Blends added to diesel fuel increase combustion efficiency and reduce the mass of fuel consumed due to their oxygenated properties. While volumetric efficiency decreases with blends due to higher temperatures heating the incoming air, friction losses are reduced, and heat release and exhaust gas temperatures increase with the higher oxygen content of the blends, resulting in better combustion overall.
