Alan Partridge can add 'matchmaker' to his long list of celebrity achievements,
after two of his American fans visited Norwich last week as the ideal location to
announce their engagement. Because both Partridge and Radio Norwich
proved too elusive for this special occasion, Yale University students Lucas
Grubbs and Meredith Farmer had to plump for second best and visited the
studios of BBC Radio Norfolk. Presenter Graham Barnard substituted for the
absent Partridge and invited Lucas to ask for Meredith’s hand in marriage live
on his show, which she happily accepted. This emotional event took place on
America’s Thanksgiving Day, although this is not normally celebrated in
Norfolk. The happy couple first met working in the university post room where
Meredith was sorting letters, an environment that would make Partridge proud,
and they have set their wedding day for 6 August 2005. Graham Barnard
explained to the students that “Radio Norfolk was very different to Alan
Partridge’s Radio Norwich.” Surely not?
