Hiram Ulysses Grant was born in 1822 in Ohio to a tanner. He attended West Point where he disliked military life but became a general. During the Civil War, Grant helped the Union win important battles and became Commanding General. After the war, Grant was elected the 18th US President where he helped ratify the 15th Amendment and protect African American rights. Grant achieved successes in the military including key victories and helping end the Civil War and slavery, which aligned with his lack of belief in slavery and goal to end it.
