design the layout of the book, which is a total of over 60 pages. I
also used Photoshop to create a series of digital illustrations utilized
throughout the book and featured on the dust jacket.
