Graphics Worksheet
Introduction
A graphics package is another general purpose package, one that you use to draw
pictures (or graphics) on the monitor. Two graphics packages we have in the school are
Macromedia Fireworks and MS Paint.
Graphics are made up of tiny dots which are called pixels. The more pixels you use the
better quality or resolution your picture or graphic will be.
Task 1
Below are 8 features of a graphics package, write a short explanation on each one.
• draw graphic- move the pointer in directions to draw circles etc
• enter text- move the cursor on the screen & type the text
• common tools- contains shapes, eraser, etc
• alter tool attributes- allow you to edit properties of the tool
• scale graphic- allows you to change the size of a picture
• rotate graphic- change the direction of a graphic
• scan and edit graphic- using a scanner to scan the photo
• crop graphic- reducing the graphic by cutting parts off
Types of Graphics
Graphics packages can be classified into two main types: bit-mapped (or paint) and
vector (or draw). Both types of packages are used to make pictures, but they work
differently.
Task 2
Answer the following questions:
1. Explain how bit-mapped packages work? It changing the colour of the pixels
2. What are the main problems with using bit-mapped packages? If you were to
draw a circle on top of a square, it would be rubbed out
3. What is an advantage of using a bit-mapped package? It can be used for
changing colours
4. Explain how vector packages work? They are used for drawings
5. What are the main problems with using vector packages? it works differently from
bit-mapped packages
6. What is an advantage of using a vector package? You can use it for drawing stuff
7. Why do magazines use graphic packages? a photo/picture can be airbrushed to
not show certain parts
